"Dancing with the Stars" Season IV

Hmph. There’s no way that Laila’s quickstep deserved the same score as Apolo’s.

Whew, delirious, I am. I love this show to pieces.

I’ll just lean to say that after having seen most of three of the US (and two of the British) series, this was the most entertaining single ep of DWtS I’ve ever seen. I really don’t think the judges should have handed out so many 10s, but there was something pretty near to great from every one of the couples tonight, in at least one of their dances.

Top two for me were Apolo’s quickstep and Joey’s jive, with all the others bunched pretty evenly, except for Ian’s first effort, which he at least made up for with his Elvis impersonation. I’d say the 10s for that one were mainly for the glaring contrast with all tight-assed dances he’s done up to now, but it still held up pretty well against the others. Apolo’s (well, for me Julianne’s) cha-cha really torched the place from a hotness standpoint, but it seemed a bit of a mess nontheless

I’m assuming the couples chose their own music this week, as some of the choices seemed almost, dare I say it, inspired, like "Walk Like an Egyptian " for Laila’s ballroom round.

Everyone looked pretty worthy tonight, but based on overall body of work, I’d still say Ian seems like the one to go, and that’s despite my raging crush on his partner.

Apolo & Julianne were awesome on the first dance and they torched the place on the second. Whew! 3 votes.

Thought the judges were easy on Laila. She was good but not up to Apolo’s level, IMO. 1 vote

Joey did great, and he is very charismatic, but physically he’s at a disadvantage. He still looks like a dancing bear, albeit a very entertaining one. 1 vote

Ian has improved and I thought their tango was great. But it’s just too little too late. Besides, Cheryl has won twice. It’s time for him to go. 0 votes

Apolo and Julianne had to know that Len would respond like that to their cha-cha. They were the best couple again, but Joey wasn’t far behind. His jive was outstanding.

I like Laila, but it really is hard to honestly say she’s doing as well as Apolo and Joey. I think I may have gone back to rewatch her mamba once or twice, but that’s it. In contrast, I love rewatching Joey’s and Apolo’s dances. They are outstanding.

I thought that Ian’s Elvis dance was an awful mess. Shows what I know, I guess. I don’t think there’s any way to say that it was the equivalent of any of the other dancers performances tonight.

I’ve got some problem voting. I often get a busy signal, odd messages and other problems when I try to call in. I was only able to register two votes!

Damn, not only did my third (!) post here last night not register, but I couldn’t get through online to vote. Hmph and a half. (The polls may still be open online – I’ll check after I’m done here.) Joey regained my love, if not my unquestioning allegiance, with the jive last night – that was frickin’ phenomenal, so my intention is to vote three times for Joey, and twice for Apolo. It’s time for Ian to go home, and though Laila deserves to be in the final three, she doesn’t deserve to win. (As someone – Carrie Ann? – observed last night, she’s at a disadvantage as the only woman: she’s being compared, not entirely fairly, to three professional women, who are all doing fancy moves she just doesn’t have the years of training to do. I like her, but I don’t love her – and Maks is an asshole.)

Yes, the ABC web site is still accepting votes this morning. Go Joey!

Thanks for the reminder! I snoozed out on the couch after TDS and forgot to vote. I just sent in 4 for Joey and 1 for Laila. I love Joey to bits but keep thinking that it’s time a woman won DWTS and Laila’s great.

Apolo is ok but I can’t stop thinking he’s too low to the ground; I don’t see elegance in his ballroom dances.

(Just making sure that you knew that Kelly Monaco won S1. I didn’t watch it then but a lot of people think that John O’Hurley won.) In any event, I’m rooting for Laila, too, but just don’t think she’s as good as Apolo. I do believe she’s on par with Joey, though not nearly as charasmatic.

I know! And I hate myself for wanting to screw that smirk right off his face.

Wow, online voting is still open – I was just able to cast my votes. I guess they’re just not as particular with DWTS as they are with other voting shows. Since there’s nothing on the line but that gorgeous mirror ball, it’s not surprising.

Apolo and Juliane definitely have amazing dance chemistry, IMO more than the other couples, although Joey and Kym are close behind. And Laila is just so gorgeous! I still remain convinced that even if Ian were the best dancer there, he wouldn’t win simply because the judges and producers don’t want Cheryl to win three times in a row. Certainly, in terms of choreography, Kym and Juliane are giving her a run for her money. Maks is definitely the weakest choreographer left, and even though he’s got a great ass, he has a tendency to badly out-dance his female partners, making them look worse than they actually are.

