Dancing with the Stars -- DWTS -- Fall 2010

Further reflections the morning after:

I’m sorry for Brandy – poor kid just did. not. see. it. coming – but you’ve got to wonder whether she’s been paying attention at all. If Bristol made it to the semis, obviously there was ballot box stuffing.

Hope like hell ABC fixes the email address loophole next season.

Don’t think Bristol can actually win – after the Kelly Monaco debacle season one, in which she won with the popular vote despite clearly not being as good as John Hurley, they rerigged how the finale votes are weighted. I don’t understand the system, exactly, but I’m pretty sure the judges can effectively veto an undeserved win, which they surely will.

Glad Kyle made it to the finals – as Lacey said last night, whoda thunk, week one? – but he’s worked hard and thrown himself into it. He should take second.

And, yeah, the Cheryl and Derek dance was terribly disappointing – too many tricks, not enough dancing. Not even sure what dance it was supposed to be – a jive?

cough

So I was wrong about Rick. But he was really hot. He just never got any better at the dancing part.

Based on what I’m seeing on the blogs, it’s Bristol’s. The dances next week are just a formality.

If Bristol’s fans are stuffing the ballot box for her, which to all indications they are because they care more than non-fans, they can’t mathematically eliminate her.

If all of the contestants are getting about a third of the votes, then the judges can nudge one dancer toward a win. But say we have a situation where the audience votes are split 40/30/30. If contestant B gets 3 perfect 30s, the contestant A only needs to 75 judges points to win. If contestant A is getting 50% of the votes (which I think is not unlikely), then even if the judges give B 3 perfect 30s, and A gets across the board 6s and 7s - A will win. The judges don’t give 6s and 7s in the final.

The judges’ choice next week isn’t whether she’s going to win - but how. Are they going to give her scores fairly similar to Kyle & Jennifer’s so it looks like from their view it’s a tossup over who should win, or are they going to make it look like from their side it clearly should have been “__________,” but the fans are the final decision makers.

The funniest thing about those links is these people’s belief that having Bristol succeed is “driving the left nuts.”

I don’t think 'the left" gives a crap.

I don’t know about the left, but my mother, who’s ultra conservative keeps saying every week, “You know she’ll get voted off tonight.” And while I don’t ask her why she says that, I’ve always been positive that if Bristol ever was voted off, my mother would assume it’s because her last name is Palin.

Well, this leftie is pissed off mostly because better dancers are getting eliminated in the process.

As someone who likes the show, I’m annoyed.

As a member of the left, I don’t care about the outcome but I am confused as to why someone would conflate a reality tv show that involves glitter and spray tans with politics. My feelings on Derek’s choreography and my feelings about the budget deficit are wholly separate from each other.

Some people care entirely too much.

Did you see the WTF look on Derek’s face when Bristol made it through? Bristol should have been eliminated around week 4. They better fix the show so this does not happen again. Since the show is a farce, at this point it would serve the show right if Bristol wins.

Can we please stop having “celebrities” whose only claim to fame is a famous parent?

I’ve been watching a lot of prior seasons of dwts on youtube. For example from Season 2, Tony Dovolani and Stacy Keibler. The judges gave her rave reviews every dance. She even got a perfect triple ten on a dance. She had these long, long legs that made her a natural dancer. She came in third. A major upset.

Then Season 5 Tony had Melissa Rycroft. Once again lots and lots of 9’s and 10’s from the judges the entire competition. They loved her dancing. Third place.

I could easily list three or four more great dancers that didn’t win. Brandy is in great company.

That’s just how it goes on dwts. It’s nothing more than a fluff tv show and a popularity contest. It’s not meant to be taken seriously. The first season I actually watched I was pretty upset when my favorite got screwed. After that, I just shake my head and move on when a great dancer gets voted off. I couldn’t stand to watch this show if I invested any emotion or energy into who wins.

These are Sarah Palin fans we’re talking about. Not the brightest bunch of coconuts on the planet, are they?

I followed that link, and while it kind of bugs me that they’re gloating about gaming the system, anybody could have done that for any other contestant (and who’s to say they didn’t? Because Kyle is also still there).

At least with her last dance Bristol looked like’d she’d finally decided to try to earn it. For most of the early sessions she merely looked miserable. Like she’d rather be anywhere else.

This is the first season of the show that I watched. Is next week a double elimination where they’ll pick the winner?

In the Paliniverse, any one who isn’t totally in the tank for you is “the left”.

Yes, next week is the finale. All three will do a freestyle dance, plus I think a regular dance as well, and people will vote Monday night.

Tuesday I believe there’s a third dance, which only the judges get to score – this is where we hope the Palin effect can be short-circuited. They then announce the third-place finisher, more blah blah and suspense, and then announce the winner at the end of the show.

Couldn’t the effect also be short-circuited by having the show declare that they’ll only accept phone or text votes?

I feel bad for Bristol. Even if by some miracle she managed to pull off the world’s greatest dances next week, she’ll never be able to feel that she did it on the basis of her own abilities. If she wins, she’ll know it was fans of her mother who did it. That sucks for her.

I doubt they’ll revamp the voting system for the final week (and hope they don’t, because I only vote online). They might be able to tighten security at the web site, before next Monday, dunno how complicated that would be.

I trust, however, they’ll close the “no confirmation” loophole before next season.

This Palin thing is getting pretty heated. Mark tweeted that he’s only doing his job, teaching and performing with the celebrity. He’s taking a twitter break until after the final.

I can imagine some of the tweets he must be getting.

This may light a fire under Mark and Bristol. I know that’s how I’d respond. Bristol can’t transform into a great dancer overnight. But, maybe she’ll at least go out on a high note.

Kyle seems like the one to watch. He’s really picking up support in these final weeks. This is by no means an easy Jennifer win. She’ll have to earn the mirror ball.
