oh blah… Bill H was just making trouble because he didn’t have anything interesting to say so he just ran his mouth about something he didn’t have a clue about. The title of the thread had cunt in it because the book is called “Cunt”. I couldn’t think of a more appropriate title for a thread.
Check this…

I especially like the looks the guy is getting from the crowd.
A: You cunt! [sub]whatever that means.[/sub]
B: Who you talkin’ to?
A: Well, if the shoe fits…
B: So, it’s a shoe, now? You prick!
A: Well, thank you, and if I do say so myself, a rather large prick.
I’m going home to listen to the Butthole Surfers now.
CuntCuntCuntCuntCunnnt…Cunt…Cunt…
Yup. Everyone likes the word cunt.
I’m done reading this mess; I have enough real things to argue about in my life. But I wanted to thank Simetra for the backup.
Band name!
I’m not trying to add fuel to the fire, but a poster named “tramp” with less than 100 posts** starts a thread called “Cunt- anyone care to comment” featuring an OP with three short sentences and is surprised when people start questioning the authors and posters motives.
If this were the CuntFest message board, then your reaction would be justified. But this is the SDMB where things run to the more esoteric/sarcastic/juvenile. Know your audience. If you truly were familiar with this place you would have titled your thread “Contrversial Book on Women’s Issues” or something less inflammatory and then led with an OP that summarized the books message and maybe gave your thoughts on it’s content. Instead you throw “Cunt” in our faces and expect us to know that you mean the obscure (to most people) book.
Don’t go accusing people of making trouble when in a lot of people’s minds, you started it.
** Lest I be flayed for this, let me just say that if you have that few posts, people around here do not have enough past history on you to know whether you are a serious scholar or a troll. Given the thread title, this is not obvious.
Count me in, Bill. I’ve personally never been a big fan of ‘in-your-faceism’ and shock for shock’s sake. The use of the term ‘cunt’ offends me? Guess again, sister. I’m really not easily shocked. This idea of giving ‘cunt’ its lettres de noblesse of old, on the other hand, is pure bullshit; as other posters much more versed in the matter than I have already pointed out, the word never was an expression of respect. Want to innovate?
Do I need to add that I’m one of the few who haven’t read the book?
Dear tramp, I just wanted to back up what Why A Duck said a couple of posts back.
I first saw this thread days ago, but assumed it was some youngster trying to be offensive - there’s been a rash of that here lately.
I’m afraid the points that have been raised (which certainly bear discussion) have got bogged down in a sludgy free-for-all because the tone of the discussion wasn’t clear from the outset.
Usually on these boards, the best discussions are in threads that are ostensibly on women’s issues. I think the thread title and donnybrook may have scared off the usual crew.
It might be worth trying again, if you feel up to it.
Now I feel that I’d better check out that “what’s the worst thing that’s come out of your ass” thread. (sigh)
Redboss
I don’t see a problem with the OP or his/her subsequent posts. I read them all, and the problem I see is some people, as usual, flying off the fucking handle against a newbie. tramp has said nothing offensive, and was IMO, just trying to get the discussion back on track.
Reread every post tramp has made, and tell me he was trolling. Bullshit!
Bill H came into the thread with an attitude, and tramp testily responded, so what, most people would have done the same. It started with Bill H and vivablur.
Cut tramp some slack!
And Duck, yes, he asked for opinions on the book. That’s all. DUH!
Get a grip.
Now, I’ve argued with Bill H. several times.
But I’m gonna have to back him up here. He did not come in with an attitude. And his first post, though admittedly not about the book, was right on the money.
The word is an insult, one that will get you smacked royally. To use it as a title is inflammatory.
I agree. It seems like a cheap stunt.
So why don’t you tell us some more of the ideas from this book? So far all you’ve told us about it is the derivation of the word “cunt” that it proposes (incorrectly, I think). What other things does the book discuss?
Oh well I apologize for my small number of posts. I’ve just recently discovered this messageboard. Thank you all for the warm reception.
The OP was ONLY to encourage discussion about the book, a book I recently read and thought was worthy of discussion. And no need to insult my messageboard handle, I’ve seen others that were worse.
I’m still waiting to hear some more about this book. What other ideas does it discuss?
Hi fellow PennStaters! I’ve never read the book, but I’d like to. (The colouring book is sounds like fun, too!) Quick question: was C**tFest also called Sex Fair at some point? I am currently working on the commonwealth college’s Governmental Affairs committee, trying to reverse Penn State’s newly acquired bad image in state gov’t, and Sex Fair is one of our main concerns. Any information you could give me would be great, since this is precisely what I will be discussing with a few of our state reps come spring.
I read the book Cunt and I thought it was fascinating. I’d need to find another copy of it to be able to summarize it adequately but I recalled it as being a really vivid and passionate feminist argument on the reclaiming of women’s sexuality.
Welcome to the board. I will never insult your handle.
Theads do get hijacked, from time to time. This one had ‘hijack’ written all over it. The title almost demanded it. Perhaps starting another thread with a different title??
Sex Fair was a different event although sponsored by some of the same people. Sex Fair had the “antamoically correct” gingerbread men and women. CuntFest was just a celebration of this book with a speech by the author. Admission to these events were limited to PSU students over 18.
Wendell- the book is about women. It is about women’s bodies, women’s struggles and just the life of women in general. The author deals with everything from religion to a girl’s first period with frank and refreshing language. I’m by no means a feminist but this book certainly got my mind thinking about the unique things women deal with and are capable of.
O.K., but you’re still being pretty vague. Could you tell us more of the ideas in the book?
