Dancing with the Stars -- DWTS -- Spring 2013

I’m surprised, but delighted, that she was booted. I really thought her fan base was going to keep her around for a few weeks.

I’m thinking that her utter lack of effort undercut her fan support. Her elimination was quite a surprise but totally deserved.

And I’m happy that [del]Sharna[/del] Andy survived for at least another week.

I was surprised the fans weren’t there for Wynonna since she was the most recognized name out there. It was difficult to watch this struggle, I sensed there was more at play in her emotional state. Depression/anxiety can literally paralyse a person. Regardless it was the right elimination.

To me, it looked like she put no effort whatsoever into at least trying to get into the rhythm, never mind anything else. Her expression screamed “I don’t wanna do this” and it never changed.

She and Tony were just interviewed on Good Morning America a few minutes ago, and she mentioned her husband going through some very significant health issues not long ago. That no doubt also had a lot to do with her demeanor.

Yeah, her husband was in a major motorcycle wreck and she was nursing him in the aftermath – they had a package on it the first week. She said that she wanted to do something for herself after that, but this clearly turned out to be much less fun than she’d thought it would be.

Glad she went home, since she clearly didn’t want to be there. And glad her fans didn’t do a Master P with her.

Frankly, Wynonna has always been a self-centered whiner and I’m glad to see the back of her.

StG

A long time ago I read Naomi Judd’s autobiography, Love Can Build a Bridge. It was a totally self-serving piece of crap, published in 1989 when the Judds were at their height. In it, Naomi described her early life, including her brief marriage/hook up to Wynonna’s father and then her brief marriage/ hook up with Ashley’s father. After that she lived as a dirt-poor single mother in the backwoods of Kentucky.

At any rate, not too many years ago, I saw Wynonna on a talk show, I think Oprah, discussing her recent big trauma involving the fact she had just learned that she and Ashley had different fathers. Too bad she didn’t read her mother’s autobiography, she would have found out a decade sooner. It was about the phoniest thing ever - and the least a publicist can do when inventing a big trauma to get you on the shows is make sure it hasn’t been published earlier.
So glad she’s gone, too.

I just watched the first episode and dammit if I didn’t mind Andy Dick. He seemed sincere in his interview and appropriately humble after his dance. I don’t think he should or will win, but I won’t be actively rooting for him to be off my TV.

I’m a Ravens Fan and keep seeing facebook statuses and tweets encouraging “Ravens Nation” to vote for Jacoby Jones so I decided to check it out. Also, my mom watches and maybe it’ll give us something new to talk about. I don’t know if I’ll become enthralled enough to vote, but I’ll keep watching.

I should not have read this whole thread before watching all the available episodes, but I knew that before I did it. I guess Wynonna’s poor preformance wasn’t just first-time jitters.

Wouldn’t it be more fair for them all to start with the same style? If Ingo had foxtrot and Andy D had contemporary would they have ended up with the same scores?

I’m shocked people are voting for DL because of his good attitude

I think his attitude is terrible. For a comedian, he has absolutely no sense of humor about his dancing. Who would have thought a guy “from the streets” would take a ballroom dancing competition so seriously?
Contrast that with Andy Dick, a comedian who is also taking this very seriously, but isn’t swearing at the judges comments and acknowledges he is not a great dancer (and can smile about it) while working really hard to find his personal style and get better every week.

I know that no one goes on this show hoping to be the worst dancer but at some point you have to acknowledge the truth of your situation, right?

I never thought I would say these words but I actually *like *Andy Dick. (in a purely dancing sort of way, of course. I do think he needs to lay off the alcoholic comments every two minutes, but other than that he actually comes off charming.)

I was hoping for DL or Wynonna to go home, but didn’t really expect either, so I’m thrilled with the results.

I’m guessing D L and Vanderpump are the next 2 off. Pickler would be my pick for a shocking early exit.

Why so? Pickler is a surprisingly good dancer, has a considerable country music fan base, and is partnered with one of the most talented, good-looking and popular pros.

Interesting. That would shock the heck out of me. She’s high scoring this season, and I do think that Kellie is most likely to stay in this with some help actually by Wynonna leaving, country fans who may have had divided loyalties can rally around her. Also, she does have the most winningest pro with her, and he does have a lot of fans. The fact that she got a high score but not an encore or the prom Queen title leads me to think that she has enough support not to need any propping with the other types of prizes given out.

We don’t know if Zendaya has the staying power, I hope she does, she’s far and away my favorite and I have never voted for the Disney Kids as they seem so affected by hollywood. This girl is different, down to earth, great dancer excellent student of dancing, and still very much a kid. However, the history of the show has been that Disney kids beginning with Monique Coleman back in season 2 don’t have the fan bases of other contestants, and in one season season 12, it felt like bonus points 15 of them were designed to keep Disney kid Chelsea Kane stay in the competition.

Another season Rochon, one of Zendaya’s cast mates kept winning the dance offs because he was a great little dancer, but he was put in the dance offs because he just didn’t have the fan support. This season bonus points were handed out for twitter votes, but does twitter translate into actual votes on Monday night? It’s possible twitter is helping the young ones rock the vote, that’s her base, but it’s also one of those things where one thing, tweeting- just isn’t the same as actually going to a website or picking up a phone to cast a vote.

