Daily Show 12/5

So how do we think Stewart faired with Jimmy Carter? I felt he spent most of his time doing what he does to all prominent Dems that come on the show, which is baiting them to say something nasty about the currant administration. Like a former president is going to fall for that.
Then of course Carter gave the obligatory old person comment of “My kids/grandkids were very excited for me to come on this show” to get a cheap pop from the audience. And why the heck was he sitting on his hands the whole time? Does he have some kind of condition he’s hiding?
It seems that the interviews this year have peaked with Kurt Vonnegut and kind of gone down hill from there.

I think Jimmy Carter is one of the smartest, kindest, most genuinely “good” guys around. It’s refreshing to see that he’s still actively in the game at his age. Good guest choice on Stuart’s part if you ask me.

Where in Schaumburg do you live? I used to live there!

No kidding? Corner of Golf and Plum Grove at the Versailles on the Lakes apartment complex.

I used to work right over there on Woodfield Road (went to a party once at those apartments).

I used to live at Golf and Barrington in those apartments over there. I forget what they’re called now, as I lived there back when the earth was just beginning to cool.

Fared; current.

I thought he did fine. President Carter’s really showing his age more these past couple of years, though it doesn’t seem to have slowed him down.

Who was sitting on whose hands?

I saw President Carter’s hands at all times.

I liked the interview–JS was respectful and admiring and warm.

What were you expecting?
I think that querying past Presidents on the current one is derigeur for all who share that title. Why wouldn’t it be put to Carter or Ford or whoever?

Sometimes TDS is uneven, but I consistently find it amusing and well informed, which is lightyears ahead of most other TV offerings. I don’t expect wicked satire every time. Heck, JS has gone easy on alot of guests that I hoped he would eviscerate.

YMMV.

I don’t know how much depth one can reasonably expect from a seven-minute interview segment on a comedy show. I thought Stewart asked some good softball questions and Carter gave some good softball answers, I liked the line about how Carter works harder than the man actually occupying the Oval Office (it’s funny 'cause it’s true), and overall the interview was about on par for what TDS normally puts out.

Jimmy Carter was more interesting in a longer form interview on NOW on PBS. You can probably see it on the PBS site. David Brancacchio didn’t need to be funny, so he could ask intelligent questions.

Carter had a fairly lackluster term in the White House, but since then has outshone several secretaries of state. He has more strength of character and moral fiber than most of today’s politicos.

What was that think Jack Valenti said during the TV indency hearings- “gallop onto the Internet?”
