Daily Pick-Me-Up: What Made You Smile Today?

After waiting for 8 and a half years, I’m finally getting my bathroom remodeled! And so far the workers have been competent, clean, on time and on budget!

Yeah!

I learned this weekend that in the past 7 months I’ve lost 42 pounds.

Quite simply, the sun.

I got hugged by one of my Meals on Wheels clients that had never done that before. I was so sweet-struck.

OMG Puppy-cam! Squee!

So, in late September or early October I found pansies on sale. The ones I’d planted in the spring drown (it rained in NH more than 50% of days last summer. True fact, I checked it with NOAA) and I’d really wanted pansies. So I bought a whole bunch figuring that they’d be around for a month or two. The guy who sold them to me said they might survive the winter, which seemed silly. Until the snow all melted. Most of the flowers looked wilted, but one was all yellow and fluffed up.

Then we had flooding three weeks in a row, and my fluffy yellow pansy disappeared from view. Oh well, it was nice for it to have survived the winter at all.

Today I got home and was startled: not only is fluffy yellow still there, a bunch of the wilted looking ones have perked up too!! I can’t believe I have pansies blooming in April. It’s wonderful.

Nothing makes me happier than squeezing my little grandbabyboy and watching him chuckle like a maniac in response.

Y’know, I mostly wake up in a BLAH mood, and sometimes in a particularly foul mood, and even after caffeine I’m only somewhat mellowed out. Woe and betide anybody who gives me ‘grief’ in those early hours et.

But give me 30 seconds with my 6 month old little fella, and I’m the happiest old crone in the whole wide world. This kid, I swear is the most greatest little guy in the universe! He makes me smile lots, AND he even makes his mum a happy girl which cheers me up no end TOO.

Today little Zen had to go for a loooong car ride. We were hoping he would sleep the whole way, but he decided to sing along with the car-radio instead. Have you ever had the pleasure of listening to a baby singing? Not that they keep up with the tune or the tempo or anything, but IT’S JUST A FUCKING AMAZINGLY WONDERFUL THING. The most wondrous listening experience in the whole wide world I reckon.

Next time you’re within proximity of a little kid…start singing to them and try to get them to sing back atcha. You won’t be disappointed, I guarantee.

i’m loving this thread - thanks everyone for your responses!

Mickey D’s lunch in the park on a beautiful day with my wife and daughter. Fed the ducks with the young 'un. Just perfect.

I got you beat – after FIFTY-FOUR years, I’m finally getting my bathroom remodeled!

I have a job interview next Tuesday.

I have not had a day job for over 13 years, earning a living as a musician. Things have slowed down so much, it’s time for a day job. If this works out, I will be working 2 blocks from my home, doing work similar to stuff I’ve done in the past. Not great wages, but good benefits, and I will be able to keep most of my musical gigs intact

Good luck to me!
David

Good luck to you indeed!!

My daughter plays for Antigua & Barbuda Womens Football and they are through to the next round of the Concacaf Gold Cup. Smiling? I’ve been jumping up and down.

Cuba here we come! They’ll be playing Cuba, Puerto Rico & Haiti in May. No way I can afford to go though.

My baby girl gave me this huge, drippy grin, pulled her drool-covered fingers out of her mouth and reached out to grab me by the cheeks. Then she pulled me to her, opened her mouth wide…and started sucking on my nose. Then she pulled back, gave me an enormous, drooly grin and did it again after I laughed.

All semester I’ve been working on a required social change project within my field placement agency (for my M.S.W. program.) It’s been really stressful and scary to plan this and today was the big day… I designed and implemented an Anti-Racism Training Seminar for the administrative staff in my agency.

I totally rocked it!!! People came up to me and told me they’d learned things and began to think in ways that they had never thought before. It might not seem like a big deal to others, but this took so much courage and assertiveness to pull off… in the beginning they weren’t even going to let me do it. I really had to fight to make this happen. For me this is a symbol of tremendous personal and professional growth.

And made me smile.

The “dead” rhubarb in an area that I had covered in a layer of newspapers (to keep weeds down, then bark mulch will go over top) turned out to be not dead at all. One leafy stalk had found its way to the light. I took off the newspapers and there are three robust rhubarb plants growing! I’m going to have rhubarb this summer! They seemed really happy to be uncovered, too.

I need a Dixie cup with sugar in it, and I will dip my stalks into the sugar and gnaw happily.

The little boy (16 months old) I take care of grabbed me around the head and gave me a smooch. Also, there’s a parakeet named Scout perched on my head.

There’s a waitress at one of my regular haunts who always has a smile and a hug for me. She’s cute, too, which is nice. Probably too young for me though. But the other day I was feeling down and got up to use the restroom, and when I got back to my seat at the bar she had drawn a smiley face on a napkin with “you’re fantastic” written below it and put it on my table.

Sounds like you need to write “So are you” on another napkin and leave it for her!

We have a birthday in my office today, and I have just a few crumbs left from a piece of pineapple upside down cake on the plate on my desk.

YUM!
