Btw…one of the contestants (can’t remember…possibly Sabrina) did a Paso Doble to the music from Tyrone Power’s Captain from Castille…which is probably better known nowadays as the University of Southern California’s “most famous battle cry in college football…CONQUEST!” (that’s how their band announcer says it, every time).
Tonight’s show has aired on the East coast. Stop reading now if you don’t want to know what happened.
Well, phew. I think that was a good choice, though I got a bit nervous when Mark Cuban stayed in.
But Mel in the bottom two? WTF!
Sorry I didn’t get to see Sabrina’s paso – what you were all saying made me very curious. Guess I can find it online somewhere though.
Raphael Pungin’s website has most of the videos from all the seasons of DwtS. He hasn’t put Monday’s dances up yet, but they’ll probably be up on Wednesday.
I thought it was interesting that Sabrina didn’t get the repeat performance tonight. I wonder why that is? Since she got the perfect score, you’d think she would have been the one they asked back.
I loved that weird dance by Wade Robson and his group. He is so talented! And I also greatly enjoyed the Drew & Cheryl dance, even if it was cheesy Wayne Newton singing; to throw that together in 48 hours suggests that Drew is becoming quite the dancer, isn’t he? He’ll never be a pro, but he’s certainly comfortable out there on the floor. Even if Cheryl was doing most of the leading.
I was pleased with tonight’s voted off dancer, too. Although I agree: Mel in the bottom two, WTF? That truly stunned me; she’s one of the best dancers, IMO, even if she does have to dance with two partners, Maks and his ego.
I’ve been a bit distracted for the past couple of weeks, so I’m not up on who’s doing well. Still, I was surprised to see Mel in the bottom 2. Floyd and Karina didn’t look too suprised at the news. In fact, I kind of like the way he was bopping his head to the music as they stretched things out before giving the results.
I did see Sabrina’s paso doble, but I wasn’t that impressed by it. I think I’ll have to watch my tape and see what I missed.
Wade Robson’s choreography is always the best part of So You Think You Can Dance. Last night’s didn’t disappoint.
So in the first two weeks we’ve dismissed the 2 models; but then America gets his head screwed on correctly, and votes out the 2 worst dancers. This is an encouraging trend.
I was dismayed when I saw who was left after telling stupid Mark Cuban he could stay. I was relieved that it was Floyd though I enjoyed his dancing a lot more than Cuban’s or Cameron’s.
I’m glad that Len told the choreographers that no lifts were allowed in the future or they’d be marking them down. Maybe now CarrieAnn can focus on the emotion of the dance instead of being distracted by the technical side.
Wayne really, really needs to let his hair go gray or go to a professional colorist who can make it look more natural. Jet black just looks wrong on him.
I thought that the band singer did okay given that we were supposed to see Gloria Estefan. Next week is j.Lo. With all this credibility maybe next season we’ll actually see some contestants other than soap stars and models.
We thought that was interesting too. I’m guessing they thought that All Sabrina, All The Time might weary the viewers, and to interject the Big Comeback as the repeat would provide welcome variety.
And Wayne Newton singing–Holy Moley. He tours with that voice? The last time I heard him sing was on one of the Jackie Gleason shows in 1963 or 64, so I have in no way had him on my musical radar, but golly.
I liked Sabrina’s paso doble. She’s not my favorite by any means, but she has been the best dancer. I also found that I really liked what Cameron was able to do, and I thought Edyta’s move at the end was awesome.
I didn’t realize that there was a general rule about lifts. What the hell? What’s wrong with the moves that they had in there?
I didn’t think that Jennie’s paso doble was all that good, but the music sure didn’t help.
Maybe it’s a rule to protect the dancers from serious injury, though some dances have very specific elements (e.g. they cannot break the hold or they must lead with their heel) which they must not deviate from or Len will throw a hissy fit and take 2-3 points off the score.
From what I could gather from CarrieAnn’s comments, the dancers are not allowed to have both feet off the ground at the same time if they are aided by the other dancer. During the low swirly move (that’s the technical name for it), Jane had both feet off the floor for a second no matter how steadfastly she denied it.
Actually, it looked to me like her heel did stay in contact with the floor. It can be difficult to tell for sure with women’s shoes whether they are in contact - the heels are deceptive.
Cameron & Edyta were hot. Really nice dance.
Mel & Maks were also good.
Other than that - the only thing I wondered is whether Jane has had to do a fast dance yet? She seems to be getting all the slow, languid looking dances. Not that they’re easy, but I would have liked to see if she could samba.
She did. It was at the end of the dance while the judges were making their comments. One minute she was standing there anticipating; the next she collapsed. There was a bit of confusion, then they cut away to commercials. She was all right. Apparently she does this after phyiscal exertion sometimes. She still seemed a bit out of it, though. It didn’t help her scores either – she wound up with a 21.
Helio wasn’t as good as he has been, and Len told Edyta he was tired of her one-legged turns. It was a pretty good show. Mark Cuban’s samba was fun to watch, but he looks a bit heavy and clumsy sometimes. I think, like Floyd, he knows he’s not going to win, but he’s going to enjoy it while it lasts.
Mark is actually dancing now, as opposed to moving his feet in the manner he’s been taught. That’s a big improvement. All in all, last night’s dances didn’t do much for me except Mel B. Marie’s dress was enough to make anyone faint. It was horribly unflattering. Jane keeps doing dances that allow her to unfold like a lawn chair. Yes, she has good extension, but I was to see her move.
I wanted to take scissors to the tail of Jenny’s dress. If it had been a color other than yellow, it might have been different, but that yellow trailing bit just bugged me the whole time she was dancing.
Best of the night, IMO, was Cam/Ed, with Mel/Maks a close second. The judges seemed bound and determined to keep Mel out of the bottom two this week, however.
Most of the others left me cold. Helio can dance fairly well, but now he needs to learn how to act a bit. Sabrina’s power and energy seemed to work against her for this one; little too mechanical, it seemed to me.
I was really ogling Kym, spilling out of her ‘I Dream of Jeannie’ outfit. Guess I’m a nerd too.
ITA. And I was afraid that somehow that droopy tail was going to end up causing another “tragic” fall to the floor for that couple. Jenny also didn’t look like she was really into the dance until they were about halfway through.
Poor Maks and Mel to both be sick at the same time. . . and have to fly off to England in the middle of both being sick and prepping for the samba. I must say, their temporary recovery was stunning! Well done Double M Kids!
I absolutely adore Helio, but he’s disappointed me for two weeks now. Last week it was that omnipresent grin that was inappropriate. This week it was, I don’t know. . .a kind of clunkiness on his part that ruined everything Julianne was trying to accomplish.
Funniest line of the night was said to Jane: “You look like Edyta!” Meaning the dress-let, I presume.
Very scarey about Marie. She forgets to breathe???!!! That could be dangerous.
I hope Mark departs tonight, but I think it might be Marie unless she gets a ton of sympathy votes. (If she does, watch out for mass swoons in the future!)
