Damn you Apple and your vicious, brilliant, decisions

Because at one point PowerPC chips actually were better, and then IBM dropped the ball and Intel became the only option left?

the switch to Intel was set in motion the second Jobs returned in 1997. It was only until OS X was firmly established that the switch was even possible, though.

ooh! ooh! Bring up the one button mouse now! We’re overdue!

ETA: Then we can bring up Vista, it’s a similar vintage.

I can only see one real drawback to Apple products - the nutjob fans. Not all users are bad, but many of them are. I think if Jobs starting selling dog crap on a stick they would buy it by the case.

They remind me of some sports fans who can’t just cheer for their own team, they spend as much time bashing the other teams, mostly their main rival. Like the Red Sox fans who are into “Yankees suck” Of course I guess that is the result of not winning a WS for so long.

It’s very good that there are 3 options now , Windows, Mac and Linux.

again, because “safety” is not “security.” to use a tired old analogy, using a Mac is like living way out in the sticks and leaving the doors and windows of your house open 24/7. you’re likely “safe” because the likelihood of someone coming by and trying to mess with your shit is low, but you’re in no way “secure” because you’re 0wned the second someone actually tries.

using Windows is like having bars on your windows, 6 deadbolts on your steel-reinforced door, a pack of pit bulls as guard dogs, and an alarm system, but you live in the projects. you’re fairly “secure” but you aren’t “Safe” since enough people are trying to kick your door in, smash your windows, and knock holes in your wall that someone is more likely to succeed.

Except, as the guy that knows IT in my family, I get to spend two days rehanging your door every six months or so because you had to download another goddamn Puppydog screensaver.

Again, do you think you’re really covering anything new in this never-ending debate?
Back on topic: having profiles would also allow me to play the various games and accomplish them on my terms, not come back a week later and find the kids have finished Angry Birds for me.

it’ll go on as long as some Mac users believe it “can never happen” on the Mac.

Then you have some reading comprehension skills…nobody’s said ‘it can never happen’, we’ve said ‘it hasn’t happened yet’.

I’ve been saying ‘it hasn’t happened yet’ since my iBook in 2001. We might get hit by an asteroid, too, doesn’t mean I spend a whole lotta time worrying about the things that could happen.

Find one what? An example of unnecessary and unprovoked attacks against Windows? Are you so new to the Internet that you seriously have never seen that happen? If you’re truly interested (you’re clearly not), Google it yourself.

One of the reasons I chose not to buy an iPad was because of Apple’s tight control of the platform. I’d prefer to wait until there are better tablet options from other, less controlling companies. It looks like a fine product overall though, and I can understand why many people would buy one.

To user your analogy: my point is, if I hear of a friend getting mugged walking home one night, and say “that never happens to me, and I’m not afraid of it”, he can say all he wants “that’s because you live in the sticks, I live in the big city”. What I care about is that I don’t get mugged, and that I’m not afraid when I walk home at night.

No, you made the claim that there are unprovoked attacks on Windows on the SDMB. You made the claim that there was a balanced fight going on. My claim is that it is extremely unbalance, and the Windows fanboys are the ones who absolutely must come into every Apple thread and shit on Apple users. Given the number of PC threads, you would expect that you can easily find one, but the best I can come up with is one from 2006.

The attacking on is not equal. I’m not saying that it doesn’t happen the other way ever, but it is definitely the Windows fanboys that can’t resist starting up.

I consider an open architecture to be a minus not a plus. Windows fanboys may like corrupt files, conflicts, glitches and viruses, but I don’t.

Can I lend my phone to your kids? I am hopelessly stuck on Angry Birds and could do with someone finishing it for me just to save face :o

Then you need the Mighty Eagle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4P3ueF4CxY

Actually, I didn’t. I wasn’t restricting my statements to the SDMB. But since you asked: reason number umptillion why I hate Windows - Miscellaneous and Personal Stuff I Must Share - Straight Dope Message Board

You should not assume that someone who disagrees with you is a “fanboy” of any stripe. It is also laughably disingenuous to suggest that anybody likes corrupt files, conflicts, glitches, and viruses. I’m surprised you didn’t make a comment about using the “Start” menu to “Shut Down”. I mean, what’s up with that, right?

And people who buy surfing toys want to see flash videos and be able to download movies without making a project out of it. The price of closed architecture is that you get what Apple says you get.

How long did Mac clones last? About a year? I can’t remember when that was , guess it was sometime in the 90s. Maybe early to mid 90s. I suppose that was an idea that was doomed to failure from day 1.

I’m not an Apple fanboi, but I find those who constantly invoke that tired Apple-fanboy meme to be equally obnoxious. It only further inhibits rational discussion about the relative merits of the OS.

This thread’s been reported. The OP was not about Mac vs. PC…You’re free to open a thread over in the Pit.

(Seems strangely pedantic for a MPSIMS thread in which the OP literally curses Apple )

I wonder if User Profiles is something that is being considered for a future OS update. Of course, it wouldn’t fit for phones at all. But, it is something that has a lot of merit with the iPad. They could make a system wide User Profile, that would allow all sorts of modifications according to the user who is logged in. Barring that, it would not surprise me to see application developers come out with their own User Profiles that allows people to log in depending on the user.

A couple of friends got iPads for Christmas. They really are nice devices. Especially nice for people who aren’t techy people and just want something to work without too much muss or fuss. It will be interesting to see what refinements they introduce in the next version.
