“There shall be no use of the putz smiley in MY forum!”
Just giving everyone the heads up.
There’s good moderating and there’s going on a power-trip. Forum wide banning of a smiley is the latter.
Start your own message board, and refuse Czarcasm’s request for Moderator privileges. That should solve the problem.
Actually, I think pretty much everyone else here knew that already. Insulting other posters outside the Pit is verboten. Use of the :wally smiley has consistently been interpreted as a personal insult, therefore likewise verboten. Nothing new or different in the thread you are complaining about.
What else have ya got?
I did start my own board, and you know what? The bastid hasn’t even registered yet.
I always thought that because :wally was winking while he said “Putz!”, it was more of a jibbing-haha-I’m-teasing-you kind of smilie than one meant for insult.
That’s how I use it. Hello, the smiley is smiling and winking.
A couple of posters have already illustrated the problem as I see it. The putz smiley is done with a wink by some, but taken as an insult by others.
Seems like a good modding decision to me.

That’s for not creating a goddamned sticky thread in IMHO advising people of your latest fiat. You’ve had an hour, bucko, get with the program.
The putz smiley is and has been regarded as a personal insult in Great Debates as long as I’ve been around. I have no problem with it being regarded as such in other forums, but it needs to be known as such. Czarcasm should create (or have created) a sticky saying so before issuing warnings. (Again, as in GD)
It has already been stated(Great Debates, first sticky, second post) that the “Putz!” smiley is considered an insult, and should only be used in The BBQ Pit. Do we really need a separate sticky in every single forum stating basically the same thing, or can we just apply a little common sense here?
Amend the stickies in ATMB to expressly forbid the use of the :wally in all forums but the pit. No grey area!
Posters in IMHO and MPSIMS do not greatly overlap with posters in GD. (IMHO)
Agreed. GD is the only forum here that I don’t visit. Just about the only times I’ve been in there were when I scrolled while the focus was on the Forum Jump dropdown. The few times I’ve poked around, I saw a startling number of long-time posters whose names I’ve never heard - clearly they never, or very, very rarely, venture out of GD.
Did you put that rule on display down in the cellar in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying Beware of the Leopard? Because I would have been more likely to find it there than in a sticky in GD.
People could be giving away candy, money, and puppies in Great Debates, Cafe Society, and In My Humble Opinon, and I wouldn’t know about it until someone got pissed off and started pit thread or had a general question on the legality of sending puppies through the mail.
Would it be too fucking difficult to post board rules in one easily found Board Rules thread? Then maybe one stickies thread for each forum’s individual rules? Half of ATMB is stickies. Disorganization on your part is not cause for an excess of effort on ours.
Even if there is no rule stated, if a Mod tells you to knock something off, you knock it off. I don’t have a rule in GD telling people they can’t post in alternating pink and pale gray, but if someone posted that way and I told them “quit it”, I expect them to quit it, not argue that I don’t have it listed as a rule. So I see this “but the Putz rule is only in the GD stickies” as a bit of a red herring.
But how would the next person know not to use that color scheme? I guess it comes down to whether the use of colors or smilies is inappropriate in a particular instance, or forum wide. If you don’t want anyone posting in alternating pink and gray ever, then that needs to be in a sticky. If Czarcasm doesn’t want the putzy used at all as an insult in his forum, it should be in a sticky. If the putz isn’t to be used as an insult at all outside of the pit, that rule should be in a sticky in ATMB.
We’d have five bajillion stickies then, and still would not cover the creative ways the Teemsters can find to finesse “don’t be a jerk”. If something is a chronic and serious problem, I will make a sticky. If I think it is incidental or trivial, I don’t. If this is Czarc’s only warning you have ever seen in his forum for “Putz”, perhaps he thought it did not rate a sticky. He was quite mild in his initial warning, I thought.
When was :wally banned in all forums except the BBQ Pit?
I’ve been under the impression that it was barred from Great Debates, but acceptable elsewhere…
Does it strike anyone else as stupid that there’s a smiley that you’re only allowed to use in one forum?
If it’s that big a deal, get rid of the Wally.