Bodog posted Week 4 odds

Dancing With The Stars Season 16 - Odds to Win

Zendaya Coleman 8/5
Kellie Pickler 2/1
Jacoby Jones 3/1
Aly Raisman 15/2
Ingo Rademacher 25/1
Sean Lowe 25/1
Victor Ortiz 75/1
Andy Dick 100/1
D.L. Hughley 100/1
Lisa Vanderpump 100/1
Zendaya is holding in the lead with an 8/5 shot at the title, Kellie is still hot on her heels at 2/1 and Jacoby is also very strong at 3/1 odds. The perception is the race is tightening up for these three contenders.

Aly dipped slightly again now she’s down at 15/2 or 7.5/1, however there are many who feel that this week’s contemporary dance will play to her strengths and the theme of the week should be inspirational, bringing her back up the ladder.

Then there’s the rest of the pack, Ingo, Sean have dropped to 25/1 but it’s still early and they can reverse that trend with strong performances. Victor is still at 75/1 odds, unchanged from last week. He’s not getting the bets to win. Lucky for him the strong performance and judges scores helped him to stay in.

Rounding out the bottom are Andy, DL and Lisa…All the bookies feel these three have virtually no chance of winning the mirrorball. Andy should get a boost this week with fan support because as he was determined to be in the real bottom 2, He’ll need votes to remain viable and fans will vote for the underdog. Lisa emerged out of the bottom 2 last week, but she still could find herself at the bottom this week if she puts in a lack lustre performance. The dramatic confrontation between Len and DL may in fact buy him another week, as his fans tend to rally for this situation.

So if you have a feeling that the longshots have a shot, now is the time to place your bets.

It’s telling that I’m watching late on the west coast and am the first one to comment this week -

  • I didn’t like Aly’s dance. It didn’t work for me and I didn’t like the way she connected to the music.
  • Andy pulled it off. Not a top dance of the week, obviously, but I enjoyed watching him dance. He tried, he did very good on his scale.
  • Kellie’s rumba was really choppy. And seeing old pictures of her shows that her current haircut isn’t doing her any favors, but the dance was still choppy.
  • Jacoby got the bad music of the night award (it’s a bad song and an even worse fox trot), but his kid is adorable.

I didn’t watch last night, nor did I last week. There’s something about this season that rubs me the wrong way, and for the life of me I can’t figure out why. It isn’t any one contestant in particular, it’s not the judges, it’s not Tom nor Brooke. I just don’t know what it is

I watched, it was just in between watching other stuff, and I couldn’t be arsed to turn on the computer to either a) vote or b) comment here.

The underdog comics contingent is doing fine – I’m rooting for Andy, and DL is growing on me (despite the fact that he walks around the floor, doesn’t dance)-- but the athletes are a disappointment this season. Jacoby has an underlying arrogance to him that I don’t care for; Victor is okay, but won’t last long and I won’t be too distraught to see him go; and though the Mark-with-gymnast combo traditionally does well, it’s never caught my imagination. Other than insane flexibility (which has not been explained – does she do yoga or something?) Kelli doesn’t have a lot to offer. Zendaya, god bless her, is a charming child and an insane dancer, so that’s fun to watch. Sean is a tool. Lisa, physically, isn’t going to last long – though thank god they dumped the dog schtick. I like Ingo, but he’s not much of a dancer.

Yeah. Meh season.

Hopefully the show will do the humane thing and put the dog’s owner out of her misery tonight.

I really like her partner - it’s obvious the producers felt the show needed a hot Russian. Gleb fills that role without the creepy wife-beater vibe that Maks gave off.

The dances were ok. None really jumped out at me. The pros have managed to to nearly ruin the Viennese Waltz for me. There was only one done properly last night. Kym choreographed a real VW in hold for Ingo. The VW is my favorite with the big sweeping circles they dance within. Peta’s VW with Sean didn’t even look like a VW. Andy of course isn’t capable and his pro’s VW was mostly out of hold. Hint, wide dramatic arm waving doesn’t make a VW.

The Foxtrots weren’t much better. Watch the early season Foxtrots. You see suits & tails and think of Fred and Ginger. This season they don’t even look like the same dance.

I have to say I loved that Samba from Zendaya and Val. Viewing it back it was just so crisp, great voltas and cruzado walks and the bachacata~! Only advanced Latin dancers attempt that. So it was rather ironic that Len said she should have had more Samba in her solo. Definitely hip hop inspired, but with a distinctive Samba feel I thought.

Many of the Solos had very little to do with the prescribed dance, Victor shadow boxed, Jacoby did some sort of hip hop/click his heels, Amy did 3 or 4 back handsprings, and Kellie rolled on the floor while DL walked on all fours.
Nobody got the note of not enough content, except Zendaya. I call bullshit on Len.

Thats probably the reason almost no one bothered commenting last night. There was almost no real content in most of those dances.

Zendaya and Val were the high point of the night. Ingo and Kym did a beautiful VW. The rest were just people doing whatever they wanted. They weren’t even trying to do rel ballroom.
