Daily Show 8/15

I had the pleasure of interviewing Stephen Colbert today, so maybe I can clear this up a little. The Colbert Réport premiers on October 17, at which point it’s farewell, Daily Show. I think the deal with Carolla’s show is that they’ll both do some dates - I think The Colbert Réport will only be four days a week, too. It will be a parody of pundit shows such as The O’Reilly Factor, Scarborough Country, Hannity and Colmes, and the like. A lot of the exact details of the format are still being worked out, but it’ll be taped live like The Daily Show - in the old TDS studio, actually - and it will have serious guests in addition to the comedy. It’ll be a little less tied to the daily news cycle, so they’ll be able to stretch out a little in that sense even though they’ll still be doing the news.

For Colbert, that is. I don’t want to start some other rumor.

Just to confirm what I thought, the Colbert Réport will indeed be Monday - Thursday.

So it’ll be a power hour of media mockery Monday through Thursday? That’s worth getting a cable hookup for.

Marley23, will Colbert parody a different show each week? Or will it be a synthesis of them? If he’s is going to parody individual pundit shows, I’d like to see him do Pat Robinson’s 700 Club at least once and McLaughlin’s Group too.

It’ll be a synthesis. It’s more character based than TDS, with “Colbert” having a bombastic personality and personal scandals, a la O’Reilly.

Right, it’s a synthesis. Those were just some of the names he tossed out for comparison; he also mentioned Aaron Brown and said they might sometimes do “themed weeks” a la Lou Dobbs. Shows that are (to paraphrase what he said) less about the news than about somebody’s take on the news.

No, it was that whole bizarre Prince Charles/gay scandal thing a few years back where a British judge had barred the press from actually talking about any of the details.
