I asked this question a while ago, but I need some clarification. My wife would be cutting it for me, with clippers, I probably wouldn’t do it myself. At least one of the responses in the other thread described using different size clippers for the top and sides of your head (e.g., 1/2" sides, 3/4" on the top). So, how do you do that? What defines “top” and “sides”? Is it trial and error? Just wing it and see what works? I’m not that vain, obviously, but I want my hair to be cut correctly. To cover up, I suppose we could always just use one size everywhere.
Also, where do you cut your hair and how do you clean up? I always get my hair cut at a time when i can go home and shower. I hate all those stray hairs everywhere.
I cut my own hair sometimes with clippers. The pair i have comes with an attachment for around the ear. It is angled so it cuts close at the ear but longer as it goes up. I make 1 swipe with this and then use whatever attachment I want for the rest. Do this in the kitchen or where you have no carpet. It simply sweeps up. The whole process takes 5 minutes tops.
I usually do haircuts for the whole family at home, including my own. I use clippers on the boys.
Use the shorter attachment for over the ears and for the lower curve of your skull in the back. Then switch to the longer one for the rest. You (or your wife) can use scissors to clean up any noticeable mismatched areas and to straighten out the neckline, bangs/hairline in front, and over the ears.
If either of you is a bit nervous about trying it, I’d suggest heading for an inexpensive clip-joint or a cosmetology school, get a clipper cut, and have her observe. She’ll have a better idea of how to handle the clippers and will feel better about it the first time out.
Good luck!

Flowbee. Best investment I ever made about 10 yrs ago. Works great so long as you don’t have real long hair (no longer than about 5 inches). Guarenteed “even” cuts. Don’t need anyone else 'cept yourself, the flowbee, a vacuum cleaner, and mirror. I “clean-up” the sides and neck with some electric barber’s clippers. Another advantage is no clean-up since all the hair gets sucked up into the vacuum.
I cut my own hair about a year and a half ago. After a few beers (I know, I know) I tried to give myself bangs.
::Rez leans back, a wistful expression comes over her face:: Man, that was one amazing mullet!
I cut DangerDad’s hair at home. He has very think, wavy hair, which is nice, since it would cover up any mistakes. I’ve gotten quite good at it by now, though. One big advantage of home haircutting is that I know exactly what his hair does and what I should do to it; he never has to explain or hope!
I use a 1/2" attachment on the back for a preliminary, but otherwise I just get the hair through my fingers and cut it at the length I want myself. I use the left and right deelies for behind the ears.
My SIL uses the attachments, but her husband’s hair is much finer and shorter. I wouldn’t dare touch it.
My wife cuts mine in the dining room – there’s a tile floor there, so cleanup is just sweeping with a broom. I hit the showers immediately after she cuts it, to minimize shedding.
