Just saw Croupier - really, really enjoyed it. I have a couple questions, though, and I will not use the Spoiler tag b/c I wrote Spoiler in the title, and b/c to some, nothing is more annoyinger.
So, I understand his father set his son up as the “honest” man inside the Casino, and used his girlfriend, Dr. Corday, to talk him into it, going so far as to have a “fake” black eye and wrist injury. What I don’t understand is how his plan could have possibly been a success - they were caught, right? How does the father benefit from the thieves getting caught? Plus, I gathered that he still had affection for his son - wouldn’t he be worried that his son might get caught too?
Another question - does Jack believe that his girlfriend was really killed b/c of her involvement with telling the police? I thought that at first, but then he grabs the wheel when he thinks the “white witch” is going to hit that pedestrian, which made me think he believes the police that it was a hit-and-run. Thoughts, anyone?
its been while since i saw this, but i’ll give it my best. I think the dad gambled his son would come out of whatever happened on top. (the father was the gambler, right?)
OK, so that could explain why he involved his son, but I’m still confused about the success of the father’s plan. Let me try and clarify with more detail:
The big surprise at the end is when you see Dr. Corday and the father together. When you see them at the end they both appear to have prospered from that casino robbery - wearing nice clothes and back in Sun City. (Earlier it shows the father working some bum job in a casino and his phone’s been disconnected) - but I didn’t understand how they could have prospered from the robbery. Since they had no way of knowing that Jack’s ex-cop girlfriend would tell the police, they couldn’t possibly have planned for the robbery to fail, but it did fail - so how did that change their fortunes?
What I got from it was that the father and the Dr. owed someone in South Africa money, and helped set the plan in motion to cancel to debt, and possibly get money from it. The success or failure of it really didn’t matter to them, they just needed to get someone inside to help with the plan.
I am confused too, so what follows are my guesses and personal take so corrections welcome.
I don’t think the girlfriend told the police. I think that all she did was erase the message to Jack which signalled that the con was about to happen. He was then caught unawares when it started and thus contributed somewhat to it’s failure.
How the scam was supposed to work and all is not clear.
I don’t trust the casino manager. He readily hired Jack, couldn’t count, etc. He must have been in on the scam. Part of it may have involved him diverting money during the diversionary robbery. Or the books weren’t balanced and a sham robbery was needed to “correct” them.
I hadn’t thought about Jani and Jack Sr.'s well being afterwards. I’ll have to ponder that one.
Bella’s role is also a mystery. She just happens to be around when Jack encounters the first cheater outside the casino. She stops working at the casino immediately thereafter for no explained reason (although the question is explicitly asked) and then she suddenly turns up in Jack’s arms at the end. I never trust a women who suddenly appears topless in front of the new guy for no real reason.
Why did he continue using public transport after the book started selling when he hated it so much???
I realize this movie came out a while ago but I just watched it and have questions as well, things that don’t make sense.
OK, so the girlfriend finds the money and hears the message about when the sting is supposed to take place. Rather than tell Jack she erases the message and calls tells the police.
So, when the sting does go down, Jack is clueless. The sting is stopped because the girlfriend tipped off the police.
We find out later Jack’s father is in South Africa with the woman who told Jack about the sting and how she was in trouble, which is why Jack agreed to do the sting, in the first place.
But since the sting was foiled, since Jack’s girlfriend called the police and Jack was not culpable since he didn’t know when it was going to happen, how did Jack’s father and his girlfriend profit from the foiled sting?
The girlfriend, Marion, did contact her police friend about the heist. This was stated to Jack at the coroner’s.
The phone call message was intentionally left for Marion to overhear since Jani knew Jack would be at work and were counting on her to report it (she was Jack’s conscience after all).
Jack’s father used Jack by placing him on the inside. Jack’s father manipulated Jani to draw Jack in.
So what was to be gained by helping set up a heist and then forcing it to fail? Also how did Jani get back to S. Africa? I believe Jani and Jack’s father were in gambling debt to the same people and so they set them up. With them in jail, Jani and Jack’s father were free. Jani somehow got paid to set it all up and used that money to fly home.
