I guess I should read this book to find out what I need to “reclaim.” I’m pretty sure I’ve claimed everything, all along!
ps - some of this discussion makes me think of someone painting their face green and then getting mad that people stare at them. Or stabbing their face full of pierces and feeling discriminated against because no one wants to hire them to meet the public.
(I’m such an old fogey).
I had no intention of insulting your handle, I’m a big fan of creative naming. My only point was that we have a user named tramp (a fine word, but conotation laden) starting a thread called Cunt (another fine word, but it usually tops the list of most offensive). If I were to use either of those words around my female friends, I would most likely be extracting a high heel out of groin. Seeing them both together activates my radar.
I’m not sure how much board history you are aware of, but we have cycles of people who post here just to raise hackles. We recently had one who would find the most inflammatory conspiracy laden tripe you can imagine, do a quick cut and paste, then pop off a “I’m not sure how I feel about this, please debate.” The posts would fly in asking this poster to defend the statements, or at least take a side. Invariably the reponse would be “All I wanted was a serious discussion, not an attack. When things got taken to the Pit, I refused to go there because I offend easily.” The verdict - trolling. Your thread title and OP brought back some bad memories (for me at least).
I do admire the fact that you came back to defend your ideas from your critics.
So after all that rambling, welcome to the boards tramp. We can be a fun lot, but we tend to be a little sensitive to people who seem to be intentionally trying to pull our tails. Just be a little bit more clear (“Cunt - Feminism’s Finest Book”) in your titles and be sensitive that certain words trigger strong responses.
Wendell, the author of Cunt is seeking to dispell the myths that women’s bodies are unclean (during mensturation and otherwise) and also is trying to get women to be more in touch with the natural processes of their bodies.
tramp, I think Wendell is looking for a little more back up there.
Don’t just tell us what someone says…there’s not a lot we can feedback on that way. Tell us the WHY behind it and we’ll take a stab at agreeing or disagreeing.
Looka t what happened with the etymology of ‘cunt’. You gave us some back up there and people jumped to support it or tear it down.
So feed us some more specifics. Try it this way:
Author has this premise…
Author believes this becuase…
You agree or disagree because…
And that way we’ll have a real debate here.
Heck, it’s got to be better than discussing the origin of ‘cunt’ any farther.
Thanks JillGat for the spelling lesson, it is great to know nothing gets by you.
And look, I’m not going to write a book report. If anyone wants to know what the book is about, then go read the book. As I have said before, I was wondering if anyone had read the book and what they thought about it.
Thanks for the clarification. I see that all of us at non-main-campus campuses really are missing out on some stuff. It sounds like a very interesting book, even though I don’t usually subscribe to feminism. I’ll have to buy it after the birthday money comes rolling in. =)
Sorry your thread didn’t turn out the way you wanted it to, tramp. I haven’t read the book, although now I think I will.
You’ve got me curious-probably others too!
My initial reaction is that this “'cunt’s derrivation is
positive, we need to reclaim ourselves, oral bcp’s are not good because they don’t require us to touch our genitals”
(WTF??) sounds like a bunch of ill-researched, urban legend-
type bunk. But I would read it before offering opinions.
I DO think that some of the posters in this thread are making themselves sound ENORMOUSLY silly and immature:
Ummmm…okay…
this stuff is taking away from the actual intent of your thread. Bottom line, though, seems like not many have read it. Maybe offer up the subject again in a month or two?
