Daily Show 7/13/05

He included Michael Savage but not Ann Coulter?

One thing I will give Goldberg credit for, he took it pretty well. He argued with Stewart, but he seemed to laugh about it and was pretty polite.

I was amused when he said “Well, what about The Bigot Channel? They can have a network for the KKK, and blah blah blah.” Hey, why not? Let them make their own channel, so we can keep an eye on them?

Perfection. That is why I love Stewart.

Same here, and I live in Alabama. Anyway Jon’s point wasn’t to slam Alabama, but to say that the Chief Justice of Alabama isn’t such a powerful position compared to, oh I don’t know, someone in the White House??

His original point wasn’t to slam Alabama, but the second part of the joke left little room for interpretation.

The set is atrocious, when Stewart said that we’d hate it, he wasn’t kidding. Still, it seems that Stewart’s gotten a little more biting with new set. Wonder if TDS will ever be the first news outlet to break a story?

#53 Anna Nicole Smith
#85 The Dumb Celebrity

Wow. Anna made the list twice.

…and I loved how on Thursday everything was much mellower, and Jon acknowledged the viewers’ consensus. “I’m bliiiiiiiiind!

Heh. Brought back a flashback of the retinal scarring I suffered the night Connie Chung Tonight debuted on CNN. Now that was an ugly set.

(The orange one, I mean. The one she walks around with is actually pretty nice.)

He has been very vocal on how much he hates the “crawl” on CNN, so I don’t doubt he told then to tone down the graphics a bit.

I loved this episode. As somone was in Tampa during Hurricane Dennis I can relate to Colbert’s piece. My family were over from Ireland (we rented a house south of Tampa) and as we watched the news my sister noted that the journalists were just short of wishing the hurricane hit Tampa and wiped us all out. Such sensationalist nonsense! I was deligted to see the Daily Show spoof it so well.

As for Goldberg, well his book Bias really isn’t that bad. His current book though seems utterly worthless. I thought Stewart went through him like a knife through butter. I do agree though that he should try and apply the same standard to left-leaning guests.

In a way they already have- John Edwards first announced he was running for the presidency on TDS. Also, while they certainly didn’t break the Karl Rove/Douchebag of Liberty/Plame story, they’ve done more than most “legitimate” news shows in keeping it in the public radar. Bob Issikoff (sp?), a Newsweek columnist and one of the leading authorities on that particular story, said (and he wasn’t joking) that Stewart’s synopsis of the story the night before from Novak’s column to that day’s McLellan press conference was the best he’d seen on any network.

I’d cite but unfortunately I’m visiting my mother and I’m on her really slow speed computer at the moment, but a couple of years ago there was a poll and study of political literacy of Americans as related to their favorite news shows. Those who listed Daily Show as a favorite news source, even though it’s a comedy program and makes no pretenses to be more, ranked HIGHEST of anybody in the poll on average. (Those who ranked Fox as their favorite news source- surprise surprise- ranked lowest [most believed that WMDs had been found in Iraq, among other things.)

I think that this was when Stewart and TDS really began to get attention from “legitimate” press sources.

Back to the OP, did anybody notice that Goldberg listed Begala (who few people could pick out of a police line-up) as one of the 100 Most Damaging, but gave a free pass to Tucker “Bowtie Dick” Carlson. (I loathe Carlson so much that I won’t buy Swanson products because he’s one of the Swanson heirs.)

Barbara Kingsolver? Barbara Kingsolver?
God Og, why?

And can someone tell me what the Alabama joke was? I can’t remember it.

Actually, it’s for far more than just the self-satisfaction of right-wingers. It’s part of the ongoing public campaign to fix in the general public’s mind that liberals are bad and un-American.

I’m watching a repeat of the 7/13 episode right now, and just remembered another part that made me laugh out loud (I just laughed out loud again): Jon Stewart points out the paucity of conservatives in Goldberg’s book, Goldberg says, “You have a good point,” and Stewart – in genuine surprise – says, “Really?”

HA!
