Cultural Phenomenon That You Skipped

The Simpsons - as a kid, I never watched anything other than Nickelodeon. To this day I’ve seen maybe four Simpsons episodes.

All reality shows - never seen a single episode of Survivor, American Idol, Big Brother or any other such show.

Harry Potter - saw one of the movies (in a group with other people - not my idea,) fell asleep. Never read any of the books.
**
That whole Good Charlotte-type pop-punk music** - totally passed me by. I listened to the Spice Girls, Third Eye Blind and Marilyn Manson in sixth grade, the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies in seventh grade, Eminem in eighth grade, Nelly and stuff like that as a freshman and sophomore in high school - I went with along with lot of musical trends. But by the time I was a senior and all that Good Charlotte type music started becoming really popular, it just felt way too juvenile.
**
Cornhole** - it seems like every other college house and fraternity has people playing cornhole on the lawn in the summer these days, but I haven’t played it since I was a kid, and back then it wasn’t known as “cornhole.”

I’ve got another one;

If you held a gun to my head, I still could not name a single **Mariah Carey ** song.

I’d never heard of “Cornhole” until I moved to Ohio last summer. I’d never heard of “Good Charlotte type music” until the post just before mine, and still don’t know what it means.

I have a myspace account just to keep someone else from taking my name. I don’t use it and have never done anything with it. I deleted my Facebook account when people online started finding me. No biggie, because I really didn’t use it, either.

Most music growing up (70’s, 80’s, 90’s)

Most cartoons: Thundercats, ect.

Most movies.

No reality TV.
Though I’ll admit I’m trying some of these missed things out, to see what I did miss. You might try the same. Or not, your choice. Except for reality TV.

Anime.

I have never done any of the below:

Owned a video game system.

Watched any of the primetime reality shows.

Seen anything Star Wars or Star Trek

Visited My Space or Facebook.

Listened to any “pop” music the past 20 years.

Worn a pair of short that were long enough to touch my knees.

Eaten sushi.

I didn’t go to Woodstock. It sounded like too much camping out in a field with inadequate facilities.

Turned out I was right, but…

In the 70’s: Never did disco (hated the music)

In the 80’s: Never did country (after “Urban Cowboy” made it mainstream)

In the 90+'s: Never liked rap in any way, shape, or form

  • No “American Idol”, “Dancing with the Stars”, etc.
  • Seen a couple parts of “Survivor” shows, but never understood the appeal
  • No “Seinfeld”
  • No “Friends”
  • No “Buffy”

Probably lots more, but that’s all that comes to mind right now.

I completely missed the Seinfield era.

I’ve never seen a single minute of any of the Godfather movies.

What?

I’ve never seen the Godfather movies either. And I pretty much haven’t worn a watch in ~15 years or so. I just find them uncomfortable and not worth it. I never needed to know what time it was THAT BAD and now there’s cell phones so a watch is totally unnecessary.

Never watched Beavis and Butthead.
I raised children in the 80’s without a minivan.
Never owned a game system.
Never owned an iPod or portable MP3 player.

Never watched (in no particular order): Laugh-in, that show with Archie Bunker, American Idol, Seinfeld–actually there were a bunch of them that I was totally out of the loop around this time, I don’t even remember the names of them. I will admit to wasting too much of my life watching Dallas, General Hospital, and Desperate Housewives (just the first year of DH though).

I had to come to the straight dope to find out who Jessica Simpson was. (Actually, I had never heard of Paris Hilton before I saw her name here, either.)

Come to think of it, I had never heard of a Chick Tract before the sdmb. Are they mainstream? Because I, obviously, am not.

Born in 1982.

I’ve never watched:
American Idol
The Sopranos
Lost
24
Survivor
Supernatural
Big Brother
CSI (or any of the spin-offs or any of the “procedural” shows)
Law & Order (or any of the spin-offs)
House
Monk

Actually, this list is going to get unwieldy, so I’ll just tell you the popular shows I do watch: The Office. Also, I have been sucked into a few reality tv shows–well, three. America’s Next Top Model, Rock of Love 2, Hell’s Kitchen. If it’s currently a popular television show, or has been popular in the past 3 years, and it’s not one of those 4 things, I haven’t seen it. Strangely enough, there’s a television in every room of the house, I have a good cable package, and I have the tv on constantly. I just don’t watch “contemporary” tv.

Books I have not read, nor will I:
The Lord of the Rings
Harry Potter
The Da Vinci Code

Movies:
Actually, I haven’t been to a movie theater to see a recently released film since last June. So if there are any recent cinema cultural phenomenon, I have not participated.

Second Life.

Meh.

(Born in '88)
Until last Thursday, while I was doing laundry, I had never seen any of South Park at all. (If a guy hadn’t been doing his laundry at the same time, I still wouldn’t have, but since the show had just started after Colbert Report, I couldn’t pretend it wasn’t on, so I let him pick. I wanted to watch Robot Chicken, or maybe Good Eats, depending on which was a rerun or, if both were reruns, which I’d seen more.)
I’ve never seen American Idol, except for the last minute or so of episodes prior to House or Bones.
I’ve seen approximately 20 minutes of The Sopranos, only because a friend had to finish his supper before we could hang out in another room, and his roommate was watching it.
Pokemon, Tamagotchi, and pretty much any game or electronic pet imported from Japan were right out.
The [Noun/Adjective] Movies- Date Movie, Epic Movie, etc. One friend forced me to watch the Willy Wonka sequence in Epic Movie, I think it was, but that’s all.
Never watched a Lifetime Original Film, even ironically.
I might be a bit young for this, but never watched the X-Files. (I might just watch the upcoming movie for Callum Keith Rennie, though.)

TV- you’re kidding me. Like so many things, I can pick up information about things, and might even see glimpses of them sometimes. Unless it’s in reruns, or available really cheap on VHS, and even then, it is very unlikely that I have any idea.
Movies- screw 'em. Same as above.
Grunge- that worked GREAT for me! My natural appearance is stylish!
Music- whatever’s on the radio station I happen to have on, and it might take a while for me to notice what it is.
