My first thought was that Bill Nye was too old, and would break.
On reading the list, I wondered if Keyshawn Johnson would dance with Keymark Ballas.
That is all. I’m probably not even going to watch this cycle anyway.

If Tristan feels personally attacked that’s ashame. He’s of course doing the network’s bidding and wants to stay positive for Valerie, naturally. However, I think the writer of the piece had a very good point. Tristan takes his role full on, but what he doesn’t say is that he doesn’t get a say on who he gets to dance with. The casting department made that decision for him. They are the ones who should really be ashamed by casting her. She’s not in remission, even though her health has improved so this is very precarious, it could change at any time. I’ve watched a friend die very quickly even though we thought she was winning the fight and we all were pulling for her. I understand you have to live your life until you die, but what if she dies mid-season? All of a sudden this fun, cheezy escapism turns into something very real, and I don’t think that’s what the audience signed up for when they tune in. Tristan is very serious thoughtful young man, and he’s a darling to be her knight in shining armour, but the burden the network has placed on Valerie’s dance teacher is shameful.
I am concerned for Tristan and how he’ll deal with Valerie Harper’s eventual death. Hopefully it won’t be for another year or so, but cancer can take people very quickly.
I’m hoping that she’ll get to have some fun and dance a few weeks. I’m sure she knows that there’s no guarantees of anything in life.
Tonight’s the night!
I love Bill Nye. Hope they find him a tall partner!
Did they really need to include two actresses from Saved By The Bell in the same season?
(Leah Remini was a regular for those weird “beach” episodes they did for part of a season)
I don’t watch the show but my mom does and I was asking her who the “stars” were this year and had to LOL at that.
I usually don’t mind Bruno but this week was too much.
And the camera guy kept going to weird closeups during the dance and zoomed in on faces. When they’re dancing, I want to see feet.
First week thoughts:
Brant - off beat at times and Blurred Lines is not a song where the rhythm is subtle.
Leah - hated the choreography so much I don’t know what I think about her dancing.
Corbin - ringer. Giving him non-ballroom on the first week just makes him look like a plant. They could have at least made him do something with more limits to start out.
Jack - is adorable. A little stiff, but absolutely adorable.
Amber - nice. Very good opening chacha.
Elizabeth - she dances weird. There’s something just slightly odd.
Bill N - a. he’s not good. b. she did the “new pro” mistakes (too many gimmicks, way overdancing her partner, “funny” choreography) - it does not bode well. It looks like he has fan support, though, so he might get another week.
Keyshawn - he’s going to get another week, no matter what. But he was off time for the few steps he had.
Christina - exact same comments that I had for Corbin.
Bill E - much better than I expected. I liked watching him dance.
Valerie - pretty nice…much better than her ex-co-star did. (I want to see her dance to “Let’s Face the Music and Dance.” I love that song and it fits her storyline.)
Snooki - not bad, but she kept disengaging
I’m on the west coast and I’m the first one to comment. The show is definitely dropping down the ratings.
Do you think his speedwalking experience will be an asset?
Wow, so many new pros. And so many great first time performances.
Just a few observations:
Bill Nye, creepy old guy. Whenever I see someone dance like him, I always think, “Stretch. Do lots and lots of stretching.”
I’m really surprised he still had plenty of people supporting him after that dance.
Amber. I liked her, but did she really deserve 9s?
Bill Engvall- Much better than I thought he would. He has potential.
Valerie Harper - People in their 50’s or older usually don’t do that well, but the way she danced, you wouldn’t know she’s 73.
Snooki - Needed a little more elegance and grace, but that probably wasn’t possible due to the song choice.
Week 1 Impressions:
I didn’t watch Brant, so I can’t comment
Leah, they’re off to a slow start with a very safe dance, but she can dance, we’ll see how it goes next week
Corbin; excellent dancer, but I thought this piece was hectic and really didn’t show his ability well, seemed nervous and struggled with a lift.
Jack: excellent choreography from Cheryl he has some real quality there in footwork and dance position, now to sustain the movement. .
Amber: well she moves well but there was very little Cha Cha content
Elizabeth: beautiful dancer, matched very well to Val’s movement, excellent choreography, nuanced and intricate.
Bill Nye: has a good ear for music, but he has significant posture and turned in foot issues.
Keyshawn: struggled on the dance floor and missed his timing
Christina: I found the choreography to be rather lumbering and she danced heavy.
Bill E: He went in and out of focus, contrary to the judges his dance position was quite poor, kept dropping his shoulders. Jack had much better arm control.
Valerie: As expected. She kept losing her centre for turning, but that is something that does happen as we age and haven’t kept up in dancing.
Snooki : Finally some Cha Cha content! It was pretty good, except she has to work on smoothing out her movement not be quite so choppy from one transition to the next.
The dance was more reminiscent of the moves of the high fiv’n white guys.
I didn’t get home till well after 9, so decided to wait and watch the whole show tonight.
So far I like the new format. Brooke’s job changed significantly. She’s no longer doing doing the interview after each dance. She’s interviewing them before they dance. It worked last night. Brooke showed more personalty then usual. I’m concerned things will change mid season when the competition gets serious. Interviewing someone before they compete can be hard because they are trying to fully focus on that 1 min 30 sec dance and doing it well. The post dance interview is much more spontaneous. The dancers can react to how well they performed. Once in awhile the joy really shines through.
They moved the judge’s table. There seemed to be issues with the judges talking to the dancers? Bruno especially seemed thrown off. I think maybe the sight lines are off? It seemed like Bruno was trying to make eye contact by standing up.
Theres some good celebrity dancers in the cast. The real amateurs this season have no chance of going very far. I felt terrible for Bill Nye. Weird Science is a terrible dance song. Plus the choreography they gave him was too gimmicky.
I’m glad we got a lot of the contemporary dances out of the way week 1. They don’t belong on a ballroom dance show.
Bruno is creepy, just like Tom said.
Bills, I liked. Nye needs posture coaching and some real steps, not gimmicks.
I was surprised at the 9s, but it WAS a very fun routine to watch.
As much as I sometimes dislike him, Bruno has always been the one who will get up from his chair to watch dancers’ feet, and is always keeping time with the music to make sure the dancers are on the beat. That makes me respect him a a bit more. Carrie Ann has her schtick about no lifts, and Len wants pure and traditional dance forms, and they’re very vocal about that. It would be easy to see Bruno as the comic relief, only I think he really does care about the quality of the dancing. I wish he’d just tone down the over-the-top lech persona he puts on.
StG
Did anyone else get the feeling that the whole production was off somehow, like there hadn’t been enough rehearsal with the production crew or something? It seemed like a lot of the camera work was off, cues weren’t quite on, things like that. I wonder how much the change in the set had to do with it. There was the aforementioned Bruno, being too close to the new dancers’ “pit,” (which I think is a terrible idea, they shouldn’t be stuck in the middle of the audience when they have so much else to deal with). I also noticed that the band is jammed further back now, we didn’t get any shots of the singers at all that I saw. The whole thing just seemed a little less professional to me than previous seasons.
The best thing about Brant was they got Blurred Lines out of the way. Sure thing they were going to use it this season.
Bill N has a ton of fan support, but can’t dance a lick. Keyshawn doesn’t appear to have any musicality - probably an early exit.
Overall I like the new format.

And I wish they’d let him do some of that old-fashioned jitterbug it seems he’d do so well. They could call it ‘swing.’
He was fairly mellow tonight. Usually he’s way more high energy.
Aren’t the celebs on DWTS (I’ve never seen it) typically aging stars trying to revitalize a declining career? Does Bill Nye fall into that category?
