Crystal Pepsi?

Barq’s makes root beer and two kinds of cream soda–regular and red. I remember going to Biloxi a few years back (where they make the stuff), and you had all sorts of Barq’s there, including the only bottled Barq I have ever seen.

All the underage kids need something to drink that’s slightly stronger than a wine cooler but doesn’t taste like alcohol. Zima’s about all they have left.

Miss Gretchen: About 20-25 years ago there was a place called the “Soda Pope Shoppe” in the midwestern US which sounds amazingly similar to what you’re describing. You bought it in these big plastic cases which were returnable (along with the bottles) for a refund of the deposit on them. The first time you bought it, it was a little high (because of the deposit) but refills were pretty cheap.

The bottles were strange: short squatty things, but fairly big around. I don’t really remember them having a lime soda, but they did have a really good LEMON soda (there was a lemon-lime, also, but it was nothing special).

I have a suspicion as to why Slice is popular, but it’s probably better not to go there.

This isn’t exactly a soda, but: can anyone explain to me why Sunny Delight is still on the market? To me it tastes like bad orange soda which has gone flat with flour in it.

How can you hate Sunny Delight? It’s orange juice without that bitter tangy citric taste in it.

It is all a matter of perception. Cola clear or colored tastes the same. Look at the ingredients of Coke it will say Carmel Color. They ADD it to cola to make it uniformly colored and dark. It’s just like in taste test after taste test people did prefer New Coke to Classic Coke. But old habbits die hard.

Ah the cola wars! I finished a book recently calles “What Were they Thinging”. It is basically about huge marketing failures. It mentions specifically the Crystal Pepsi/ New Coke debacle. It also goes on to talk about other blunders like and ice cream called “HOT CHOCOLATE”(Jalapano/Chocolate flavour) and a shampoo called “FOR OILY HAIR ONLY”. Would you be seen with that in your cart?? It is an entertaining read…check it out.

You sound reasonable…it must be time to up my medication

“Mommy, I want some Grape Nehi, or some Delaware Punch!” Wonder what happened to them?

In korea there’s a couple of brands of “milk sodas.” Amazingly they’re damned good; imagine a “thicker” cream soda.

“It all started with marbles in school…”

Let me tell you something: I have oily hair, and FOHO was the best I ever saw. Next time you’re in a store, go look among the many types of shampoo, and try and find one for oily hair. It’s all Normal hair or Dry hair. Come on, isn’t the whole purpose of shampoo to get your hair clean? So why do they go and put conditioning junk back in to make the hair all greasy again? Is everyone into dirty hair, and forgot to tell me? I don’t get it!

As a kid, I LOVED Wink – a sourish grapefruit soda. Now, I drink Squirt instead. My favorite, though, is Ruby Red Squirt – tropical punch with a grapefruitty kick.

I’m not a cola person but prefer RC to either Coke or Pepsi.

Moxie is NASTY, NASTY, NASTY.

I buy Pert Plus for oily hair and it seems to do the trick.

Back on to the subject of soda, I sure wish someone could tell me where to find (or send me a case of) vanilla Coke in a bottle or can. Around here, it’s only available at retro-1950’s soda fountains. Yummmmm

Daniel, I remember apple pie Snapple! I tried it once and was hooked. Every time I go into a store I check the Snapple section to see if it’s back. Will it ever return??

The other flavour I liked was iced tea with mint. Can’t find that anymore either.

I didn’t like Apple Pie Snapple so much; I thought it was too cinnamony or something. But Snapple another one at the same time, I think it was called Peach Melba? I really liked and miss that one.

Gr8kat, my guess is that the diners make their own vanilla coke by adding vanilla to coke. You could do it yourself; experiment a bit to get the proportions right and you’re smilin.

Whoo hooo! The return of the best drinks post!

Got one question. Is there a passion fruit soda anywhere? I remember drinking it once and that had to be THE best flavor I ever tasted. Now I can’t find it anywhere.

Re: Vernors:

Yes, it was wussified a number of years ago. Now it’s no better than most other softdrinks. It used to be the stuff of the gods! A softdrink to die for!

AFAIK, Vernors was the first soda pop. Before Coke, before Pepsi, before anything else carbonated, there was Vernors. At least, I read that somewhere.

And back when Vernors was a regional thing, it was WUNNERFUL! It was the stuff of the gods. I would give me left arm to get my hands on some of the real stuff. I can still buy Vernors, but now it’s this wussified-for-national-distribution bland crap that happened when the family owned company was bought out by some huge firm and they tried to make Vernors appeal to the mass market. All the BITE is gone! The first gulp doesn’t induce fits of coughing any more. The uninitiated no longer go through facial contortions upon their first encounter. It probably sells more now that it’s been wussified, but for those of us who had the REAL stuff, it’s just not the same. It’s a pale imitation of its former self; a ghostly, haunting reminder of what once was.

Re: Jones Soda:

Jones is getting a bigger following down here. I’ve seen it various places around the US. They have a Bubble Gum flavor which is novel, and some other interesting ones too. I’m not big on their Cola flavor though.

Re: Misc Softdrinks

Recently I’ve noticed a trend towards extremely high priced “yuppy” soft drinks. I’m not taking Hansons and whatnot, but seriously expensive stuff that’s going for $7(US) for 4 modest sized bottles. I don’t recall the names off hand, but there are at least 3-4 different brands it seems, with some odd flavors and a very yuppish marketing approach, very nice looking bottles, lota sasparilla type flavors, and so on.

peas on earth

Didn’t Pepsi make something that was clear and tasted sort of like sprite or something awhile back? TEAM or something?

Down here in Savannah, I’ve seen lots of Jones sodas, but only sold by the bottle. Most people I know tell me they’re good, but I’ve never gotten around to trying them.
Someone mentioned Jolt (my favorite sleep subsitute). Has anyone else seen their new flavors? They have original Jolt, Cherry Jolt, Citrus Climax (wins award for most interesting soft drink name. Tastes like SUPERPOWERED Mountain Dew/Surge), an orange drink and a clear grape drink that wasn’t too bad. But now these variants have disappeared around here. Found some in Florida on a road trip though.
And just to stay on topic, yep that Crystal Pepsi tasted nasty.

Has anyone tried Pepsi One? Yuck! I drink a god awful amount of soda so I don’t really have a preferance of Coke vs Pepsi. I just mix it up for variety.Usually go for what’s on sale. I tried Pepsi One and MAN did it suck. Couldn’t even finish one can.
I haven’t seen many adds for it lately. I presume it’s gone the same way as it’s Crystal brethren.

I forgot to mention, the reason coke first started coloring their soda was to cover up irregularities in the mix. If it was colored a dark brown it was harder to tell if there were visible imperfections. They ironed out the variations in the mix problem a long time ago but the tradition of the color remains.
