I just read where they are going to try Cupid again.
I really enjoyed it with Jeremy Piven and Paula Marshal. I’m not convinced that the new one will fly, but I’ll give it a try. Any other fans of the original show willing to try it?

Even though since that show (which I LOVED) was cancelled and Piven has turned out to be more than a bit of a jackass–I thought it was a fun idea and I will watch at least one episode.
I loved the original. I will give it a try. Is “Felix” the lead character? I see that it is played by the guy who played George Luz in Band of Brothers. Since I continue to be obsessed by BoB I always tune in to watch something one of them is in.
Funny enough one of the cancelled shows from last fall, ‘Valentine’, had a very similar premise. There, Cupid was just one member of the team, and not the most prominent - the lead role was his mother, Aphrodite, but Cupid was in there.
Looks like it premiers tonight, if anyone wants to try it.
Loved the original, but don’t plan on trying the new one. I keep hoping they’ll put out the original on DVD, but no luck yet.
Loved the original, and apparently that’s why it was canceled. Any non-news TV show my wife and I like gets canceled. So, in the interest of good TV for the rest of you, we’ll refrain from watching.
Based on the commerical, I give this six episodes, tops.
Anyone watch? I liked it, but I think mostly I liked the reporter character (I’m gonna have to look up that actress and see what else she’s been in), and of course she was just a one-off character. The guy who plays Cupid is good, and the psychiatrist is okay–if a bit of a cliche.
I liked the original show, but it was so short-lived and so long ago that I don’t remember it very well. I was surprised to hear they were remaking it, and I’m afraid it won’t last long this time either. I’ve hardly seen any ads for it, plus any new show that I like gets cancelled these days. I’ll keep watching, though. My only other Tuesday show is “Fringe.”
Tangent: No “Reaper”?
Tuesday night being a blank aside from “Reaper”, I gave it a shot. Surprisingly (to me), I liked it. I guess I’m a softie at times.
I kept trying to think of where I’d seen Sarah Paulson & Camille Guaty before.
Harriet Hayes from Studio 60… & Franny from The Nine, respectively. Oh, yeah.
I didn’t watch much of the Paula Marshall/Jeremy Piven one, but I’m surprised & glad they’re giving the concept another shot. And it’s generally nice to see Bobby Canavale in a role that isn’t about emasculating him.
I liked the pilot of new Cupid a lot. Marguerite Moreau (who played the reporter) & her wide-set eyes are trés sexy.
I liked the “Ed Ross” bit & how he chose the “Trevor Pierce” name. And it appears that he may really be Cupid. I wonder if the vagueness of whether Olympus is real will hurt audience engagement in the show. Then again, Canavale is a more credible Cupid than Piven, neh?
My wife and I watched the pilot for the new series, and enjoyed it. I never saw the original.
If I didn’t mess up, I recorded it and won’t watch until the weekend.
I’ll give it at least one more try. I really liked the original, and appreciated that it was filmed in and around Chicago, so I’m kind of disappointed that this is yet another NYC show. Canavale is appealing, but not as quirky as Jeremy Piven was. I kind of wish they weren’t hinting so heavily that he is, indeed supernatural. I’d prefer to be left guessing.
Another person who loved the original (I still remember the finale of one show, where the couple is in the planetarium with “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” playing) checking in.
I thought it was seriously “meh.” The shrink is not only a cliche, but a one-dimensional cliche (“That sort of innuendo is not acceptable!”) with no attempt at reality (what the hell are they doing talking on the phone at the end, and doesn’t she have a career that would keep her too busy to run around to Coney Island?). And I’m not a big enough fan of Bobby Canavale to hang in there.
Nope, sorry.
The “how much unreality can you accept?” thread might be of some relevance to this discussion.
Cupid is one of my favorite shows of all time – I didn’t realize that they were going to give it another go. And I almost missed it – if The Daily Show was still on at 10pm (it plays at 10:30 here), I probably would have. While I don’t usually venture in Cafe Society, I had to see if there was a thread…thanks for not disappointing.
I had found the old episodes online at some point a few years back, including the script for an unmade episode or two and a blurb/interview about how the series was supposed to finish (i.e., does Trevor make his 100 matches? Is he really Cupid? What happens to Claire?). In a sort of cosmic coincidence, my wife was away on business last week, so I was setting up an old computer in the living room as a media center and reorganizing my hard disks. I watched the first episode of the original Cupid series to make sure the setup was working properly, followed by the second…just because it was there and I like it that much. I held off on the rest because I’d much rather watch them with my wife.
Having just watched the pilot of the original, it was interesting to see the similarities and differences. For instance, in the original, Cupid’s name was Trevor Hale; in the new one, it’s Trevor Pierce. Yes, both were taken from the sign hanging over the committee, but the sign was worded slightly differently. Some of the dialogue is close to word-for-word; some of it is totally different. The non-Trevor storyline was different and got a bit more time devoted to it. I’ll miss the opening credits theme song by The Pretenders (or Chrissie Hynde solo?)…it didn’t get played during the original pilot, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the new one did the same (I don’t think there was a notable “theme” song in last night’s episode).
IMO, Piven was much better as Cupid…not that the new guy is bad, just not as good. Piven was much more kinetic and, more importantly, he assumed the role more fully. Cannavale seems to me to be trying it on…but it just doesn’t fit quite right. I think the new Doctor is comparatively awful – both the character and the actress. While Piven’s Cupid often got the better of Paula Marshall’s Claire, she was at least scripted to keep up her end of the banter pretty well. The new Claire is pretty bland…and devoid of any wit whatsoever. While that has the effect of exaggerating Trevor’s antics to appear relatively zany and madcap, it really just highlights the absence of the original’s flair.
One of my favorite episodes from the original series is the 2nd (“The Linguist”). IMDB lists the second new one as episode 6, and with a new title. Weird. I guess we’ll see if there’re all new plots or not. Even though, IMHO, the new incarnation isn’t as good as the old, I’ll at least tune in for a few more episodes to see if it’s worth watching – I can’t imagine it’ll get to be even as good as the original, though.
I would have to say no. I rather preferred Piven in the original to the actor current version. He was just more engaging, quirky and carried the dialogue better. Going by memory I also think that writing on the original was snappier.
As for the “is he, or isn’t he” aspect, I think it’s about at the same level as the original, and I think that it’s about right where it is. Over the course of the old series it appeared to me to be that there was something supernatural going on. Between the “score keeper” acting the way it did (same in the original as in last night’s show) to the organ donior episode of the original, there was ample evidence that he might just be who he says he is.
I’ll give it another episode or two, but the new lead just doesn’t compare well to Piven for me and the shrink is just nowhere near the original.
I always had a thing for Paula Marshall, which is why I tried the original series.
But Sarah Paulson is hot too - I am probably alone is saying I liked her in Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.
I’ve missed out on Reaper–didn’t know about it when it started. I’ve heard good things, so I need to find a way to catch up on the episodes that have aired.
I totally agree! Thanks for the name–I’m off to look her up on IMDB.
