"Dancing with the Stars" Season V

I never connected the Disney dots before. Interesting.

We also have whatshisname, the soap star, this season. All My Children is on ABC.

Er, that reminds me, seems like we got mighty close to seeing Julianne’s bottom when she stood back up at the end of her routine last night. Not that I’m watching for that sort of thing, of course.

The results show has aired on the East Coast!

Thank god! Wayne and his ponytail can go home! Plus we won’t have to watch Cheryl sulk any more. I think she needs to take a season off.

Well, she’s got almost the equivalent of that now.

Wow, if Cheryl’s eyes had rolled any harder while they were waiting to see who was voted off right at the end there, they would have fallen out of her head. I suspect she was more than a bit tired of having to dance her little tail off to hide the fact that her partner wasn’t (not that it worked, of course), but she still should keep that smile plastered on whenever the camera is on her. That’s one thing I’ll say for Edyta, even though I don’t like her costumes or her choreography – she never, ever loses that big smile. She could give all the rest of 'em smiling lessons.

Well, good. Unfortunately, it was a week too late. It would have been interesting to see how Albert would be developing had Wayne got the hook when he deserved it.

However, my faith in the voters is redeemed. It feels like they are actually interested in seeing good dancing rather than blindly following their faves. In one of the previous years Wayne may have lasted another three weeks.

Honestly, I don’t know where y’all get the impression that Wayne Newton has a large fan base. A lot of people have seen his show through the years but I doubt any of them have an emotional attachment to him or any other cheesy lounge lizard. I’m looking at you, Don Ho. Okay, maybe not because he’s dead now. But you get the idea.

My parents are of Newton’s generation and they wanted him to get the boot on week 1.

I’ve been wondering since I started watching partway through last year – how do they chose which pair does which dance each week? I know that there are two each week, and they repeat later, so if you keep on the show you eventually do the other dance from each week, but how do they pick?

Who put the bug up Carrie-Ann’s butt?

I wonder how they decide what dances the stars are going to do - the Viennese Waltz was far more suited to Jane that the Paso would’ve been, and the Paso far better for Sabrina.

I know many of you don’t like Sabrina, but I think she’s great. She doesn’t have a dancer’s body, but that compact frame has a huge amount of power, and she works incredibly hard.

Mark doesn’t look like he’s dancing - he’s walking to the steps. More or less.

Floyd was better, but I dislike all that posturing.

Cameron’s Paso was strong, but it didn’t do much for me.

Mel surprises me - she reminds me a little of Leila Ali, because she’s big (although not as big as Leila) and strong. I’m surprised at how well she’s doing elegant.

Jennie was good, but I don’t think she is who I thought she was, as faras acting goes. i don’t know who I’m thinking she was, though.

Jane personifies the waltz, and she seemed competant. I’m glad there was no sympathy carryover.

Marie seems to have a lot of fun. I’m surprised at how much I loke what they show of her personality. She might be a shrew in real like, but she seems like someone I could hang out with. Without the dolls.

Helio needs to tone down his personality a bit. He reminds me of Stanley Tucci’s Link character when Link would dance the Latin - all teeth.

Didn’t catch all the dances this week (stuck in traffic in the rain for three.freakin.hours) so will withhold comment.

Er, well, no; I thought Jennie did pretty good, and Cameron has finally figured out that you’ve gotta act a little. Too bad about the silly costumes and the Superman theme. Yeesh.

I’m actually liking Marie Osmond more and more; she dances pretty well and is absolutely ace with the one-liners. Good Lord, what’s happening to me?

Wish I’d have seen Jane’s waltz. Seems to me she would have nailed that one.

What I find truly mind-boggling is how each selection of music for the Paso is more hideously awful than the next. What on EARTH was that thing Jennie was dancing to? It truly impressed me that Derek managed to choreograph a decent Paso to that musical trainwreck.

And why did Carrianne decide to pick on lifts tonight, and for Jane, of all people? There have been blatant lifts being done all season. Either allow them all or don’t allow any, but for heaven’t sake don’t wait until the fourth week and the least visible lift to start complaining. She really had a bug up her ass tonight, didn’t she?

For some reason I didn’t enjoy tonight’s show quite as much. I think it’s because the Paso is my least favorite dance, all that ridiculous posturing. And how does a woman “be the cape”? (I keep thinking back to the first season of the Apprentice, and hearing Troy intone to Sam, “Be the hat, Sam. Be the hat.”)

She really did – it was rather bizarre.

