"Dancing with the Stars" Season V

It all starts tonight, and I know I’m not the only person giddy with delight at the prospect. The lineup has been discussed here.

The only other bit of news is that Samantha Harris had a baby yesterday, and they’re being coy about who’s going to step in for her. I’m guessing Lisa Rinna – whaddya think?

Oh please not Lisa Rinna. >___<

And I’m not giddy, but I’ll be watching. After I finish Heroes of course. I at least have to see how bad Mark Cuban is.

Good news, it’s Drew Lachey!

Well, yee-haw, another season of my favoritest show EVAH. Thanks, as always, Twicks, for launching the thread.

Girls tonight, boys tomorrow, is it? Well, I didn’t get home in time for Garth’s routine, but none of the rest appeared too horrible. Of course, they seem to have salted the show with some fairly blatant ringers this time. Lotsa personality amongst the women too, maybe too much in a couple of cases.

Sabrina was by far the best out of the gate, but I suspect she’ll have some trouble with the slower stuff, and if she keeps trying to throw in hip-hop moves the judges are pretty sure to lay the smackdown on her. Scary Spice wasn’t bad either, but then she shouldn’t be, and and pairing her with Maks is a blindingly obvious move: the fur is sure to fly photogenically at some point. I’m gonna get really tired of Marie Osmond pretty quick, I think. The rest, mediocre; much as I’d like to see Jane Seymour do well, I suspect she’ll make a fairly quick exit.

Not that I swing that way, but most of the men look mighty pretty this time around. Well, maybe not so much Wayne Newton and his spray-on face, but his being on this show is just the sort of cheese that keeps me coming back.

AARGH! I forgot about this one until I was already in bed last night. I’ll have to set it up on TiVo today. Thank heavens they do that awful recap show for the first few weeks.

Stupid football! They delayed airing Dancing With the Stars until 12:30, long after I was in bed. My DVR watched for me. What did we ever do without a DVR?

StG

Yay! Back on the air!

Deja Vu with Maks and Brown. Didn’t we just do this last season?

Am I a bad person because I wanted to slap Sabrina in a recreation of the “calm down, get ahold of yourself!” scene from Airplane!?

As mentioned in the earlier thread, I have a decades-long crush on Jane Seymour, so I was looking forward to her dance with anticipation *and * trepidation.
According to Ree Hines at MSNBC :

And there was some satisfaction in seeing the ol’ gal blow the doors off the “surprisingly unfit” swimsuit model.

Interesting to see tonight how much of the macho posturing from some of the men survives their performances.

No, not bad at all. That’s one grating heap of excess personality.

Never having seen anything on the DisneyChannel…what is “Cheetah Girls”? I couldn’t tell if Sabrina is 18, or 40. Weird looking face.

Yay! My first WTF moment on song choices of the season – the *Bewitched * theme!!!

Yeah, blow me down, I had no idea that song had lyrics.

So, who’d y’all like tonight? Me, I’d say race driver guy, who also had the benefit of one of the two best choreographers of the bunch. Mayweather the boxer and Albert the model certainly gave, er, interesting performances, so could be in for the long haul. Cuban’s got a lot of work to do, and while I try not to think of the Scrooge McDuck billions he’s rolling in, I find it difficult to work up much enthusiasm for seeing him go on.

Looking at who may get the axe, I’m thinking Ms. Seymour, although it would be a bit unfair. Josie the (other) model and Wayne Newton are probably most deserving to go, but prettyness on the one hand and fan base on the other will most likely keep them in the running. Prove me wrong.

But Julianne and Helio made it work - I loved them.

From last night:
Jennie - ok. Good first attempt.
Josie - she was deceptively unfit. It showed
Sabrina - I really didn’t like the non cha-cha moves. If they had just stuck with cha cha like moves (even if her hands and feet were wrong) I probably wouldn’t have noticed and liked it. But they didn’t.
Marie - is a performer. Not a great dancer, but she played the crowd well.
Mel B - good.
Jane - opening with the fox trot really suited her. I can’t imagine her doing latin. But she looked lovely in that dance.

From tonight:
Cameron - really, really stiff.
Floyd - he just looked wrong. His body wasn’t working together, it was several separate pieces.
Helio - Julianne knows how to choreograph for her partners (she also looks like she grew up between seasons), they looked great - I really really loved it, in spite of the music.
Albert - that was weird. Did they ever actually cha cha or did they just do body rolls?
Mark - I have no idea who he is, but he looked like he enjoyed himself and was ok.
Wayne - also a performer.

OK, I think I’m in lust with Helio, the race car driver. He’s charming, good-looking, fun, and he did a nice foxtrot. The music surprised me, too, but I liked it and Julianne’s attempt at a nose wiggle at the end was amusingly bad.

