Cuban Real Estate

Is it possible to, and is it desirable to buy a retirement property in Cuba?

I see a few problems.

  1. I am a gringo, with US and Panama passports. I will get around the trade restrictions by using a shell company to buy the property, but…

  2. Under the Communist regime in Cuba can ANYONE sell land to anyone else? Wouldn’t it all belong to The People? and…

  3. Since this would be a retirement property, we must consider the eventual fall of the current regime. How can I ensure someone from Miami won’t show up with a claim on “my” land?

(Of course there are also ethical considerations.)

Any thoughts? A number of web sites claim to sell residental properties in Cuba, but none of them seem to have any listings at the moment.

Paul, this is a monumentally bad idea. But if you’re still intent on it, as a foreigner you can not buy land in Cuba, however you may be able to buy an apartment or time share. I say may because since May of 2000 the Cuban government froze the sale of apartments to foreigners. As far as I know this has not changed. Of course this is part of why buying property in Cuba is a bad idea, laws there change at a moments notice and at the whim of Castro, and you have no recourse and no appeal.

Still, it would be a great place to get old in. I suspect you’re right though.

Paul, I second your idea. I have only overflown Cuba and would dearly love to visit/reside there. Unfortunately, (IMHO due to the Anti-Castro element in the US), it would be easier to buy/build in North Korea, Iran, Algeria, etc.
Hopefully, as we approach retirement age, we will have the oportunity to do so without being criminals.
Spain had been spending on Cuban infrastructure at one point. I googled “comprar propiedad” cuba playa (you want the beach, no?) anyway zip.

xiao, I don’t think the anti-Castro element in the US has much say in Cuban law, which is the one thing keeping any foreigners, US or otherwise, from owning land or property in Cuba.

(sigh!)
