Dancing with the Stars Fall 2011

Louis’ Blog and rating of ep 3 dances. So far, he’s still offering some real, constructive criticism. It’s not easy since all these pros are his friends & contemporaries.

I recall last spring Lacey did a similar blog. Except she never criticized any of the dances. A cop out. I stopped reading it pretty quick because it was all fluff.

BTW, what’s the deal with Mark’s Puck haircut?

The results show has aired on the East Coast.
Yikes, not at all what I expected … excellent job of keeping the suspense going, producers! First Chaz safe, then Nancy, then Carson? Wow.

I am okay with who went home, and am actually rather hopeful that Mark will learn something from this. Not actually expecting it, but hopeful.

Has it ever been the case that the couple that did the judges’ choice dance at the start of the results show then went home at the end of the show?
Those ex hills stars just don’t have a fan base. Audrina lasted a little longer than Kristin. Takes more than a bikini to stay on dwts.

Another week of Chaz stumbling around while Lacey dances. I’ll take my bathroom break next week whiles he’s on.

Who cut the cheese?

Also, nothing to do with the dancing, but did their hairdresser quit this week? Everybody had flat hair–I mean the women. Even Brooke had a simple long ponytail (at least hers wasn’t flat).

I just saw the results. This reinforces something about the show that they cannot control, and that is that dancers with a pre-existing fan base have a distinct advantage over people like Kristin. She was a much better dancer than Hope or Chaz, but has very little to motivate a viewer to get up and vote for her. Not much.

Oh, and Len’s reaction was ironic given that the judges’ artificially inflated scores of the weaker dancers was also part of the problem. Their scores are supposed to help protect the top dancers from the inevitable popularity contest. If they’d have scored honestly, instead of emotionally, we might not have had such “crazy” results.

They made a huge deal of Len dancing last night and on the review show, and unless I missed something on the results show I saw him twist for all of like, five seconds maybe. What the hell?

Well, that was not what I’d hoped for at all. My other half is done with the show, so I’ll have a harder time trying to watch it. I was sorely disappointed with how short a time Len danced. I’ve never seen him dance at all and was really looking forward to it. Darn.

My DVR acted up, and I missed Len’s performance, and in fact all of the show except the last 10 minutes. Doesn’t sound like I missed much.

The only lesson here is to the voting audience, and it has to be re-taught every so often. Last time it was that Cheetah Girl from Disney - indisputedly the best dancer of the bunch, and she went down in the fourth or fifth week. It happens because many people vote for the people who do really badly but they want to stay on anyway, like someone above who at some point (first week?) split all their votes between Carson and Chaz, I think, assuming that the good dancers won’t be in trouble, while others vote for the person or couple of people they liked the best, period, again on the assumption that the good dancers will be safe anyway. Tom Bergeron summed it up perfectly when he speculated that the audience was probably thinking “Yeah, she’ll be fine.” and voted for other people.

Mark was at his best this past Monday night, having not overwhelmed his partner at all. He won’t take away any lesson from this, nor should he, except to maybe make sure that his partner comes up with some tear-inducing tragedy to commemorate in future. He may also try to get his future partners appeal more personally to the audience, but likeability is hard to fake, and the audience is unpredictable in that respect. I wouldn’t have expected Chaz to catch on as an audience favorite, but here he is, lumbering on to the dance floor yet again.

And, yes, the judges have several times chosen the person going down to do the encore, particularly when it was late in the season or they didn’t agree with the verdict.

I think it was a mix of disinterest for her, and dislike for Mark.

I’ve never liked Mark’s show boating. Yeah, others have done it, too. But he does it ALL THE TIME. Go host your own dance show, since all you care about is showing off your own dancing.

I agree with your hypothesis…but Chaz??? What is his pre-existing fan base: Sonny & Cher fans?

I think that was a large part of it. I’m pretty sure Mark is hurting his partners’ chances.
Her personal story was also not as moving as some of the others.
I didn’t like her samba. I think she could have gotten better, but I’m not that disappointed to see her go.

And the GLBT community.

Oh…right. You don’t suppose they watch dancing on TV?

Hope’s ESPN Body Cover.

That’s just not my idea of a woman. A guy with boobs just isn’t attractive. IMHO

But, it’s her life and choice.

Nah, you’re right – what was I thinking? :smack:

Good heavens! That’s rather scary looking. But we’ve seen her dolled up, and she not only looks very attractive, but she’s quite graceful. Not at all like a guy with boobs. So I think that photo is an aberration, targeted at the ESPN market.

Does not look like a guy. Also, what boobs?
