"Dancing with the Stars" Season V

According to the link that twickster gave a few days ago, the judges give tonight’s score - but then it’s recombined with last night’s voting. So while the judges vote last, I’m guessing that once again, their votes will be close enough that it’s really the audience that determines who wins or who loses.

So far, from all the seasons, the only freestyle I’ve ever liked was Drew & Cheryl’s “Save a Horse” dance. The rest have been weird or bad, in all seasons. (I also miss the one year they had all the dancers do a routine to the same song. That was a good idea. They should bring it back.)

Last night’s, M&M’s was way too much Maks, way too little Mel, and about half of the time, one or the other of them seemed off.
Marie & Jonathan’s, like Bruno - I don’t know what it was, nor how to score it. I kept thinking “maybe it’s supposed to be like Coppelia - the Rolling Stones version.” The big problem, though is that whatever it was, it wasn’t finished or polished yet.

Helio and Julianne lift after lift after lift - and while they were cool (the cartwheel thing was awesome) there wasn’t enough in between them (for me).

Still voted for Mel and Maks based on past dances.

I didn’t get to see it until tonight, but I was shocked at how lame Mel’s freestyle dance was. She would have been better off just doing another paso doble. And, it’s pretty much the harbinger of doom when they start out with chairs. Why is that?

Who in hell thought it would be good for Marie to spend half the freestyle pretending to be a doll that can’t dance. Sure, it’s quite appropriate for her to act wooden and stiff, since she really is, but why accentuate that in the final dance?

What really pissed me off is that Carrie Ann scored Marie’s freestyle only one point lower than she did Helio’s. Really? Were they honestly that close, Carrie Ann?

For me, somewhat surprisingly, last night Helio was the best dancer.

[By the way, Siege, did you realize that they replayed last night’s show at 9:00 this morning for those of us here in the 'burgh?]

I seem to recall telling you that back in post 168. Unfortunately, I just fired up my VCR and found out I didn’t turn it off before I left, so I didn’t record it, after all. I suppose there’s footage on-line, though.

Since they’ve got two freaking hours to kill tonight, I’m guessing we’ll see quite a bit of last night’s action.

Ended up watching the whole show, which I wasn’t planning to.

And, in retrospect, I’m not entirely sure why. Overall, this was a pretty damn blah season – the least deserving final three so far. Compare Helio, as champ, to, oh, forget Apollo, Emmit, and Drew – how about Joey or even Ian? Marie totally didn’t deserve to be in the finals, and her petulant reaction Monday to having that ever so gently expressed was unbecoming. I’m really not sure why Helio won, because clearly Mel and Maks were overall more deserving, despite their choreographic mishmash in the freestyle.

Hmph. Not a very good season – they better come up with some seriously better contestants next season. Surely there’s another boy band member out there needing a gig? A Disney-endorsed teenage girl of some sort?

I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to see Mel or Helio win in the end.

I was hoping that Helio would take the trophy and hand it to Sabrina.

I agree to the overall blah-ness of this season. And I’m very disappointed that Helio took it over Mel. And Marie? A legend in her own mind. My sister had the idea that maybe she threw the dances on Monday, because she knew she didn’t deserve to win. I think Marie’s a tough competitor who would’ve happily taken the trophy even though she’s obviously the least-accomplished dancer of say …the top six.

StG

We watched the whole thing too (thanks to the miracle of Ti-faux). And surprisingly, it wasn’t that bad, as far as padded results shows go. At least Tom bought the funny.

Samantha, I will continue to defend you, because (a) I’m sure live TV is hard, and (b) your occasional flubs are funny. But when people are talking you should keep that microphone thing in front of them until they finish a sentence at least. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s funny watching the old dancers do their thing, because I immediately realize how little I miss them. Especially Sabrina. I know lots of people love her and think she should have gone all the way, but I can’t stand watching her dance. Like Lenny said, everything is so hard. Last night her arms were swinging around with such force it looked like she was fighting off invisible ninjas. Compare her dancing to someone like Mel B and you can see a huge difference. Mel manages to move just as fast, but there’s a softness to it that Sabrina can’t get close to achieving.

I’m happy with the final results, even though I was slightly pulling for Mel B. I think Maks blew it for them with that lame freestyle. And I gotta say, I’m impressed that Helio and Julianne pulled it off. After the first episode I had him pegged to go out pretty quick, if only for the fanbase problem. They must have picked up a huge number of votes over the course of the season.

I caught the last hour but I haven’t really watched much this season except for the recaps on the local affiliate news station. I heard Carrie Ann talking about Marie’s sass and how it’s not acceptable. She had her time to shine in the dance and the critique is the judges turn. I think making it as far as she did may have gone to her head. I think Marie went through a lot personally during this season and I give her props for handling it all but she should realize that it’s her popularity that kept her there and not her dancing skills.

I figured she was eliminated first but I don’t recall seeing her in the audience after that and I thought the third to last out always went to sit in the audience. Did she leave? Or did Tom just avoid talking to her again in the second hour? So what do you all think of talk that Marie’s fainting spell being fake?

I was rooting for Mel B there at the end, even Carrie Ann said she was technically the best dancer.

I was slightly disappointed that Helio won–but I mostly wanted Mel B to win so that a woman would win the show for a change.

While Marie is (generally) a savvy enough performer to believe that no attention is bad attention, I doubt strongly that she faked her fainting spell. And if she did fake it, I don’t want to know it.

I insert the generally, because she didn’t seem to understand why people didn’t care for her freestyle. Which, in my opinion, at least, was NOT the costuming or the conception, it was the execution. (With a strong pinch of the costuming didn’t help, and the conception of being a rag doll that couldn’t dance was not a great idea). But still, being a dancing doll would have been ok if she’d been a dancing doll who danced with some zip.

This is slightly off-topic, and more related to Monday’s show than the Results extravaganza…but what is the problem with Victoria Beckham? Does she ever show any emotion, or is she some sort of fem-bot?

The other Spice Girls are whooping and clapping and cheering…and she’s (Posh, right?) doing a little golf clap, with a face like someone ran over her dog.

Well, that was a relief. I almost turned it off when they announced Marie in third, because I really didn’t care who won after that.

I’d forgotten how good Alberto was. It’s too bad he didn’t have a fanbase - he, Mel, and Sabrina could have been a much more worthy final.

This season didn’t do much for me. I much prefer “So you Think you can Dance.” Either this is a dance competition or it isn’t. It is interesting to watch people learn to dance, but the judging should not be a popularity contest, which it was. Next season they will probably have the contestants speak for three minutes each on how they would accomplish world peace.

What, you don’t like world peace?

Mel B lost? Boo.

Bah, ultimately a rather disappointing season overall. I don’t have that much of problem with Helio winning, but jeez, Mel was clearly better overall and it’s about damn time a female won. Unfortunately, though, the audience voting historically seems to swing to sports figures in the final rounds. I don’t know, maybe the audience feels dancing is more natural to the entertainment types, that the sports types have had to work harder and therefore are more deserving. Or something.

Also, apropos of nothing in particular, I’m getting more than a bit tired of the judges. At the very least maybe they could add a fourth panelist, as is the case on the original (British) version. Keep Len, though. I really enjoy his incessant harrumphing about one thing or another.

Bummer about Mel but I thought Helio was cute and charming. I Tivoed it do I missed all the filler.

I saw that too. She just looked like a major bitch to me.

Heh. I was thinking “How did Mel end up as ‘Scary’ Spice? Posh is way scarier.”
