I was surprised that they didn’t take off more points for Jennie Garth’s routine, and her mishap, and particularly for that face she was making at the end. I presume that she was fighting back tears, but I couldn’t tell if she was in physical pain or just upset about what happened. I thought that their routine up to that point lacked energy, that she clearly missed some of the kicks that she was supposed to do, and she seemed to tentatively go into that running slide, or whatever it was supposed to be.
I thought Helio and Julianne did really well, although in watching it over a couple of times, it wasn’t readily apparent to me where was the great difficulty in the choreography that the judges were talking about (unless they were referring to Julianne). Damn, she is one hot, hot Mormon. Why is it that she looks like a woman, and her older brother looks like he’s just shy of getting his driver’s license?
Once again Sabrina tore it up. I thought for sure she was going to trip over that dress, and I thought the dress actually obscured some of her legwork.
The model dude - was I crazy, or was their footwork just way, way, way off? The judges didn’t seem to think so, but I thought in the middle of the routine that they were doing two completely different things.
I’ll be sad to see Kym go early, but I’ll be somewhat happier not to have to feel sorry for her having to work with the ball of sweat that is Mark Cuban during their preparation sessions.
Gee, I hope the clowns in the caveman outfits are there every week. And more Osmonds!
Okay, folks – I was out partying with the Garden Writers last night, and flying home from Oklahoma City tonight – yeah, it’s a giddy lifestyle – so I missed both shows this week.
I think I can infer a fair amount of what happened – but what exactly happened to Jenny Garth – and, most importantly – who’s gone?
Jennie did ok. I liked hers, until the very end where she slid under Derek’s legs and something went wrong, and he fell on her. They tried to recover, but she was fighting back tears in front of the judges (pain? embarassment? anger? couldn’t tell)
Helio and Sabrina are still the ones to beat.
Wayne is bottom two - Albert (the model with no fan base) is gone.
They saved the totally inappropriate music of the week for champion ballroom demonstration - “Girl, You’ll be a Woman Soon” tango.
During the results show, they showed the Count from Sesame Street tabulating votes and all I could think is “someone’s going to have to tango to ‘I count slowly, slowly, slowly getting faster…’ next week.” I wouldn’t put it past them.
Jane Seymour was missing from the show last night, due to “having recieved the devastating news that her mother had died” after Monday’s show. Aside from the tendency to roll my eyes at words like “devastating” when used by announcers on reality TV shows, because they so often use overly dramatic words, they handled it well. Jane was safe*, and will continue to be on the show as a tribute to her mother, who enjoyed watching the British version of Dancing with the Stars.
*in the in-show sense of not being in the bottom two.
Really disappointed in the results. Albert was a riot (loved him doing The Sprinkler in the background) and not a bad dancer. Wayne Newton brings absolutely no skills, no charm…just a big fan base.
Typing as I watch -
Sabrina & Mark: I still don’t like her. I don’t know why. But she is one of the stars who could really have done a fantastic jive (she has speed & power and precision) and the dance was all about him. What the hell was that with the flips and caterpillar… he should have shown her off, and he didn’t.
I don’t like him, either, it seems.
Cameron & Edyta: That’s my favorite Edyta dance ever. It wasn’t him standing still while she extended around him. But it wasn’t really tango-y.
Mark & Kym: he’s trying very hard. And compared to some past contestants, he’s not that horrible - but this is a tough year.
Jennie & Derek: I liked it.
Mel & Maks: she seemed to lose focus a few times. But when it was on, it was really good.
Wayne & Cheryl: It’s a ponytail. A ponytail.
Floyd & Karina: I didn’t get the jump rope. His posture bothers me. And so did the feet. But it was really, really close.
Jane & Tony: Nice.
Helio & Julianne: I like them. But he also seemed to lose focus from time to time. He’d come back, but there were down moments.
Marie & Jonathan: That last split. wow. And it was tango-y, and she looked great.
Must admit, I’m enjoying watching Cheryl try – and fail – to maintain a pleasant expression on her face during the interviews, etc. Heh. Yeah, sweetie, you really are good – but after a couple of silk purses, here, have a sow’s ear.
If America had any heart, it would let Wayne go now. He did his best and his best is pretty bad. All he did last night was pose while Cheryl danced around him (Hey! That’s Edyta’s trick!) Perhaps if he’d competed twenty years ago, he’d have shown those whippersnappers that he was more than a cheesy lounge lizard. But he’s simply too old. He seems like a really nice chap but he needs to go before he hurts something.
Cameron is too white for the show. He just doesn’t seem to feel the music.
Loved, loved, loved ** Floyd’s ** jump rope routine. Too bad he couldn’t have done that the whole time. I agree that he has a lot of potential; you could see how strong his legs were when he did that jump and squat.