I was amused by the “deceptively unfit” comment about Josie, and I’ve a feeling she’s the show’s cannon fodder – someone who doesn’t have what it takes and goes during the first few weeks. It makes sense. I’d rather see someone like her go than someone who has potential but not the votes. I don’t think she’ll go tonight, though, because I suspect people with the lowest scores get a lot of sympathy votes. From what I’ve seen, the couple with the second lowest score are more likely to be voted off than the couple with the lowest score.

Does anyone else suspect that pairing Cheryl with Wayne Newton was a way to make sure she didn’t bring home a third champion?

By the way, am I the only one who was bothered by Albert’s comment on Monday Night that this was the guys show? He seemed to be dismissing the women to me and put me off him. I’d put him down for going midway through the show. His routine was all right, but I don’t think he was top tier. Besides, now I have someone to boo.

It looks like a good group and it should be a fun season.

I don’t think prettiness in and of itself is going to work with this audience – Paulina P. was the first to go last season, and she was more gorgeous, better known, and not as much of a disaster as a dancer. Josie’s my pick for first to go.

And what’s with these freaking models as “stars”? Josie I’ve at least heard of, though I wouldn’t have been able to pick her out of a lineup – this other kid (fun and charming though he seems) – yikes, there was not a single athlete or actual performer anywhere in the country who would have been game?

ETA: Savion Glover is on tonight? swoon He is a god amongst tap-dancers.

Julianne Hough. Oh how I missed you lo these many months.

My favorite so far, going against all my biases about Disney and pop puff, is Sabrina. I’m just wondering how she can move like that - she’s built like a little bowling ball.

How can you not just love Jane Seymour?

Anyone notice when Julianne Hough’s brother tapped Jennie Garth on the ass during their routine? He’s gonna be tappin’ that before all is said and done. I hope her relationship with her husband is solid. (Of course, he might not swing that way.)

I’ve watched and rewatched what’s her name - Josie the model - a couple of times. Sure, it wasn’t fantastic, but I can’t match her performance up with the severity of the criticisms. I’m no fan of hers, but damn, that was just harsh.

Floyd Mayweather - he needs to break out of his hunched over, coming out strong in the third round posture.

I don’t know why, but I was pulling for Wayne Newton, and I was a little surprised at how tough it appeared to be for him.

I’m not pulling for Mark Cuban, and it looks like he’ll be a middle of the pack type guy.

Boy, Josie spent the entire evening looking like she was sitting on the bench in front of the principal’s office.

Really enjoyed Helio’s foxtrot.

Nope, not the only one.

Well, I’ve never seen more non-stars in my life, though I did enjoy the dancing.

I think Marie Osmond probably did the worst out of the women, followed by the model. Given that I’ve actually heard of Marie Osmond, and that she has charmingly self-depracating a la Jerry Springer, I think the model will go.

Wayne Newton just is too old for the dancing. It’s a real handicap for him. Well, that and his awful jet black hair. I’d rather see gray.

I was really surprised how they took a really hot male model (whatever his name was) and made him look like gay as a kite with that awful black outfit.

No surprises.

Thank God for Tivo.

Yeah – I was also pleased by the second-to-worst person.

Let’s just get through the next five eliminations quickly, shall we? (A full dozen contestants seems like too many to me, much as I adore this show.)

So, Week Two’s competition has concluded. Looks like just about everyone had trouble with the quickstep, and the mambo did few any favors as well. Best overall for me were Sabrina/Mark for the quickstep and, and I can hardly beleive I’m writing this, Marie and Jon for the mambo, not to mention Carrie-Ann’s “cougar” comment had me howling.

Gotta say, though, my personal faves that I’d like to see go all.the.way are Helio/Julianne and Jane/Mark. In the former case, Julianne once again set up the best choreography of the night, and although I didn’t thnk Helio danced as well as last week, he’s a gamer and seems like genuinely nice guy. As for Jane, she looked fabulous and had the best outfit amongst the celebs. Ok, so she wasn’t raunchy enough for pervy old Len; she’s 56 or thereabouts, fer cryin’ out loud.

At the bottom (again) seemed to be Mark and Wayne. These two just can’t cut it, and I hope they git gone pretty quick.

I mostly agreed with the rest being tightly bunched, none outstanding but some potential to be had, and most of them have rather engaging personalities, so it’s gonna be a real dice roll, I think, as to who stays in for the late rounds.

More classically weird musical choices: “Take on Me” and “99 Luftballoons” for the quickstep?

Not much else to say for now, except that Edyta should try to remember that Cameron’s not John Ratzenberger and she doesn’t have to dance around him.

It hought most of the men had issues with their hips. They’re just not moving down there. And Len notwithstanding, too many of them took the “quick” out of quickstep. I liked Helio because he had real energy. Marie showed a lot more sexy than I thought a Morman matron would. There are still too many competitors for me to sort everyone out. I should make notes during the performances.
