Damn Newbies over @ GD

Awwrrr, shucks…

-25th post! Only 25 more to go to overcome

Woohoo!

<…staggers away with big head, gleefully looking forward to debating with the Great Ones…>

Daniel-

Thanks for not taking my post personally. I am all for stamping out ignorance, forcefully where necessary.

I agree with you on the beef debate, as far as that goes. My personal view is that beef production is less of a burden on land than crop production (which of course often involves intensive use of fertilizers and pesticides, and can also lead to erosion, or loss of topsoil nutrients). Cows at least return some “fertilizer” to the soil.

And as for trolls (as opposed to newbies), they must be destroyed by any means available.

Spoke: and I was not considering land like yours which is “rotated”. A lot of really nice crop land is grazed on “off” years, this has been shown to be better than leaving it fallow, even good for the environment. There was a Supreme Court dec on grazing land just a couple of days ago.

Looks like I made a newbies day, or more likely hour. you know, rather than slamming them, I agree that showing them is better. But, positive reinforcement may work wonders too. So, for all those “long established posters” I issue a request & a challenge. Don’t like ignorant newbies or baby trolls? Rather than slamming them, try praising them when they “done good”. It may not be as nice as a personal note from Cecil, but it seems to help. Of course, some trolls are just that, and are unredeemable, but most of those are reincarnated. Just don’t feed those.

I am getting somewhat frightened that I may have to get “permission” to post in different places. I mean, I am definatly not a great poster, but I do like to post, and I do not think that I would be promoted to such places as The Pitt and elsewhere…or, was that a joke?

ROSE: You can post anywhere you damn well want. My 1st posts were inGD. But, 2 things to watch out for. 1. There are odd rules & ways of doing things. People cannot hear your tone of voice, so it is hard to tell when you are joking or sarcastic (try smilies, they look stupid, but they help). I got zapped for that, in my early days. Be careful of anything that might be considered a personal attack. Until you REALLY know your way around, don’t do it. If you are attacked, don’t counterattack. Just post a questioning thread here in the Pit (eg, “I don’t understand why XXX says such terrible things about me”), and either someone will explain, OR some of the “white knights” here will ride to your rescue & flame the guy better than you could ever hope to.

  1. In GD, if it simply an opinion item, go ahead, but don’t repeat, and read the thread 1st. But, if you say “becuase of fact “X”; I say opinion “Y””-- you had better back up fact “X” or they will rip you to shreds, or worse, ignore you. This rule does not apply as much in MPSIMS, ie you can say why you love a movie or book, usu w/o cites.

Read this entire thread, it has good advice from many.

So, no, you need no “permission”, but in some you must be more careful than others. And post more. Surely you have an opinion on adozen things in MPSIMS. Speak out. Try a couple in GD, on the items which are mostly just opinion, and not too heated. If you have a specific area of knowlegde, answer ??? in gen ?. Or ask one.

I dunno, as much of a pain in the ass newbies can be sometimes, a friend of mine once commented that if it weren’t for the people we didn’t like, what would we have to talk about?

Is this the thread Danielinthewolvesden is talking about with reference to Alphagene? There are only a couple, but seem even less related.

7 of 7 No, it’s not this one. It’s the locked one at the bottom of the page (DintheWD you have a funny name).

As a rule, be very wary of opening (ie posting to) threads that are not on the first few pages, particularly here in the pit. Some people might think (rightly or wrongly) that you’re trying to make trouble.

Yes, I was wondering why the Hell someone restarted this, but now I understand. However, newbies could do worse than read this and follow some of the suggestions we came up with, so it’s not a BAD thing.

I was going to note the opposite, that newbies often seem to be handling themselves better than the old timers.
There’s really no need to be so cliquish. It takes all kinds to fill the freeway.

Oh, absolutely, we need you 'newbies", as without you it would just be us old farts argueing and flaming each other.
But it still could not hurt to listen to a bit of advice, if you are new around here. I wish I had some, back 'then".

Hey hey hey. I don’t care why this thread reappeared, but let me tell you I nearly peed myself when I saw that johnnyharvard shit. I’m all flushed now, all hot. Damn! Piss me off!

Anyway, I have a few things to say because this subject pisses me off as well. Newbies are what make this exciting. If it was all the old-timers talking about the same old, frankly, I would be bored shitless. Why does everyone assume newbies have nothing to contribute?

Also, DITWD, I don’t know what your post count was when you started this thread. But rest assured, I am not impressed, and I am not convinced that your 1000+ posts mean anything. We started at about the same time (March) and I don’t have as many posts as you. But I read twice as much as I post. I have spent 3 straight hours cruising around and not posted anything. I respect posters with low post counts and extremely well-thought out comments much more than I do posters with high counts. It doesn’t mean anything to me.

Let the newbies play around. Eventually they’ll lose interest or develop their own posting style. Either way, it’s more interesting for me to read their posts than to peruse another techchick flame or another old-timers private joke that I don’t care about.

Everyone who really gets pissed about it, climb off your high horse for a second or at least sympathize a little. Jesus, people get excited about stupid shit.

  1. NOW I’m excited & 'hot",too, oh baby.

  2. And isn’t that what I just said, above? But some good newbies have come in here, made a “faux pas”, gotten ripped a new one, and then left, figuring we are all mean assholes 9when just some us are). So why not some advice, which they can ignore if they wish? I would have like to have read some of this stuff when I 1st started here, myself. And, you are right: a high post count is only an indication of experience, not a guarantee.
Read the posts in this thread, with the possible exception of the “op”, I was advising, not slamming newbies.

**BarnStormer **:

Funny. I remember thinking the same thing about the people ( like N4Sara and DanielITWD ) that I was coming up with.

You go Nacho !
Damn Daniel, do you work or eat or sleep ? I mean judas on a freakin trisket, what the hell is your posts per day ? Gotta be some kind of record. . .

They did a count some time ago in MPSIMS, when the new logos came on. I was “only” 9th in posts-per-day. I read VERY fast. And, yes, it is nice to have a high post count, but no, it does not “prove” anything.

Is it better to lurk a while and then post? I didn’t do this, jumped right in the first day. Haven’t been using proper citing techniques either, used to do so when writing college term papers. Not a bad idea; I wish newspapers would do citing techniques more.

I really wouldn’t worry about it, SW.

It always a good idea to get a sense of a MB’s personality bu lurking a while, but I think I myself dove in rather quickly too. New blood is always a good thing.

That being said, I’m closing this thread as it was deceased a long time ago only to be inadvertently pulled from the brink of Lazarus’ box.

Or something.