Mark was okay, too, but not fantastic.
Sabrina did great. **Jane ** did great. Marie did great. Jennie did great. Mel did great. Helio did great.
I just can’t look at Derek without thinking [Simpsons’ pubertal teen voice]“I have to ask my manager.”[/Simpsons’ pubertal teen voice] Maybe it’s just the feathered hair?
It is past time to tell Wayne Newton danke shoen, auf wiedersehn.
Naw, he’s got way more personality. Still, though, he simply can’t dance and he really should be next to go, with Cuban right behind him.
Whether planned or not, and I imagine it was, the deck appears to be stacked in favor of the ladies this season. Just about all the females did well, with Marie (despite some scary face makeup) and Jennie being my faves. Much as I like Jane, I thought her tango was once again a bit reserved, and I feel like there was a bit of a sympathy score there.
On the male side, although Cameron is an actor, he doesn’t seem to quite get that he needs to do a bit more, you know, acting. Floyd showed much improvement this week, and if he keeps going like this could end up a serious threat to win. He may be in the best overall shape of the non-dancers, and he seems to be enjoying himself, so it seems like mainly a matter of posture. Helio, whether because of his bum ankle or because the jive just isn’t his kind of dance, didn’t get it done this week.
Really enjoying this season, except for one niggling little thing: the incessant shilling for ABC and Disney. Yeah, I know that’s always been a feature of the American version of this show, but it seems even more blatant than usual, for some reason. Cheetah girl, Hannnah Montana as our musical guest, now let’s pan for the umpteenth time across the casts of various ABC sitcoms, who just happen to be in the audience…aarrrgh.
Wayne is trying, which is a heck of a lot more than could be said for Master P. Unfortunately, you don’t win just because you try hard.
I thought that Mark doesn’t seem to understand that the point of being the pro is making your partner look good. I thought his dance was very selfish.
Cameron - well, I don’t remember his dance. I guess that says it all.
Floyd - Moves well. Still need more practice, though. And Len is right - you need to practice in the shoes you’ll be performing in.
Jane and Marie and Mel were all good. I thought it was a shame that (possibly) Jane’s scores are tainted by the sympathy factor. I’d like to see if she would’ve gotten those same scores had her mother not died.
Helio just didn’t have it last night, IMO. And the week before he seemed like a caricature of a latin dancer. The dance was good, just…over the top.
The judges were way out of whack last night, giving points where none were deserved and mouthing syrupy compliments instead of honest criticism. Jane and Tony’s dance was very emotional, but her head was way too stiff. She reminded me of a department store mannequin that had been rubber banded to Tony’s feet so he could move her around the floor.
Floyd is a manic-depressive dancer. By that, I mean he goes from being frantic to standing still while Karina does all the work. There is no rhythm or flow to what he does.
Wayne Newton is an embarrassment, but his weight loss shows. I feel for Cheryl! Mark Cuban is a close second in the embarrassment column. Poor Kym.
Cameron doesn’t know what to do with his free arm. It tends to stick out like a railroad crossing barrier. And I’m really tired of Edyta wearing one-sided clothes that look like they’re going to slip right off her.
Marie Osmond looks like a two-bit hooker; she should have serious words with whoever is dressing her and doing her makeup. She is lucky to have Jonathan as a partner because he tends to make the audience forget that she is not really dancing but mugging her way through her routines.
Helio and Julianne got robbed! Their routine was extremely complicated and they did it well. No way he should be that far down in the list; I think folks will save him however.
The Maks and Mel B. show was pretty hot. Loved Derek and Jennie’s tango. I think Derek is one little hottie and he’s paired well with her.
I CAN’T STAND SABRINA. I don’t know whether it’s her constant toothy grin, her cutthroat competitiveness or her extra poundage, but she just turns me off!
I can’t even predict who’s going home tonight, but I would pick Wayne, Mark, Floyd or Cameron.
Hey, I watched the pilot for Pushing Daisies last week. And, er, that’s about it. Anyway, guess that means Chi McBride will be showing up in the audience, any time now.
Having watched more children’s television than a person my age should, and filling in the rest with Googling and Wikipediaing, I can tell you that The Cheetah Girls was a made-for-TV movie based on a series of children’s books by Deborah Gregory. The cast of the film (minus Raven-Symone) also performs and records under the name “The Cheetah Girls” for Disney. Sabrina Bryan is 23, born September 16, 1984. Her appearance continues the tradition of having at least one person who works for a Disney subsidiary (ABC is one, of course) on the series, following in the footsteps of Trista Sutter, Kelly Monaco, Kenny Mayne, Monique Coleman, and Billy Ray “Hannah Montana’s Dad” Cyrus.
