"Dancing with the Stars" Season IV

The final final final result:

Who would have thunk?

Yeah!!!

So how much of the end judging do you think is rigged? Didn’t they have perfect scores last year too, making it a popularity contest?

StG

I don’t think the judging is rigged, but I’m pretty sure the finalists would have gotten 10s for their final dances as long as they didn’t fall down.

Funny how I hardly remember any of the contestants prior to, oh, about the point where John Ratzenberger went off. Same thing happened to me in the previous series.

Anyway, thanks for the thread, Twickster. Catch ya next season.

I’m not thrilled, but at least Joey’s on the tour show. Which I do believe I might go see.

I’m happy that Apolo won. I think he and Julianne were the best dancers. The fact that she is just hot as the dickens doesn’t hurt either. Joey was so good, though, that I do feel a little bad that he didn’t win. Between the two of them, I would have been happy to see either one win, or better yet, a dead even tie.

Yeah, I agree – both excellent dancers. Where Joey started to lose me, though, was when he took to talking too much during the judges’ remarks – "what we’re trying to do here … " During the judges’ remarks, your role is to shut up and listen. That’s all.

Just out of curiosity – when they ran the show on tape delay on the West coast – did they bleep Laila’s “I’m pissed” remark?

Nope. Nor when Tom Bergeron asked if she was still pissed.

Didn’t have the endurance to watch all 9 concluding dances, so I’ll just say that Apolo Ohno is a deserving winner. This bears noting: Julianne Huff went to the whip early, WAY early, and he never missed a beat. Not a lot of amateurs can sustain that pace for that long, former athlete or not.

I see that Kelly Monaco is the official winner of the first contest (again). Good move. If the rules say the votes count for 50%, then they damn well count for 50%. None of this “stacking” or “unfair advantage” nonsense. Of course some people are going to have an unfair advantage; there’s no preventing this (remember Jerry Rice?). The fact is, more voters wanted Monaco to win than…that guy, and the win was rightfully hers. Grumble about how stupid or stacked this contest is (I sure have), but that’s just the way it is.

Y’know what, I’ve been thinking about it a while, and what I think this show really needs (besides this eliminate, eliminate, eliminate crap* that makes no sense in any contest where the contestants can’t vote against each other) are lots of special awards. Best dressed! Most congenial! Most lovable underdog! Surprise top 5! Funniest! Most daring! Most inspirational! Biggest fan favorite! And for crying out loud, if 2nd and 3rd place awards are good enough for the World Cup, they’re certainly good enough for DWTS. I don’t like the idea of these entertaininers working their hearts out for weeks only to leave empty-handed. C’mon, there can be some reward for their efforts.

Other than that…great contest. I can see it going downhill if nothing ever changes, though. Guess we’ll find out soon enough. (Oh, and of course, thank you for getting the ball rolling, twickster!)

  • Don’t worry, I won’t elaborate on it here. Definitely start a new thread. Which I probably should’ve done a while ago, come to think of it.

I voted for Apolo to win and think he was very deserving. Aside from sheer talent, he is engaging and confident without being obnoxious.

Joey was great, too, and deserved to be in the finals.

I was rooting for Laila, being a chick myself, but she blew it. Or maybe Maks blew it with the crappy choreography.

I’m not a fan of the elimination, however I do think some weeding out is necessary. Do fans really want to see Billy Ray or even Liza chug through the cha-cha again? No, they simply don’t have the natural talent for it. So get rid of them early.

How I’d improve the show?

a) Mix up the pairings. It’s not fair that Apolo got Juliane week after week and poor John was stuck with Edyta. That would require voting off a man and a woman each week, if they simply must do the elimination thing, but at least it would even out the talent a little bit. Had Laila gotten Heather’s choreographer she might have won it.

b) For the love of tango, can we PLEASE cut out the filler! When I saw that the finale was TWO HOURS long, I DVR’d it. Via ff, I saw that Laila was eliminated first and then saw the winner announced. . That was frankly all I was interested in.

c) Improve the camera work. Quit switching angles so that the viewer loses the flow of the dance. I’d rather view the entire dance through a long lens than a series of tight, disjointed shots.

d) When Len says that someone didn’t point his/her foot, it would be nice if he could show us what he means a la John Madden. Slow the film down, and circle where his/her arm was off.

e) Compare apples to apples. Assign the tango to everyone and let’s see how they do. I realize some dancers showcase the woman part more and it’s a disadvantage to have an amateur measured against a professional, but I think we (the viewers) can handle it.

f) Compare apples to apples, take 2 - At least in the later rounds, give all the dancers the same music. I think that would very interesting to see how the choreographers interpret the music differently.

I really think Leila’s biggest handicap was Maks. he choreographed the routines so he looked good, not his less-trained partner. And I really don’t think they like each other much.

DKW - Apolo (yes, he spells it wrong) is still a competing speed skater. One week he had very little time to practice because he was competing in the world championships. He took Julianne with him (as I recall) to practice when they could.
