Dan Fogelberg has died

CK Dexter H:

I believe the “who’s Dan Fogelburp?” comment was an Opus/Bloom County reference.

ETA: an unofficial reference here

Much sadness. I always said he was a good singer, but primarily a poet.

I mean, in his song “Why Is Love Always The Last To Know” (a song about breaking up/divorce for those who aren’t familiar with it), he sings:
“Jealousies
And legal fees
Running away like two refugees”

Who in the name of Og could disrespect a turn of phrase that good?

RIP, Mr. Fogelberg!

I, in fact, do know who Dan Fogelberg is. I am not a fan of his music, but I can understand how his fans do feel for his loss.

My post, as mentioned by squeegee, was a reference to the comment about Lola Granola that I had specifically quoted in my reply. If I had quoted the OP and made the same comment, then yes, that would have been thread shitting. I do think that making that accusation towards me was uncalled for. There are lots of Bloom County fans here, who I assumed would get the reference.

My apologies to anyone who I may have offended with the comment.

Adam: In CK’s defense, it was a pretty oblique reference. But I couldn’t find the strip online, so I don’t see how it could have been less oblique via a link or something. $.02, FWIW, etc. [/hijack]

My dad was a part-time professional singer who encouraged and influenced me in my musical adventures over the years. When he was dying and bed-ridden with Parkinson’s, he enjoyed it when I would bring my guitar to his room and sing a few songs for him. His favorite? Leader of the Band.

And, papa, I don’t think I said ‘I love you’ near enough

RIP

A very talented musician, but I must admit I always found his songs a bit of a downer. As it happens, “Same Old Lang Syne” was playing the restaurant where my book club met two weeks ago. All of us knew the song but couldn’t remember the singer’s name, although it was on the tip of our tongues. It wasn’t until I got back to court to Google it that the name came up, which I then immediately recognized. Hadn’t heard from him in awhile. Rest in peace, D.F.

Well heck, I’m glad that Adam Yax did it first, as I came in here to do the same thing. Bloom County is oblique? On the Dope?

As did we. It was really the only song I chose, my wife picked the rest.

I assumed it was a humorous reference, but had no clue where it came from and thought it was skirting the edge of okay-ness since it was posted un-explained.

I read the Bloom County collections religiously about 20+ years ago, but don’t have the name-check references at my fingertips…if I can serve as a single data point on the Doper survey.

**Crotalus **- great post, man ::sniff::

If it matters … I’ll serve as Data Point #2: what WordMan said. Specific Bloom County quotes are now over the memory horizon.

Just to let people know where they can find the specific cartoon, if they want to see it: Billy and the Boingers Bootleg, page 38, the bottom cartoon.

Another fan of Fogelberg’s music chiming in to say that I don’t think the “Dan Fogerburp” comment was out of line. The spouse and I have been affectionately calling him that for years because of that Bloom County cartoon.

I didn’t take any disrespect from it, but I suppose it might look different to someone who isn’t familiar with the cartoon in question.

I like Dan Fogelberg (well, except for one song that’s been associated with an unpleasant event in my life, but I’m mostly over it), I love Bloom County, and although I didn’t recognize the “Dan Folgerburp” quote, I assumed it was from Bloom County and meant with no disrespect.

I was just singing along with “Same Auld Lang Syne” the other day; I surprised myself that I still knew all the words, though I don’t own any of his albums. RIP.

I semi-recognized the quote but I thought it was inappropriate here, I just shrugged it off at first but now I am angry because it has hi-jacked the thread. Could we please drop all references to the comment and Bloom County now?

In honor of his passing, I downloaded a couple of Dan Fogelberg tunes from I-Tunes today that I literally had not heard since college, way back in the late 70s. They sounded as good today as they did back then. (If you are interested, the two songs were **Dancing Shoes ** and Loose Ends, both from the Nether Lands LP.)

I can’t remember why I bought it, but his Greatest Hits was part of the soundtrack to my freshman year in college. I know I’d heard Longer on the radio, but Leader of the Band and Run for the Roses just touched me somehow.

Had he been recording recently? Why did he stop? Did he stop touring? Enquiring minds and all that.

…and Morning Sky, a perfect little song.

R.I.P.

I had no idea who Dan Fogelberg was until reading this thread. Love his song ‘Longer’. What movie is that from with a girl singing it?

He seems like a talented, true artist.

I saw Dan at least 7 times in concert. I had been checking his website for the past year or so hoping he’d tour again - somehow I thought he was going to make it. :frowning:

My favorite memory was going to his “Exiles” concert - where Dan came out in full leather with an electric guitar and started to ROCK - which freaked out most of his fans, and about 50% of them walked out… I stayed through the whole concert, and Exiles ended up becoming one of my favorite albums. From what I remember, he had just broken up with his first (?) wife and was pissed off at the world - and showed it on that album / at that concert.

Went to another of his concerts that was acoustic only - which might surprise a lot of people… but it was in a tiny hall, with about 200 people total, and Dan on a stool playing an acoustic guitar - nothing else except a piano player… I never wanted that night to end.

He’ll always be in my heart.