Missed Sabrina’s dance (the phone rang at an inopportune moment) but caught the scores – was it really that good? (I’m guessing I will get another chance to see it tonight.)

Still digging Marie. I think she’s the perfect star to dance with (sic) – reasonably talented, no real training, no particular athletic chops, but good-natured and hardworking – and a lot of fun to watch. I hope she goes far (though doubt she can win it).

Yes, Sabrina’s paso really was that good. My husband mentioned that other than her extra pounds, it was hard to tell who was the pro last night (from a layman’s POV).

Did they say that last night was the first time they’d ever done the Viennese waltz in this show? That can’t be right…can it? Have they done some other kind of waltz? Or am I thinking of SYTYCD?

They’ve done a regular waltz, but not a Viennese. Remember last season how Jerry Springer said he wanted to stay on long enough to learn to waltz for his daughter’s wedding? I think the difference is that in the Viennese you’re not allowed to break hold at all. I think it’s faster than a regular waltz, too, with more turns.

I think it is time for Mark to go home. After that I am not sure.

I really want Floyd to go pretty far, he reminds me of so many of my students, but he maybe next if Karina can’t get him to quit leading with his chin. I loved his leap.

Sabrina is probably the one to beat. She just keeps getting better. I don’t think she really is carrying that much extra weight, she just is built kind of solid and is really short, so there isn’t anywhere to put it.

I love Cammeron. He even seems to be starting to really dance. I could probably sit and watch him change light bulbs, so what do I know.

Marie is a blast to watch. Whatever she is, she is an entertainer from the very top of her extensions to the tips of her toes. The dancing is growing, and I am hoping we see her for a while.

I am afraid the others don’t do much for me. Jenny and Mel are both good and so is Helio but none of them do a damn thing for me. Although it may be sacrilige to say, Jane doesn’t either. I am not sure why. I want to root for her. I want to be able to do half of what she does at 10 years younger, but still I just am not getting it.

They did an unscored group Viennese waltz once, but other than that, they’ve just done waltz, waltz.

I didn’t like Sabrina’s Paso - I thought it was too frenetic. Of course, that just might be because I don’t like her. Jennie’s was my favorite Paso of the night. Didn’t love any of the waltzes, didn’t hate them either.
Floyd just looks so odd - is it Karina’s choreography? Is it his posture (why doesn’t he have one of those hook things to teach him how to stand up)? Is it that he always looks like someone is about to attack him on the dance floor and he has to be ready with a right hook? It’s just strange.

Not in American style, and all of the dancers had plenty of openwork. The difference is the speed. Viennese Waltz is about twice as fast as the “regular” waltz (often called the “Slow Waltz,” in fact). Marie Osmond’s Viennese music was super fast - I clocked it at 64 MPM, while American style Viennese is typically 52-54. But she did so many slow hesitation steps that it scarcely looked like a Viennese Waltz at all to me.

Jennie was forced to dance the Paso Doble to the CANCAN number from “Moulin Rouge!” Can ANYONE figure that out?? I can’t.

Carianne was really, really crabby tonight, but I saw on TV that it was National Grouch Day, so maybe she was taking that to heart!

I, too, hated Sabrina’s paso doble. I don’t understand why she got three perfect scores. Her dress was hideously matronly and she seemed to galumph about the stage.

I thought Jane’s waltz was a thing of beauty. Helio grinned too much. Cameron was way improved. Marie had way too much hair. It weighted her down. Did I miss anyone?

Mark should go. Or Floyd. Then I’ll be happy.

Floyd’s posture aggravates the crap out of me, and he also seems to have no musicality or grace. I try to imagine a young Muhammad Ali on this show, and he would have put Floyd to shame. It’s not a boxer thing, it’s just a Floyd thing, I suspect.

I am also not a fan of Sabrina. Thus far, every single dance she’s done has appeared virtually identical in character; the steps may be different, but she just goes out hard and fast and tries to wow 'em with fancy footwork and a frantic tempo. Plus didn’t her dance last night end several beats after the music ended? How could she get 10s for being that far off? I truly don’t understand the judging.

Although I wish they’d give Len whatever he was taking last night more often; it was nice not to have him be so terminally cranky. Except, of course, for the fact that Carianne did it in his place. At least Bruno is always cheerful, if usually incomprehensible!

I want Floyd to go tonight. At least Mark has some grace, and is developing some footwork. Floyd just galumphs around. Not to mention threatening the judges “I’d better get some good scores!” is not exactly the way to America’s heart. Talk about a poor sport!
