Yep. Let justice be seen to be done, that’s what I always say. And keep an eye out for anyone acting strange when the prisoners are being moved. I can maybe do some sneaking around if we spot anyone who wants an eye keeping on them.
So at this point can we find some suitable and safe place to rest for the night?
Edith is pleased to offer the heroes a secure place to rest within the Temple of Heimdall.
She tells the party that one of Gisbourne’s lieutenants has asked to speak to her and:
- repeated the offer to guard the Kobolds in Oakham Castle under Gisbourne’s authority
- offered to put a special guard around the Temple to ‘protect the Kobolds’
- offered to escort the Kobolds anywhere Edith wants them to go
Edith states that she asked the lieutenant to convey her thanks to Sir Guy and replied that she would consider each of the points made and reply to Sir Guy by noon tomorrow.
She hopes the party approve of her delaying tactics.
No disrespect m’Lady. But I don’t know that they will work. Now I know I may not be the brightest candle, but if you told that to me, and I was Gisbourne, I would pick myself up and head over hear without a moments to spare.
I think we need to move, and move now. Again, with all due respect intended.
Sadly Fluiddruid is unable to continue as Erjg the lizardman Fighter.
I am happy to continue running the adventure with the remaining characters:
Cullen the Druid
Clever Hans the gnome Illusionist / Thief
Cadogan the Ranger
Salazar the MU
Aciryas the Cleric
As mentioned before, if anyone new would like to play, then they are welcome to choose from:
Gawain the Paladin
Hulfgar the Ocean Barbarian
Erjg the lizardman Fighter
All these above have an interesting and relevant back story, which is why I will not be offering new characters. Please feel free to ask me about each character before you choose one!
Players,
Once you have had a night’s rest you can wake at dawn and spend an hour memorising spells.
As usual, lease could all casters publish which spells they wish to load.
N.B. Cullen’s unused Goodberries expire each day, but there is no problem casting the spell each morning.
Cullen can load and cast Predict Weather to see if it is worth him loading Call Lightning. He can also load and cast the 1st level spell Identify, which will give full information on the two magic items captured by the party.
(Edith Weston can buy and sell a small range of magic items, as can both Sir Guy Gisbourne and Baron Thorgunby Wheldrake.)
The party also have a 500 gold piece gem, a suit of Giant-sized Chain Mail and 9 short swords.
Edith takes no offence.
“One of your duties, Aciryas, is to seek out those who would do evil and frustrate them.
I repeat my offer of hospitality, but if you and your loyal friends wish to leave with the Kobolds at dusk, then I will play my part by meeting with Sir Guy tomorrow and give him the impression that your party is still interrogating the Kobolds within my temple. I am sure Heimdall will forgive me this small indiscretion!
Remember that tomorrow is the County Fayre and that there are going to be many visitors - as well as the games sponsored by Baron Wheldrake in the afternoon.
Oh, and there are two allies resting just outside - Simon the peasant and young Jack Baker. I can have either or both brought in if you wish…”
Crumlin offers the party his knowledge of the Town and of the forest path to Uppingham (“I tend the shrine on that path, you know!”)
Assuming we stay the night and don’t set out…
Spells: 6 x 1st, 4 x 2nd, 3 x 3rd
1st: Detect Magic, Entangle2, Predict Weather, Speak Animal, Identify
2nd: Cure Light Wounds, Goodberry2, Heat Metal
3rd: Neutralise Poison, Stone Shape, Summon Insects
As it will only take 2 hours to walk there and an hour to ride back, I suggest we just plan to leave at first light and make haste. I can do the ID before we leave by candle light.
Hmmm…we might be alright if we leave before/near dawn. Let’s make sure we tak every precaution to keep everone safe through the night. I may be over paranoid, bur knowing that Sir Guy is both evil and crafty gives me cause to worry.
Is there anyone we can leave behind in town to gather information for us at the fair? Perhaps one of the baker boys? The older boy seems smart enough to gather the needed informtion and still be able to meet us the next day.
Maybe I am over thinking things.
