New Posters You Like

There has been much said about all the new posters that people don’t like. Ad Nauseum.

Let’s name the ones we do like. I’m not actually sure what everyone’s definition of a new poster would be, so, let’s just say anyone that has joined since Jan. 1, 2000.

I really enjoy Esprix. I also like MysterEcks. I’m sure I’m missing a bunch and will post them as I think of them.

Oh, and even if you fall into the above definition of new and have other “new” poster favorites, please, by all means, join in!

For all of you old-timers, What’s the deal with hating “newbies”? I was just in the BBQ pit and read about five flames against new people, which seems extreme.

It’s a message board, not a secret society. It’s a public message board. If someone contributes and you disagree, and think you are superior simply because you have been registered since january 1999, then grin and bear it. It’s so out of line to act like you own this thing because you have been around longer.

For the record, I have been reading Great Debates for about a year and finally decided to join. And I read at least 50 messages before I actually post, although sometimes I get excited about a topic and post right away.

Also, I really enjoy reading this board but it seems like you all expect the newbies to prove something…not everyone who has been around for a year makes the most intelligent posts.

I should say that no one has said anything personal to me, it’s just a feeling I get - like I am being judged.

Anyway, if everyone hates me, I’ll just delete the addy from my favorites list and move on. It’s a message board, not life or death - a message board.

Can’t we all just get along

Nacho4Sara: Don’t let the bastards grind you down. It’s not the newbies (hell, I’m still a newbie) but a few bad apples who have come on this board and really embarass themselves.

In general for every new poster who really goes out of his way to piss everyone off, there’s a hundred who just slip right in and we accept without comment.

There’s no official “welcoming committee” here. You have to be at least self-confident enough to put your views out there and subject them to the criticism of your peers. Rest assured, people here will evaluate you on your writing, not on your post count or time on board.

I’m still very new myself, but I don’t feel judged. Maybe I’m too dense to notice, but I think eveyone who has responded to one my threads or responses had been encouraging. I’m not the most controversial person around, but I think I’ve spoken my mind, and on some pretty personal issues, too. Take everything, and everybody, with a large dose of humor, which is how it is all meant anyway.
Some of these folks, new, old and in between are really funloving and some have a biting sense of humor. But everyone I’ve “met” means well, until you really step out of line, looking for a fight. Then…boy do you get one!!

Well, I like Nacho4Sara and SingleDad! (SingleDad has twice as many posts as I do, I don’t really think of him as a newbie anyway.) Newbies are good. People who defend the purity of the MB, etc., etc., should seriously rethink what their priorities are.

Having actually been in a cult, I can say with some authority that a desire for “purity” is one of the big markers for cult-ness.

I have to say here that the vast majority of regs are not hung up on purity, and some of the ones who seem hung up on it are just having a bad day.

I’m new here too and I feel okay. It’ll be awhile before I get noticed like Satan, aha and Wally but I like this place. Its fun.

I try not to add inane comments to stuff that has nothing to do with the OP (btw what does that mean? Opening Post?)

to get to the OP I like dragonlady, SingleDad and Nacho4Sara. You guys are cool I think.

I think it’s time we show Sarah the Handshake

SingleDad: care to explain what cult you have been in? Just curious - I understand if you don’t want to answer.

Coldie likes me, he just wont admit it.
Swimming Riddles does too, and she has admitted it.

As for me, I like Sue Duhnym. She has really great kids. Ummmm, none of which are mine. Really.

I’m a newbie according to the definition above. I posted in the Pit about jumping all over newbies. I thought it was funny that everyone answered back that they did mean all newbies. Just the ones they didn’t like.

This place is intimidating at first. But if you can’t take a joke, or if your skin is very thin, this is not the message board for you.

BTW, what happened to my big welcome? How come nobody loves me? I’m my own favorite newbie and since my opinion is the one that is most important to me, that means I’m also the most important newbie.

Having a huge ego also helps here at the Straight Dope.

Oh my god! How could I have forgotten SingleDad? Definitely on my list of favorites.

I guess I’m still a newbie, don’t have access very often. I like it here, I can learn a lot and laugh out loud throughout the day. So for all of you that have taught me a thing or two since I arrived, thanks. For all of you who have made me laugh, I love ya, what else can I say??

Sarah, under no circumstances let Coldy show you his “handshake
no matter what he tells you, they dont do that in the Masons…

How would you know, civilian?

Oh, will nobody help this Widow’s son?

wink, wink, nudge, nudge, _the crow flies by moon light, HONK HONK…miaow.

In no particular order:

Gadarene: Excellent, interesting new topics, and a good, even-tempered debater. Even if he had the poor form to pick a name close enough to mine that people get us confused.

SingleDad: We can always use more logic in GD.

pepperlandgirl: I like her “Roman War Machine” topic.

Twin: A pretty nice guy…for a fundamentalist. Seriously, I like having people with differing opinions, as long as they are amenable to reasoning and are not obnoxious. I’m afraid Twin has gone back to the LBMB, though.

Dusy: Apologized nicely to manny once he explained about the images. Hasn’t run off or whined too much for getting flamed by the regs, so she’s showing some spunk. (If she keeps whining about the evil regs, I’m going to like her less, though; I hate whining.)

I’m sure I forgot to mention some newbies I like, but blame it on my lousy memory (and the fact that I rarely venture outside of GD and I don’t always check the name of the poster, or notice their date of registering). But I wanted to extend my appreciation to all non-troll newbies. New opinions and arguments and personalities keep this place lively. Welcome to the SDMB. (Of course, my appreciation of you doesn’t mean I won’t mercilessly shred your posts in GD if I don’t think they’re up to snuff.)

Oh, I think that Paddyman John is simply the best!

Ok John, hand me the beer now.

Well, I’ll jump in here with some newbie posters I like.

I think defining “newbies” as those on the board after 1/1/00 is waaaaaay too broad. After all, I registered in January (after some months of lurking), now have over 500 posts and have been to two doper get-togethers, and I think I would now fit anyone’s definition of a “reg”. Similarly, SingleDad, SwimmingRiddles, Biggirl, Green Bean, and a host of others.

Confining myself to those who signed up in April or later, off the top of my head I would say that our great new posters include:

pepperlandgirl, Gadarene, Nacho4sara, Ptahlis, aceospades, beakerxf, junebeetle, El Guapo, and MisterEcks

I’m sure that I’m missing a bunch, but those are a few that popped into my mind. There are also the tons of folks that start out quietly until one day you realize that they have several hundred quality posts.

I for one am very pleased to have all of these new folks here. Though over time the styles of the newbies (who turn into old regs) will cause the complexion of the board to shift, I think that it is a sign of healthy growth.

Welcome newbies – old regs to be.

Aside from the trolls, I can’t think of a new poster that I don’t like. I, for one, enjoy having all of these new voices and think that they have added something very valuable to our board.
