It’s not quite an adult version, and it’s definitely not quite the kid’s show.
Does anybody else love the original “Pee Wee’s Playhouse” HBO special besides me? IIRC, it was the comedy troupe The Groundlings that did it, and it’s just the funniest thing ever. I really, really wish Paul Reubens would forgo the idea of doing another Pee Wee movie in favor of taking this on the road as a stage show.
Ohhhh, man! Is that the one with the shoe-mirrors and Miss Yvonne drawing on her eyebrows and Jambi with his new hands? “I’ve got something I’ve wanted to do with these for a looong time.”
I remember seeing that when I was too young to get most of the jokes, and then seeing it again once I’d … matured … and thinking it was one of the funniest things I’d ever seen. I used to have it on tape somewhere … now I’ll have to look for it.
I don’t remember if it was the Groundlings, but I do recall that Phil Hartman played Captain Carl.
“I just flew in from the ship, and man, are my wings tired.” Terry, the Pterodactyl
This adult version of PeeWee’s Playhouse is one of the funniest tapes I have. BUT, if you want to see something truly, outrageously funny, catch John Paragon’s[he plays Jambi on PeeWee’s Playhouse] one hour comedy special. From lounge singer to Richard Burton to a young stoner[“Hello Ray!”] to a foodholic, and many other characters besides, he is one funny, funny guy. One of the skits has Paul Reubens[not playing PeeWee this time] in it. Edie McClurg does an hysterical Ann Landers as well.
Mephisto’s Trapezoid !!!
Geez I sure remember that HBO special - and it was damned funny. I think that was first aired around 1981.
I’m sure we can type all kinds of quotes from that show for hours.
I’ll just bring up one more skit: Dr Mondo (Pee-Wee) hypnotizing a ‘volunteer’ from the audience.
I watched the hell out of that special. I still quote it without even realizing I’m doing it; if somebody recognizes the quote they get an instant 1000 street cred points with me.
Here’s a letter from Israel!
Shalom, Pee-Wee! My name is Shalomo. I am nine and have been in the army for two years already. If you want to know more about my country, just read The Bible!
