Ulf:
That is certainly true. **And ** he could protect the other spellcaster.
Of course a Berserker would have more hit points (and a caster can’t use spells in Owlbear form.)
On balance I think Osvald should get the Amulet, mainly because Ivar’s Cures are so important.
DM, can a Berserker use his Rage and the Owlbear Amulet simultaneously?
And can the wearer persuade an Owlbear that the wearer’s party are not to be attacked?
Ulf agrees with both Ivar and Osvald that the party should go back to the cave and specifically check the Owlbear that was wearing the amulet.
He adds that we should go to a big town soon to sell Owlbear cubs and eggs - apparently they are valuable!
Oh, and in the morning, Ivar will get everyone all healed up, unless we can find some townspeople who are willing to do that for free or inexpensively.
If decent weapons can be had in Woolverton or Pevensey, Ivar would like to pick up a decent belt knife- maybe four to six inches, enough to be useful in close quarters, skin game, carve wood, and the like. Mostly non-combat stuff. But if we’d do better to wait for a wealthier place or a place known for metalsmithing, I’ll wait.
we have 250 gold, plus the Amulet, pkus anything we get for the Owlbears to divide up. There are 5 original Vikings with Bjarni (1 share each), and Henrik + Redbeard together is 1 more share.
sometime we should look into the missing Wizard, as well as the strange light.
You’ll all be cured up by the morning, as mentioned above. A belt knife is easily had for a piece of gold, and comes with its own leather scabbard. Do you therefore wish to:
continue investigating now
travel to Hamwic, dispose of the cubs, and come back soon
DM, Right, we’re all cured up - so presumably Ivar has used all his Cure spells for today?
Ulf checks that the party is happy for Osvald to wear the Owlbear Amulet. (Although the Berserkers or Bjarni could use it, this way gives everyone in the party decent fighting skills. Of course Osvald will have to wait for another bit of magic treasure!)
Can Osvald ask the cubs if they remember anything about the previous wearer?
Did he shapechange? Did he say anything to the adults? Who built the platform?
Ulf votes to go straight back to the cave, because the previous owner’s body should be there and the magic may have worn off. And eventually wild animals will eat the evidence!
Depending on what we find, we can then investigate the light, look for the Wizard or go to Hamwic.
We should sell the cubs (because they’ll grow into a threat) as soon as the mystery of the previous owner is dealt with.
No more curing was needed. The local priest obliged with a Cure Light all round and natural healing with the aid of proper care dealt with the rest.
The cubs are very babyish and hence uninformative even by dumb-animal standards, but they are a little confused as to where their “other hairless friend” went, also where their big brothers and sisters are. I’ll wait for the rest of the party input before I move the story on.
I agree that we should go back to the cave and figure out who the amulet wearer was. We really should have been suspicious of the amulet wearing owlbear from the start :smack:
After that, I’m open to anything. We need to get the owlbears to their destination; and we also need to check out that lighted place. I think it makes sense to drop off the owlbears first. But we can make that decision after we visit the cave for more investigation.
I suppose Osvald will take the amulet of Owlbearness. Any chance I can talk to other things related to Owls or Bears?
As for the Cubs, Osvald will try to explain that these owlbears have been chosen to become special owlbears by their siblings. So they will now be living with the hairless ones to have a happy and better life than their siblings could provide.
Or if the language is too complicated: “Owlies now live with us hairless ones. Hairless ones will feed you and love you and care for you. Just let friend Osvald know if anything is wrong.”
Okay. Guern is willing to guide you for a silver piece a day on the clear understanding that he will not get involved in any fights. Since you’re taking on the mission for the good of Woolverton, you get a free feed before you go and a packed lunch.
You are able to return to the owlbear cave without incident. It’s a little smellier than before but not too high just yet, and the local carrion-eaters have not yet made much impact on the bodies, which are very big, very hairy, and not decayed enough to be easy to eat. All of the bodies are still owlbear shaped.
Hamsters ate my post… You get back to the cave without incident. Hamilka, Guern’s dog, is a good tracker if you can find a trail to put him to. The cave is all natural limestone cave as far as you can tell. Osvald is pretty sure which was the owlbear the amulet came off, and it (and all the others) are still owlbear shaped. Carrion eaters haven’t disturbed the site much yet, the bodies are still too fresh though they are beginning to smell.
The eggs just seem to have been left on the rush-strewn floor - that’s where you found the intact eggs and that’s where the shell fragments are. If a man had wanted to accustom the young to his presence, the wooden platform might have done to sleep on if he didn’t mind a little discomfort, and that’s where you found all the human accoutrements, such as they were.
Guern stays outside. He expects a silver piece per day and the understanding that he will run if there is a fight he doesn’t like the look of. He stays outside while you’re in the cave, having a good look around.
Ulf: Could Hamilka track where the Owlbear (who had the Amulet) came from?
Anybody got any spells that might reveal something? (Detect Magic? Speak to Animals - if there are any living outside?)
It was well worth coming back here, but unless we think of something, we next have to decide whether to look for the ‘light’ / Wizard, or sell Owlbears.
Ulf would like to sell first - we might raise enough money to buy a magic item ; we also learn about Owlbears (so Osvald can decide whether to keep one  ); we don’t have to nurse the young.
