If the :wally is being abused, then do away with it.
[ul]
[li]It’s origin is shrouded in a history that too few knew.[/li]
[li]That history is on shaky ground considering the possibility that the group mourning is shrouded in the possibility of a hoax.[/li]
[li]The design is a disaster for two reasons: 1) Playful winking plus insult = wha?; and, 2) It’s too damned big, it screws up the spacing of a second line of text like this one which has hopefully wrapped around on your screen you :wally [/li]
[li]The wally can only cause grief on a board where some people have a cow if someone uses the rolleyes  on them. And when I say have a cow, I mean it. They pass, through an opening of their genitalia, a full grown holstein that gets up and starts nibbling on the sea grass on the window sill of their breakfast nook.[/ul] [/li]Get rid of the wally, you :wally’s!
:wally’es
:wallyes
That was wonderful!

I mean, really. If the only place I can use the smiley is in the one forum where I can let loose much more colorful and potent language, why even keep the code for it?
I really don’t see why this thread was started. It’s not like anyone was threatening being banned or anything, the moderator saw something he didn’t like and said to stop. Why does there need to be a sticky to warn you? If Czarcasm doesn’t see it to be a big enough problem to warrant a sticky, and he wants to warn people individually when it happens, I don’t really see the difference between that warning and a sticky.
Becuase, Petw- when you get “warned” they have then indeed "warned’ you. Which can & has (but not always) leads to the “you were warned- bye” banning notice.
Then again, that also makes extra work for the Staff.
But I don’t want a “sticky”- I (along with many others- simpley want the :wally to be removed so that the mistake can’t be made.
Warnings here are indeed serious, PetW: There is a strong possibility you will only get one.
When I chided Czarcasm for not putting up a stickie, I was interpreting his warning as the official inception of a new rule: Using the :wally outside the Pit is a bannable offense. I thought and still think that this rule, if it indeed exists as such, is a very good reason for creating a sticky, since it is not only nonobvious but carries with it a strong punishment. It’s as if xash decided that posting to GQ about medical topics is now a bannable offense. The reasonable person simply wouldn’t see the rule as being obvious or necessary.
Most people don’t see putz as an insult. They see it as a funny word. (Lots of Yiddish words sound funny to American ears.) The fact that the smilie is a clone of the winking smilie with the absurd text balloon added reinforces the comical aspects. Hell, the only reason I used it to prod Czarcasm was because it is, indeed, the topic of this thread: I don’t see it as an insult in any normal context.
Now, the point has been raised that we are to respect the rulings of Mods and Admins. I understand and agree with this. In the context of this discussion, however, it’s a strawman. Czarcasm has apparently created a new rule, and since that rule carries with it the penalty of banning it really needs to be announced outside of one thread in one forum that most members will never visit.
Ignorance is no excuse. Neither is a vain recourse to common sense that is neither common nor sensical.
No. The only Wally smiley is the :wally . The ;j was unrelated to him.
:wally :wally :wally
Just increase your use of putz smiley tenfold in the BBQ Pit to make up for it
:wally :wally :wally :wally :wally :wally :wally
