Czarcasm's Definitive Christmas Album

Great, I’ll feed it to my patients!

Yes, it’s Ann-Margaret and I like that version as well.

But The Moonglows’ song got new life in Christmas Vacation! Oh, and Diana Krall does a pretty good and sultry version of Christmastime also.

Already commented on your OP list with the very first reply in the thread. Don’t have any input on the songs that I didn’t mention.

There’s Twisted Sister’s White Christmas and The Christmas Song, if you’re into metal that is.

My apologies-taking you off the Fruitcake of the Month list.

If you just pick one version, are those the ones you would pick above all others?

Frosty The Snowman

Either the Jimmy Durante version or the duo of Leon Redbone and Dr. John

Baby It’s Cold Outside

Ricardo Montalban & Esther Williams

White Christmas

I never cared for this one, but Bing Crosby’s is still the best

The Christmas Song

Nat King Cole’s is the only version you’ll ever need

**
Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree**

Brenda Lee got it right the first time

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town

Fred Astaire’s version from the Mickey Rooney cartoon

Please Come Home For Christmas

Oh, another song I never cared for. The Eagles’ version is okay.

Santa Baby(I think this one’s going to be hot-pun intended)

Eartha Kitt’s version is miles better than any of the others

Others to add (I notice your list is purely secular; is that deliberate, or are religious carols welcome, too?):

  1. Elvis Presley - “Santa Claus Is Back in Town”

  2. Judy Garland - “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” (I much prefer the line about muddling through somehow to the one about hanging a star on the highest bough).

  3. Barenaked Ladies - “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”

  4. Harry Belafonte - “Mary’s Boy Child”

  5. Jim Croce - “It Doesn’t Have to Be That Way”

  6. Peter, Paul & Mary - “A Soaling”

  7. Jon (Yes) Anderson - “I Saw 3 Ships”

IMHO, nobody has ever outdone Brenda Lee on Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.

Probably, but that’s because I listen to metal. I’m not much of a fan on Christmas music as is. I’d tend to go with parodies and such as opposed to traditional covers.

*Baby It’s Cold Outside *- You can’t beat the Dean Martin version.
*Please Come Home For Christmas *- I’ve always been partial to the Aaron Neville version.
*Santa Baby *- call me a communist, but I still like Madonna’s version the best.

Communist.
edited to add: I’d pick the Chipmonk’s version over hers.

So much for the Hippocratic Oath…

This is in blatant violation of the rules of the thread, but I’m going to post this link anyway, because it’s a great version of O Holy Night that I like a lot.

Baby It’s Cold Outside: Blossom Dearie & Bob Dorough. He’s really trying to score. And you know, he just might.

OK, that might move ahead of the Louis Jordon version I mentioned earlier. This almost eclipses their work on Schoolhouse Rock.

Almost, but not quite.

Good one!

A small aside, though-you should try, whenever possible, to not post right after Smeghead.

Just sayin.

I remember hearing the Boney M Christmas album when I was a kid. I loved it, even as I was a couple years into enjoying music of the more hard rock/heavy metal persuasion.

I bought it for myself a few years ago and I’m glad I did. It is really well done, and although I tend toward even heavier metal nowadays, I love it, and recommend it highly to anyone who likes the classic caroles.

So far I’m leaning towards Eartha Kitt’s Santa Baby, and Jimmy Durante’s Frosty The Snowman(although The Roches came a damnclose 2nd).

Santa Claus is Coming to Town: the Jackson 5 and Bruce Springsteen versions, listed above, are both covers of the Phil Spector arrangement, sung by the … Crystals? Ronettes? doesn’t matter…on the absolutely fantastic album A Christmas Gift for You.

So, although Bruce is awesome, go for the original.

Anyone else interested in Christmassy metal songs, there is some group that has done a couple tributes.

This is my favourite Metallica song The Call of Ktulu, Christmas-style!