What does the rest of the group think?
I don’t know- leaving at dawn allows us the best chance of avoiding Guisborne’s men, true, but they can’t afford to be seen attacking us. We might actually be better off doing it in the late morning, when the roads will be crowded with people coming to the fair.
I may be out of contact for a day or two- if necessary, play Cadogan in character for me.
Crumlin is pleased that the party are discussing different options:
- leave at dusk and find somewhere to hide overnight
- rise before dawn, load spells and leave at dawn
- leave in the morning
Cullen, The Temple can certainly provide either candlelight or the spell Light to help casters Identify and memorise spells e.g. an hour before dawn, thus allowing the party to make an dawn start if desired.
Crumlin certainly doesn’t think Aciryas is paranoid - our evil opponents were willing to kidnap an innocent boy in broad daylight and have him sacrificed just to stop Crumlin standing in an election. Clearly they will stop at nothing.
Cadogan, Crumlin agrees that Gisbourne’s men can’t afford to attack the heroes in daylight. Nevertheless we know they have a Magic User working for them (the use of Crystal Ball, Message, Magic Mouth etc), which means that 3 Kobolds could be assassinated on the street in a single round - without any proof Gisbourne was involved.
N.B. I am away this weekend - playing D+D face-to-face.
Crumlin adds (slightly nervously) that he does have another option for the party to consider.
Since the Kobolds may well be in mortal danger if they appear on the streets looking to identify the three kidnappers, Crumlin does have a way to disguise both them and some of the party - a Morris Dancing troupe!
Because of the colourful costumes, hats with ribbons etc, there must be a good chance that nobody will spot who is leaping about.
Perhaps those in leather armour would like to join in, leaving those in metal armour to keep any nosy spectators at a distance. There is even a special Morris Dance character, the Fool, as well.
Crumlin explains that he coaches the Oakham Morris Dancing troupe and that he can certainly teach a few basic steps even to complete beginners.
In the crowds of the County Fayre, a Morris Dancing Troupe would not stand out. There will be all sorts of other costumes on the day, together with other Morris Dancers…
Cullen likes Crumlin’s risky but creative idea. I will volunteer to help a be one of the dancers if you think it would help. I just hope we can soon decide and get to sleep and begin whatever tomorrows activities will be.
I still harbor some hopes of competing in the Falconry contest tomorrow.
"I am … concerned that waiting too long might enable a certain person to set an … ambush for us. Consequently I do not … want to leave as late as tomorrow morning. I suspect … that swift movement may be our best bet.
"I am against any attempt to … disguise the Kobolds when we move them. I sincerely believe that if it is … discovered … we may find ourselves accused of …being in league with the evil creatures. Even … arranging for the kidnap ourselves so we can … buy kudos for “rescuing” the boy.
"No, if moving the kobolds. they must be, and be … seen to be, prisoners.
"The best option may be leaving now. If that is impractical, then taking the minimum time to … rememorise spells and ride out in the … dark, or before the full light of dawn.
“Perhaps then we can return in time for you to … participate in the falconry, Cullen.”
Crumlin appreciates Salazar’s intent that justice be seen to be done. However the trial did take place in public and Edith Weston has taken full responsibility for keeping the Kobolds in custody, while keeping them safe to testify in a future trial.
The party have come up with three possibilities and Crumlin would appreciate a party vote for which one to do:
-
leave the Temple now under cover of dusk and hide in town, resting to recover spells. (Crumlin says Much the Miller is totally reliable and discreet. His barn is not far away and can hold everyone.)
The party then load spells tomorrow early (by candlelight) and leave early to hand over the Kobolds to Baron Wheldrake in Uppingham -
rest in the Temple, load spells tomorrow early (by candlelight) and leave early to hand over the Kobolds to Baron Wheldrake in Uppingham
-
rest in the Temple, load spells tomorrow and leave during the morning to publically hand over the Kobolds to Baron Wheldrake in Uppingham
P.S. Sorry about the delay - I was ill for a week** and ** had my Broadband service collapse.
All hopefully back to normal now!