I think Ian will go tonight, too. But as for who will win? I really don’t know, although I think it’s between Apolo and Joey.

I did – and though she “won” the last-show-of-the-season competition, the voting was seriously skewed by her rabid soap fanbase – to the extent that audience outrage necessitated a dance-off a month or so later, which John O’Hurley won, making him the Official Season One Champ.

And it also resulted in a variety of changes in how the scoring takes place, to prevent a tie (there are now three, not two, in the finals), and to prevent total audience overruling of the judges’ votes.

The results show has aired on the East Coast.

Oh phew.

That’s just cruel! I’m watching in Colorado, hoped I could “outguess” my wife, maybe win a bet and get a little sumpin’ sumpin’ in the bargain … drat!

No spoilers from me, either! Except that I was very relieved Ian wasn’t wearing that idiotic Elvis wig tonight.

Okay, I’m confused. I’m in Mountain time zone, we’re into the “live” portion of the show. Is this thing really live, or was it only live for the East Coast?

Thoughts in no particular order:

One thing I really appreciated this time was the level of competition. No one at any point completely stunk up the joint. Even Billy Ray Cyrus wasn’t horrible, just mediocre and out of his league. And this has to be the closest final four I’ve ever seen. It could’ve very easily been a four-way tie in points. This pretty much cemented this show as the most entertaining reality program to watch…not keep up with, speculate about, or make grandiose statements about, watch. Don’t be surprised if this outlasts Survivor.

Anyone else think Joey Fatone being in the bottom two was really overplayed? Okay, first off, the important thing was supporting Ian Zeiring so Billy Ray Cyrus would get outta there. That’s it. That meant giving a lot of votes to Ian that might’ve gone to Joey. Someone had to be bumped down to fourth, and it was Joey. To that, I say BFD. Look, how many times have I said this, there’s rock bottom and there’s everyone else. Placement means nothing before the very end. Furthermore, this “Bo Bice scare” couldn’t have come at a better time for Joey, giving him a big groundswell of support right at the time when it matters the most.

If I had to rank the four, I’d put Ian at the bottom, but by the slimmest of margins. He’s been steadily improving week by week, everything came together for the final four, and he deserves to be in the final as much as anybody.

Say who’s out? Eh, I can wait. In the meantime, a question. Is the final going to be 50% points and 50% votes like all previous rounds? If it is, I can go ahead and start making my calculations on the chances the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points getters have of winning. (Hey, I always wanted to do that!)

I personally like Anton over Joey. In watching their performances this week Joey, while very entertaining, often had a hunched over style (which Len pointed out to him). Whereas Anton keeps his frame very well as well as having great footwork and winning personality. Although I must admit I really admire Laila, the girl’s part is so much harder to pull off I think and she has done a magnificent job. All that being said this has really been a fantastic season, many good dancers and choreography.

It did seem the judges were throwing around the 10’s rather liberally Mon. nite. If everyone gets 10’s doesn’t the judging become redundant? Save the 10’s for the truly spectacular.

Well, at least two of the dances – Apolo’s quickstep and Joey’s jive – were truly spectacular. IMHO.

They often do a re-cap show right before the live results show. That has confused me a time or two as well.

I believe you get a “tape-delay” version of the show that aired live for the East Coast.

For anyone who missed it, Ian is out. Damn shame, as he put on a hell of a show; easily his best two dances of the entire competition. Unfortunately, there comes a time when even “nearly great” isn’t enough.

He had a fantastic attitude going out and didn’t put any more importance on this silly contest than it deserved. It was a pleasure having him along for the ride.

(On an unrelated note, if I never, ever see Master P ridiculed on this show again, whatever the reason, it’ll be too soon. For crying out loud, it was the second contest. UFC wasn’t free of hopeless scrubs in its second contest (or its eighth, for that matter). When you have a radical new program, it takes time to find people who are up to it. He got on, he stunk it up, he left. Move on!)

Okay, calculations, calculations…ABC.com doesn’t have an explanation of the scoring, so I’m just going to assume fan votes are the tiebreaker (not as much a problem with 3 finallists as 2). Mmm, next post; this is going to take a bit.
