Remember, this myth pertains only to the spider, not the animal also known as the Harvestman. The Harvestman’s body only consists of one segment and it does not spin a web.
The DLL spider has a body consisting of two segments, like all spiders, and does spin webs. Like the Harvestman, it has extremely long legs that seem to have the thickness of a human hair.
But the Mythbusters captured several of the spiders and put them in a container that allowed Adam to insert his arm for the spiders to attack. They did manage to bite him (another part of the myth busted) and he suffered no ill effects besides a few red marks on his arm.
Left unexplained is how this myth was started, but it was probably someone’s idea of a joke.
