Okay, this is weird. I can verify it’s weird because a ton of Google searches yielded 0 relevant results – that NEVER happens! Unfortunately, it also seems hard to explain…
In short, my damn lower lip rests right on top of my upper teeth (but not the lower ones) and it feels really freakin’ annoying. It’s most noticeable when I’m trying to sleep (since I sleep on my back, I’m guessing gravity is pulling my lip toward my teeth, thus exaggerating the problem), and as such, I tend to be a mouth-breather when sleeping.
Essentially, if I were to touch my bottom lip, I could feel my upper teeth through it. The lower teeth can’t really be felt as they’re recessed further in my mouth by a few millimeters (slight overbite perhaps?). It seems as if my bottom lip covers practically the entire set of teeth. I noticed if I move my lower jaw forward (so it’s practically in alignment with the tip one), the problem seems to go away.
Is this unusual? Have any of you experienced anything similar? And I never thought I’d be asking this question, but where does your lower lip sit in relation to your teeth when your mouth is closed?
I think that’s the normal arrangement of lips and teeth. It’s never bothered me, though. Are your teeth unusually sharp or jagged, etc? Or maybe your lip is unusually sensitive.
If I touch my lower lip, I can feel my lower teeth and the very edge of my uppers. I’ve never actually felt my teeth rubbing against the inside of my lips, though. I’m not a dentist, but it sounds as if you have an overbite.
I see you posted this years ago but just thought I would message back as I have a similar problem to the one you had and I wanted to see how you dealt with it!
This is the only thing I have found on the internet that sounds likes my problem. I’ve felt it for a couple of years but it seems to feel worse now. I went back to my orthodontist as my front teeth used to stick out alot before I had braces when I was younger and I thought they might be moving forward again. He said they seemed fine and my bite was normal. However, I feel I that my upper teeth are always sticking into my lower lip and it feels really annoying, especially when sleeping. Did you do anything to deal with your problem, it’s driving me a bit crazy and no-one seems to understand what I mean.
I have a significant overjet, so not only are my upper teeth in contact with my lower lip all the time, but the edges of my teeth kind of poke into it. When I smile you can see that my teeth rest on top of my lip (though I have a full bottom lip which keeps me from looking very rabbit-y). It’s never bothered me for a second and I sleep with my lips closed.
Make an appointment for a retainer/splint/mouthguard-thingy fitting with your dentist. They will make them for TMJers with night bruxism. I imagine if you have significant trouble sleeping, they’d be happy to make you a dental appliance.
I’m over it. Finally found these posts with similar problems. How have I lived my life with a normal mouth then last 2 years I can’t bear it it is on my mind daily bothers me immensely. Help. Can feel my bottom lip cover top teeth during the day but mostly when sleeping. When I notice it during the day I try to correct my lips adjust teeth blah blah blah. Constantly.
Surely there must be people out there with this problem but more importantly someone with an answer. Do I need to see an orthodontist or surgeon for lip surgery??
I can’t keep going like this I’m going mad as it consumes me.
You can get something called a bite guard that will fit over your top teeth and smooth things out. You can get one from your dentist and I see them advertised as well. You may be able to find kits at the pharmacy.
As far as the “awake” time, talk to your dentist. As time goes on, your teeth get worn. You may be noticing sharper edges where you didn’t have them before. Have them take a look and make sure you don’t have anything that needs smoothing or patching.
