"Dancing with the Stars" Season V

My jaw literally dropped. What on EARTH? Okay, this show is really strange anyway, but that was the craziest result show ever!

I did like the way everyone else circled around the ousted pair and effectively shielded them from all eyes, including the cameras, as the show went out, though. That was really sweet.

I’m gobsmacked. I just didn’t see that. The judges looked like they’d been poleaxed.

StG

Shoo, it looked like the judges jumped out of their seats in confusion. They all did something together tonight!!

This is the way to keep folks tuning in! And I’m not at all unhappy.
Let the dancing continue! (But no more Barry Manilow, please. And Louis and Cheryl scare the heck out of me when they dance; too much sharp quickness. They’re dangerous!)

Wow, that’s bullshit. I’m not a big fan of hers or anything, but she was clearly the best dancer. It’s this kind of stuff that will make me not watch the show anymore. I don’t want to see a show like this where Marie and Jane could be dancing in the finals simply because they got more popularity votes than everyone else.

One of the things that bugs me about the show is how they have Tom and Samantha talking about “surprising results” all through the evening in cases like this. That means a favorite has had the kiss of death, so when Sabrina was one under the red spots, I knew, oh shit, that she was toast. Why telegraph the punch line this way?

As much of a Jane fanboy as I am, either she or Marie should have gone. But fan votes are weird–witness Stacy Kebler exiting before the finals, or Master P lasting an interminable number of weeks.

Well, that’s this season’s reminder to vote. I don’t think she had much of a fan base to begin with, and I’m willing to bet a lot of people assumed she was safe and didn’t bother.
But Jonathan and Anna were absolutely beautiful.

Yeah, I haven’t been voting recently – guess it does make a difference, eh?

I only started watching this show about half way through last season which, not coincidentally, was when I hooked up with my girlfriend. I normally don’t care for reality shows but this one wasn’t all that bad and I actually got to the point where I was looking forward to DWTS each week.

No more.

I was and am irrationally pissed off about this. That Hanna Montana guy going a little further than he should have last time over people who were better but weren’t going to win anyway was one thing. This was fucking bullshit.

As I saw it, Sabrina, Mel B and Helio were top of the class. Cameron and Jenny were second tier with the possibility of moving up. Jane and Marie were well behind. Sabrina was my favorite from Day One.

I already told my girlfriend that she can watch the show on her own. My boycott starts now.

Any before anyone asks, I didn’t fucking vote and I don’t want to hear about it. We TiVo the show so we can blaze through the commercials and the voting is over before we’re done watching.

Nah, they talk about the “surprising elimination” every week, including when everyone knows who’s getting the axe.

I guess I’ll have to pay closer attention; confirmation bias perhaps? But I couda sworn . . .

I’ll confess that I haven’t voted at all this season. And I blame the producers. With all the filler they put into these shows, I simply cannot stand to watch it in real time most nights so I DVR it. By the time I watch it, it’s usually too late for me to vote.

I’m amazed that Sabrina got voted off before Jane or Marie. Oh well, that’s the way the ball bounces in these type competitions. It’s still enjoyable to watch, but I really do think that it’d be just as enjoyable without the B, C, and D list celebrities anyway. Just pick up 10 people off the street and let’s see how they do. Ooh, ooh! Pick me to pair up with Maks!!

I sometimes watch the first episode of the week where they actually dance as my wife and I dance and can appreciate how quick some of the stars pick up the steps. But how do they get away with the results show? One hour of commercials for commercials. If I’m curious who got booted off I either look here, or watch the last two minutes. What is the point of having judges if this is just a popularity contest?

I have to say that she was very gracious in her “loser” speech. Considering how young she is, and she that couldn’t’ve been expecting it. It shows poise and class to be so sweet at such a moment. Then I compare that to Marie and Jane complaining to the media. And I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who wondered if Jane’s “suspected food poisoning” was really a case of not wanting to be in the red spotlight when word came she was eliminated.

StG

You weren’t. As I said, I still haven’t had a chance to catch up with Monday’s show, but I did wonder about her absence last night since I thought she’d be the one to go.

Okay, folks, remember to vote this week!

I voted! (Do I get one of those flag stickers to wear? Or will it have to be a cheetah paw tat?)

As far as big improvements go, I enjoyed watching Jennie dance this week. Mel scorched the floor boards, yikes. Surprised myself by really enjoying Marie’s Jive. Helio seemed to have plateau’ed early in the season; somehow it doesn’t seem as impressive as Jennie and Cameron’s improvements.

This week’s results show has a hard act to follow, obviously.

I split my votes between Jennie and Mel – their two Latin dances were the best two of the evening, IMHO.

Thought Mel and Maks’ Paso was awsome, though Maks’ leather vest seemed too small for him and it was distracting.

Jane is, indeed, very elegant, but all her dances look and feel the same. She just seems incapable of channeling her inner skank and her dancing suffers. I don’t want to see a sanitized Latin dance, thankyouverymuch.

Marie has done much better than I ever thought she’d do, but I was worried about her after her 2nd dance because she was sucking for breath again and got that funny look in her eyes. She’s cute as a button, but I’m afraid she’s not in good enough shape (or perhaps she has a physical ailment) to compete with the rest of them.

Jennie has come on strong these last couple of weeks and I really enjoyed her last number a lot. I hope she can continue to combat her nerves and focus on feeling the dance.

I agree that Helio has already peaked. He had a lot of natural musicality to begin with, but I haven’t seem him improve at all. Compare him to Cameron, who was really stiff in the beginning but got much better in latter weeks (last night nonwithstanding). Helio started out strong and is now no better or worse than he started.

So who should go? Jane. She’s gorgeous and elegant, but she’s a one-trick pony. Or Helio. He’s great, but once you’ve seen one of his dances, you’ve seen them all.

Yeah, Mel’s Paso Doble was the class of the night. Gotta laugh at Maks the Ego. He sounded cocky as hell when he said it was gonna kick ass, but by damn it did.

Helio really seems to have plateau’d. Earlier I had him pegged for the finals, but now I’m not so sure.

I suspect Jane is toast for this week, however. Good as she looks stylewise, she just can’t seem to cut loose like some of the younger folk.

Bergeron got some pretty good zingers off last night. I particularly enjoyed the little swipe at Samantha (“oh, sorry, I tuned out for a minute there”), and his comeback after Len made his gratuitous Bush remark (paraphrased: “Don’t worry, Len, you only upset 33% of the viewers”). Hah.
