So, Larry and the gang are back, starting off with a nice homage to Seinfeld.

Highlights for me were the Girl Scout Cookie guilt theme, as well as the horror of the first period/tampon use…

Overall, not sure if this episode hit the mark, so to speak… Maybe it was just getting re-adjusted to the discomfort of watching the socially awkward situations that occur in Curb… not that the show has ever been believable, but some of these anecdotes were too much (e.g., the switch of lawyer, closing the divorce without talking about assets).

Anyone else watching?

Oops…somehow my DVR missed this.
Will have to see the first episode On Demand and start taping it again.
I love this show!
Will get back to you after seeing the first episode this season.

Yeah, I wasn’t too thrilled with the divorce thing. It’s not like he HAS to sign the agreement if he doesn’t want to. They didn’t go to court, so it’s not a done deal until he signs.

We tried to rewatch Season 7 this week, and were reminded why we stopped watching this series in the first place. So no, we won’t be watching it.

And before anybody accuses me of threadshitting, please see the last sentence in the OP.

I believe the whole point of Larry getting screwed out of the house is so this season can take place in New York.

What the hell is Leon still doing there, anyway?

Season 7 missed for the most part in the non-Seinfeld reunion stories, but the Seinfeld arc was one of the best things Curb has done and gave that series a proper “finale”.

I really enjoyed the opener to the new season. I’m a huge Paul F. Tompkins fan though, and thought he was hilarious as Larry’s first lawyer. The shofar on the desk threw me over the edge.

It seems to me they have ramped up the cussing a bit. Not that it bothers me. In fact, I could handle 30 minutes straight of Susie Essman! Super Dave looks like he’ll have more to do or say this time, and I also see fun if they can keep the Tompkins character going, but that looks like a one-off.

Lumberg is a great possibility, too.

The season seven episode “Denise Handicap”, along with watching Borat in theaters when it first came out, made me laugh the hardest I’ve laughed in the last twenty years.

I think I learned how a tampon works about the same time as Larry.

Do you respect wood?

I enjoy this show more and more every year. I think it’s become less improvised, or else they’ve gotten so good at improvising that it seems like tightly written dialogue.

Oh, I forgot to weigh in with my opinion on the eighth season opener. I thought it was prettyy, prettyyyyy, pretty good!

What I would like to know is if there’s anybody (writer, comic, whatever) in Larry David’s league for finding the most petty, mundane and silly things that just annoy the shit out of you and then turning them into a five-minute riff that leaves you in stitiches. The ring stain as an example. The tampon. The asshole restaurant guy with the buffet.

Who’s even in the running with Larry?

No one. He’s in his own league when it comes to that kind of comedy.

Has anyone ever compiled a list of the everyday mundane slights/annoyances that Larry has had to deal with over the seasons? Something like the list of minor trivialities Jerry has dumped various girls over. Maybe I should start a thread for us to crowd-source this list…

I liked it, though I think the common sense factor gets dropped every so often (why wouldn’t Larry call the girl scout’s mom ASAP?). I sort of realized that I didn’t in fact want Larry and Cheryl back together, so I’m glad they’re divorcing. Unfortunately, that means less of Wanda Sykes, right?

Susie Essman stole the show, especially with her divorce rant. Like Zeldar said, I could easily hear her cuss all show long. Funkhauser palling up with Larry looks like fun, too. I also don’t understand how Leon is still in the house - it would be more plausible if he was actually doing something for Larry, but he’s a leech fucking random women in his bed - that’s grounds for getting turfed out on one’s ear, especially by David standards.

That would be a fun thread! Go for it!

I thought it was a good episode, but the final scene really confused me. It didn’t seem to have a proper wrap-around that make most Curb episodes great. It was also strange that they didn’t have a follow up with the tampon story - there should have been a scene of either Larry and the Dodgers owner arguing over the tampon, or at least explaining how Larry was able to go from not being allowed into his house, to being able to walk straight into his office and tell him about the non-Jew lawyer, without any confrontation.

Leon is still around because he’s fucking HILARIOUS. If you want a reason why Larry would let him stay around, maybe it’s because of white guilt (which has been explored before in CYE), and maybe it’s because Larry has tried and failed before to kick him out. Whatever, he’s an amazing addition to the show and I hope he sticks around even after Larry moves to his new place.

Was I the only one who would have thanked Larry for his help with the tampon? It’s a weird situation, no doubt, but he handled it pretty well (especially by Larry standards!). Then again, I got to see the interaction, rather than hear about it from my daughter… but I still don’t see anger at Larry as a reasonable reaction.

Other than the tampon stuff, I thought this episode was a little meh by Curb standards (meaning I generally laughed, but didn’t laugh a ton). Really, the joke was if you want a lawyer, better get a Jew, which – merits about stereotyping and validity and all that aside – is sooooo played.

ETA: Yeah, fusoya, it did seem like they cut a scene of Larry and Gary Cole arguing about the tampon. They were in the Dodgers’ office like none of that had happened.

I thought it was the weakest CYE episode in many seasons. CYE is the only show in the history of television that consistently makes me laugh out loud, literally. Pretty much almost every episode. There were some funny moments in this one, but none induced laughter from me. But I’m sure they will make up for it.

Except that the Jew was a terrible lawyer!
