The likeability thing? That can take a while to kick in – IIRC, it took several weeks for Drew to win me over – and Stacy never did. (Heterosexual female here.)
What I’m glad about is that they haven’t tried to cast the “older guy who does it with a bit of a wink” role that John O’Hurley won with [belatedly] Season One, and George Hamilton did somewhat more calculatedly (and less successfully) Season Two. Jerry Springer just doesn’t have the dance skills to do that role.
(Speaking of previous winners – John O’Hurley was, at least for a while, on B’way in Chicago – has Drew Lachey gotten any work out of this?)
(Somewhat OT – anyone notice that people tend to refer to contestants – the stars, at least – as Firstname Lastname? Reminds me of figure skating, where that seems to be the case more than most other sports.)
Well, I’m not surprised to see Shanna go. I think Jerry got a lot of sympathy votes because of the way he reacted to his partner’s injury. He seems like a genuinely nice, caring guy.
Here’s one for the conspiracy buffs. I’m not sure how well Mario and his partner get along. Since she’s the one who does the choreography, could she have deliberately thrown in unnecessary, unorthdox moves to annoy the judges and get him a low score? He is good (and good looking!), but in some ways he reminds me of a hyperactive puppy!
After seeing him do that split, then rise back to his feet, during his “quick step” routine, I’d have to say, like, Total Ringer.
And I’m pretty sure Karina loathes him. But hey, she’s a pro. She’ll work through it.
Interesting that Willa scored near the bottom on fan votes despite the high technical level of her performance. Well, I guess I don’t like her all that much either.
After watching “So You Think You Can Dance” I am no so skeptical. There were quite a few untrained dancers who could dance circles around trained dancers. You either got rhythm or you don’t.
Sorry to see the local pro ( Jesse De Soto) go. He was good eye candy. Too bad he got stuck with Shana Moakler who couldn’t dance her way out of a paper bag. And who picked her dresses? Two weeks in a row she won the Ugly Dress contest. Ah, well, we won’t have her to kick around any more.
Mario did say he did breakdancing and street dancing, so that split move would fit perfectly with that style. I think he didn’t want to or didn’t like to learn the proper quickstep moves, so Karina let him have his way. Now he’s been slapped down by the judges and she probably can say, “I told you so!” and make him behave better from here on out. Either that or he’ll get thrown out on his adorable behind quickly, flashing his dimples all the way.
I was sorry to see Jesse go, too – mmm, yummy dancer eye candy! I actually cast a few votes for Willa just because I don’t want her pro, Maks, to go so quickly; talk about yummy dancer eye candy, he’s the best! Even if he is fully aware of it and uses it, I don’t care as long as he keeps swiveling those hips. [/shallow]
Maks’s grin all through that rumba last night was a bit much. But he’s still seriously hot; and I accept the fact that sometimes I just like to look and drool. [sub]wipes chin[/sub]
I think a safe mantra for this show is, “WTF is that music? How can they ________ to it?” At least 5 out of 6 musical choices leave me scratching my head, if not outright cringing.
Who wants to bet that Jerry Springer has now guaranteed that he’ll stay through the waltz, however long that takes?
Yeah, I thought that was pretty strange, to have males doing the tango and females doing the jive all the way through the show, then swap for the last two couples.
Just about everyone had major problems with the tango, it seems. Mario came closest to a proper one, but then scuppered himself by going off the reservation again, though not to such a great degree as last week. Vivieca was just OK in my book and I think her scores reflected the low quality of the other dances more than anything else. Harry did his best dance yet but still didn’t quite cut it, and Emmitt was just awful, sorry to say.
On the jive side of things, Monique blew the others away, IMO. Really enjoyed the compete abandon with which she dived into the start of her dance. Second I’d give to Willa; technically good but a bit anodyne for some reason. The rest, eh…Joey has chops but I didn’t much care for his routine, especially that handkerchief thing at the end.
The judges rightly are trying to rein in the obvious ringers for all the showy freestyle stuff, but will it make any difference with the audience? Seems highly unlikely Joey or Mario will get voted out. Jerry and Emmitt were by far the worst overall, but both seem to have huge followings so they’re probably safe for another week. Could be any of the rest who gets the axe. Flip a coin. For me, heads it’s Willa, tails it’s Sarah.
And it’s a two headed coin. Sara has a fan base, she’s not going anywhere. She could very well make the final 3.
For the tangos. Mario was the only interesting one…and at least it mostly looked like a tango this week as opposed to last week’s “what the hell?” dance. Is it just that I don’t like Vivica? But how were her scores so high? And why can’t she point her feet? (or at least not hyperflex them)
For the jives - all Monique. Joey 2nd, but the lifts. Sarah wasn’t as inhibited, she was just not energetic, and so her jive dragged, as did Willa’s.
I thought Vivica was decent, but her head position needs work. Instead of futzing around with her arms, the ballet instructor should have worked on getting her lift her chest.
I don’t think the judges would have come down so hard on Joey for the lifts if he hadn’t been right after Mario, honestly. Drew did both handstands and that assisted-jump tango thing that Emmitt did last season and they didn’t say boo.
Weren’t the judges in a snit last night? If they wanted to curtail bending the rules, they should give an automatic 5 point deduction for an infractions. That’d learn 'em.
I didn’t get all the mooning over Vivica Fox. It was good, but she wasn’t THAT good.
Mario danced great. I didn’t see his routine last week but I imagine that he should start following the rules or Len’s head might explode.
I was so glad to see Edyta paired with someone with real talent this time. I’m also glad that finally, FINALLY she ditched the odd cowl-neck outfits that she favors.
Ashley is so darling.
I see that they paired Cheryl with Emmitt Smith. Guess that guarantees that she won’t make it to the finals.
Joey Lawrence did really well. It’s hard to look masculine doing the jive and I think he pulled it off.
