I think what we all learned is that… Cecil is human! And he has opinions, and, like all of us mere mortals, has a desire to express them from time to time while at “work”.
Oh, the horror!! The shame!! :o
Keep it up, Unca Cece!
(btw, I’m pro-war and pro-Bush doctrine. But still, this entire “debate” is silly.)
Thank you!
It was a cheap shot and just plain wrong of Cecil to tack that on to the end of his article. The man has fallen down several notches in my book today.
Your a fool if you belive either of those have anything to do with being a conservative.
Cecil should edit out the last sentance. I hope his pride doesn’t get in the way of doing the right thing.
Damn I’d really thought you gotten the point. Not only did joe six-pack not realize that Saddam had somehow provked the United States, neither did anyone else, including Saddam himself, the UN and judging by all his statements pre 9/11 neither did George W Bush. the attack on the U.S.S. Cole has Al Qaeda fingerprints all over it and we all know if there was real evidence connecting Saddam and Al Qaeda We’d of heard of it by now.
Why on earth should he edit it out? Thats worse then demanding an apology. The very idea of pretending it never existed. I’ve read plenty of editorials that have made me mad but I’d never demand that an opinion should be hidden. when exactly did people being offended become a price to high to bear for free speech.
I still say the last line was a joke.
No, that would be a bad idea.
He should apologize, not for his views, but that he let them color his article for the first time and just tacked on that comment at then end. It was cheap and beneath him.
I dont really give a rat’s ass about anyone’s opinion on the war; BUT … now is the time to support our troops, not tear them down. Like it or hate it, we are at war and that war is about to be won. There are Americans dying to make that happen. They (and their families) do not need or want your lucid, well thought out, elitest opinions.
Do you really think that anything factual he said was tainted by his views? Or that people reading the article will mistake that last paragraph for fact and not opinion?
so by this logic if I lived in Nazi Germany, I shouldnt say anything bad about the fuherer, cause my neighbours got a son at the front?
Before anyone jumps on me for saying I called W was the same as Hitler , I’d just like to clarify that was not my point, only that a country that embraces the silencing of opinion as a virtue is headed down a dark path.
What, pray, does “conservativism” mean in your country? Because they are damn well part of the conservative agenda in the United States.
Libertarianism with morality.
Since Cecil has opened the subject with the “damn fool war” comment, and since I respect Cecil’s opinion, I for one would honestly like to know exactly why he thinks that.
I’ve heard all the pro- and anti-war arguments. I’m not interested in anyone else’s statements at this time.
Cecil, I respectfully request your presentation of the justification for that statement.
I do not know what exactly Cecil might have meant with “damn fool war”.
Perhaps it was an objection in general to war.
Perhaps it was an opinion about the legitimacy of the war, considering that there was no explicit UN resolution on the use of military force.
Perhaps it was the (apparent) lack of post-war planning.
Perhaps it is the cost of rebuilding Iraq (now estimated at $1,000b)
As for WMD, there have been no confirmed sites… so far.
While I am very glad no WMDs were used against coalition forces, the fact that no WMDs were used calls to question the charge that Iraq had WMDs.
Amidst all the hype and cheering, the question for me is still this:
Where are the weapons of mass destruction that GWB insisted was the justification for war? Perhaps they are still to be found. Perhaps there were none to be found in the first place.
GWB will want to paint this as a war of liberation. Yet, it was initiated as a war of disarmament - a war to pre-empt terrorist attacks on the US or the world at large.
Sure, Saddam lies everytime he opens his mouth. But the hawks were not above lying (or not caring too much for the truth) to try to convince the UN to sanction this war.
While I am glad the losses to the coalition forces were minimal, and that the war is almost over, it does not mean that all’s well that ends well. The end does not justify the means. The case for war cannot be reduced to simply the probability of success or failure.
A damn fool war would still be a damn fool war, even if you win without a single loss of life to your troops.
And, I second the motion by rowrrbazzle for Cecil to give his reasons for why he thinks it is a damn fool war.
Don’t mind me, I’m just enjoying watching the war hawks go into a tizzy as they try to handwave away Cecil’s denunciation of this damn fool war.
Bull. How did his opinion “color” the article? Are you calling his facts into question? I’d like to see your information if you are. It sounds to me that people are all upset that the column has “lost its objectivity” simply because the writer has an opinion they don’t agree with. And that’s just pathetic.
This column has always been opinionated. That’s why it’s as entertaining as it is educational. Cecil doesn’t just provide counter-arguments to flat-earthers, or militant environmentalists, or whatever other agenda is trying to manipulate the facts in question – he frequently throws in a mention of how the relevant parties are boneheads. And that’s completely his perogative. If this were a news story in which the writer referred to the “damn fool war,” that would violate the rules of journalistic integrity and this bonehead thread would be justified. But it’s not, it’s a column.
So again, if anyone can refute the facts presented in the column, feel free to do so. (For all I know, some of you have already tried – I can’t read through this entire thread because my eyes hurt from all the rolling.) But if you’re just complaining because Cecil has expressed his opinion, my only response is: get the hell over yourself.
Oh, and so you are saying its perfectly OK for the kings in the USA (i.e.: CEOs) to build empires at the expense of all the millions of unsuspecting Americans who invest in good faith in the stock market…gambling with our retirement and infrastructure of the USA economy…and go unpunished? Why, Mr. Bush himself knows he should be hanging right beside Mr. Enron, Mr. Worldcom, and all the silent names who got away playing the same game! It’s an old game called “Who got their hands caught stealing from the cookie jar?” (But, before we hang him, can we get Mr. Exxon, Mr. Chevron, et al out of his back pocket before he destroys Alaska?)
Yes, Thank God Mr. SilverSpoon Bush is here to save us all! Thank God he’s making the world safe for OUR democrazy (sic) while destroying our own in the process! When will you bleeding heart conservatives stop it? Like you really give a rats ass about the poor Iraqi lives…give me a break! And go tell richboy Bush to go serve out his military committment like a decent American citizen!
Thank you Mr. Bush et al for making America unsafe for the American worker just trying to make an HONEST LIVING while crawling on our bellies to kick the asses of the rich just to save something for a hope of a future. - Jinx
P.S. Oh, Mr. Bush…can you define “integrity” for us?
As a means of protesting Cecil’s lack of patriotism I would like to propose a moratorium on fellatio. After all, it is called “frenching” you know. And I think it’s important that we set the right example for our children who should be made fully aware of our sacrifice.
