"Dancing with the Stars" Season V

What was that Mambo thing Marie and Jonathan did? Ugly costumes. Ugly dance moves. And back to mugging like Carol Burnett. Marie, you’ve regressed, not grown. Get yourself gone, girl!

That cha cha last night by Jenny was the first time I’ve really thought she performed well. (I know it’s old news, but what was that green monstrosity that she had on last week? It didn’t fit with the music, theme, Derek’s costume…). She’s just too emotionally fragile, and Derek seems to be really clingy and hands-all-over-the-place with her in a very creepy way while they are standing around. Speaking of which, I was predicting that she and Derek would be humping before very long, and my wife last night remarked that she hadn’t seen any shots of her husband. I don’t recall him being in any of the video from Disneyland. I hope she goes home tonight.

I think Mel is a better dancer than Helio, and should win, even though I like Julianne. I also didn’t quite understand how much love Helio’s dances got from the judges last night.

Mel seemed rushed and a bit irritated at the start of her paso - I wonder what happened. That outfit certainly highlighted her features - it made me more impressed with her dancing, as top-heavy as she appeared to be.

Marie seemed perplexed at the idea that she missed some steps, but if she didn’t, then Jonathan did, because there were some points that they were just all messed up.

It seems like the Mendoza line has crept up during the course of the season, from 7’s, to 8’s, and last night, 9’s.

Was Len singing “Sexyback”? Sure, it’s a bit funny, but I didn’t get why Maks and Tom found it quite as funny as they did.

Results show is currently airing on the East Coast.

And, before it’s even over, I just want to say

what the fucking hell is Marie doing in the finals – and why the fucking hell did they announce that first!!!

Michael Flatley is such an asshole he must drive a Hummer.

Ah, shit. We knew it was coming, but she should have been in the finals, not Marie.

Grrrrrrrrr.

Well, at least Sabrina had a chance to poke her thumb in the voters’ eye and say, “see what you’re missing next week?”

And WTF with the naval outfits on Flatley’s dancers?

And I still don’t like the way she dances. I’d rather have Marie.
Which, I do.

They should make Kenny Mayne the permanent color commentator.

Hentor and I are going to be cruelly deprived next Monday night. You see, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be playing the Miami Dolphins on Monday, so Dancing With the Stars will air on Tuesday morning at 9 here. The morning news said we’ll be allowed to vote, but my employer would prefer it if I came into work instead.

What amused me on Monday night was that Len told the stars some of the same things we hear in dance practice – don’t look down, mind your footwork, mind your posture. It is basic stuff, but looking down is tempting, especially when you’re not sure what you’re doing.

When I learned Sabrina was gone, it didn’t surprise me, but I’d forgotten about Marie. Sabrina still wasn’t as good as the other two, though.

I’m torn. I like Helio, but Mel is also very good and I’d like to see a woman win. Either way, next week’s final should be fun to watch. All I have to do is remember to tape it.

I’ll agree that Michael Flatley is probably not someone I’d like to have over for dinner. Maybe I’m just a sucker for cheeze…but I really love his stuff.

Once we got rid of Wayne Newton, this has turned out to be a really entertaining season. And everyone seems to be having a ton of fun, even Maks. Mel is just a hoot – I love her to death, and hope she takes it.

The season finale is tonight. Here (cursor down in “About the Vote” box) is info on scoring. Tonight is, I believe, freestyle.

Go Mel and Maks!

Not spoilery -

Okay, if I never again see Marie Osmond in a babydoll dress that will be too soon. And how many times in one day can she mention that she’s a doll designer?

StG

Okay, if you’d told me 25 years ago when Tattoo You came out that one day I’d watch Marie Osmond dancing to “Start Me Up” on TV in a baby-doll dress, I’d have … sigh, asked for another hit on the bong, probably.

Most lackluster finale ever.

I voted for Mel 4x based on prior performance.
Voted 1x for Helio.

We shall see.

OK, so apparently I wasn’t alone in thinking those were about the most naff dances for the finals since I began watching the series (missed season 1).

Of the first round, Mel’s came off as clearly the best technically, but nineish scores seemed fair for that one. Marie’s, as usual, was a bit of a mess. Helio’s was OK, not amazing-amazing.

Everyone seemd to have great problems with the freestyle round. Mel’s was, as one of the judges said, a bit disjointed, the whole Marie-as wind-up doll thing was spectacularly cheesy even by the standards of this show (Jon’s just not the best at choreo, I’m afraid) and Helio made a balls-up of the lifts, not to mention his Major Tom spacesuit was hideous, and I felt the judges were far too generous in giving 9-10-10 for that one.

Hope at least one of them can get off a decent turn for the last round tomorrow night. Regardless, I’m pulling for Mel B, based mainly on her body of work throughout the competition.

I was seriously dissappointed in the Freestyle competition. Mel’s had some nice tricks, but didn’t show off her dance skills. Marie had a silly, silly costume, and danced incredibly limply. I did enjoy Helio’s–he seemed to spend the most time dancing (or at least walking around to the music) and not just posing.

Mel seemed to have left a good bit of dancing off, like starting in the guy’s lap when Maks was dancing. She has the chops to dance the entire thing, why not have her dance from beginning to end?

Marie was just awful, then so belligerant when they told her so. She really seems to think she belongs up there talent-wise, rather than the popularity contest it is.

Helio was okay, but still at the same level he’s been at throughout the competition.

Such a pathetic finale.

StG

Precisely the word I was searching for. And the judges seemed to agree, bringing out the “7” paddles for the first time since Mark Cuban left.

Apparently Maks spouted off to the media that he thought Marie didn’t deserve to make the finals (well, duh)…I was hoping Marie would find a way to knee him in the groin at some point, but it didn’t happen.

Helio’s partner is just so wholesomely hot I can’t stand it. That 50’s style skirt really showed off her legs.

I only saw the clips on the morning news since Dancing With the Stars was pre-empted here, but the clips I saw showed Marie missing steps and generally looking a bit clunky and clumsy. It’s one thing to be constantly having to adjust your footing early on, but I do expect better in the final. Maybe her baby doll routine was better as a whole, but I really wasn’t impressed.

Acc. to Yahoo:

Judges’ scores are combined with viewer votes to determine each couple’s standing. After the third-place pair is eliminated Tuesday, the remaining duos will perform one last dance – their favorite of the season. The judges have the final say.

So I doubt Marie will take the final prize. If she makes it past the audience vote, I can’t imagine any of the judges giving her a win over either Helio or Mel.
