Caught this gem on Encore last night but was flitting about a missed a few scenes. First off, what was the deal with the death of his girlfriend? Did she get all this information about the heist from the one cryptic answering machine message that the South African woman left? Why did they kill her?
Also, are we to assume some heist went over in the casino with the fight at the craps table acting as a diversion? Were there any details on this?
I had this same question a while ago in this thread. I think the wife’s death is meant to be ambiguous, but I imagine she went to her superiors, which is why the heist failed. (But then his Dad called acting like it was a success, which is why I was confused).
I just saw this a few weeks ago. I got the notion that the girlfriend dying was actually totally unrelated to the heist-- that it was just a sort of unfair O. Henry style coincidence twist, and that she was killed at her own work as a security guard.
I wasn’t sure exactly why she died, but I have no problem with the girlfriend figuring out something was up based on that message on the machine.
After all, she found the giant wad of cash a few days earlier hidden in the kitchen. Clive didn’t really have a life beyond the casino, so it’s not a leap to figure out that a mysterious message that indicates a date and time when he will be working there, would probably reference some form of badness.
So she calls her other boyfriend and says somethings up at the casino, and leaves it at that.
