I know this is New Years Eve and all, but maybe someone online can help me?
(And yes, I’ve checked the D-link homepage)
I can’t access the interface of my new D-Link router (DI-524) in the usual way (typing http:/ /192.168.0.1). I only get a blank IE page. I tried to ping it and it seems the command prompt can recognize it, but I only get four replies back about request being timed out.
I’ve tried both with a tp cable and wireless, with and without firewall and have re-booted both computer and router numerous times.
How about 192.168.1.1 ? If that fails:
If you are willing to do it, I would recommend downloading an alternate browser like Firefox and trying it that way. Actually, I would do that for other reasons but that isn’t important right now. The download and installation are very fast. It is good to have an alternate browser anyway.
If 192.168.1.1 doesn’t work, try this: At the command prompt, type ipconfig. See if there’s another IP address listed under “Default Gateway”; if so, try that instead.
Failing that, also try a hard reset on your router. There should be a little hole thing in the back that you can stick a paper clip into.
Do you have pop ups blocked ? On mine a small pop up , pops up and asks for admin and password before going to the menu screen.
Declan
That’s what you’d expect to see if you ping an address with nobody at the other end.
You have the right IP address for an out-of-the-box DI-524, but something for sure isn’t right. Both suggestions (alternate browser, and checking the actual gateway IP address) are good ones.
Do you have another PC somewhere that you can use?
One other thing that just occured to me: if your currently assigned IP/netmask doesn’t include 192.168.0.1, then you’re unlikely to be able to access it. Make sure your PC is set up for DHCP, and then have just the PC and router connected, and nothing else.
Have you managed to access it this way before?
Have you changed any of the settings on it when you accessed before?
If the answer to either of the above is no, then you need to go back to the set-up manual and start again from scratch. Read what it says carefully about the IP setup on your computer. If this isn’t configured correctly then you’ll never establish any contact with the router.
If the answer to the second question is yes, I’d suggest a reset back to the default config and starting again, as above.
The response you’re getting from your pings are not from the router. They’re your computer saying it’s giving up on trying to find it after four attempts.
My D-Link (not the same model) does not work with Firefox. The part that saves the settings only functions correctly with IE. Took me an entire day to work that one out.
Checking your rear cabling. Make sure cable modem goes to WAN port.
Also try stealing the cable modem ethernet cable for a moment and use it for the PC to router connection port connection. If it’s a defective cable problem you should be able to access the router.
Press the reset button (or whatever is used to reset your unit) to set all router settngs to defaut.
Thanks everyone. Good suggestions but problem was solved. It was my ISP that had screwed up.
Everything works like a charm right now.
Moving to a new apt around Christmas+New Year= bad idea. Support is down or very understaffed at the same time as a lot of people have vacation and fiddle with their computers.
Anyway - thanks for the effort.
