Hmm, never noticed. Funny how different people notice different things.
Priscilla seemed very clumsy this week, and I think it’s time for her to go. She’s shown remarkable endurance and flexibility for a woman her age, but Louis, as he seems to have a penchant for doing, is pushing her too hard, and I keep thinking she’s going to break a hip!
While without question, I believe that Kristi is far and away the best dancer of the bunch, I’m totally in love with Jason’s posture and arm and leg extensions. For all I know, he may get every step wrong, but he looks damned near balletic while he’s doing it! And after three years of hearing Len scold the men about posture and rise-and-fall , I finally see what he’s actually talking about.
Marissa kicked butt and Priscilla couldn’t get into character. Shannon was awful. Kristi did great. Didn’t see Jason. Christian was meh. Poor Marlee couldn’t hear the tempo changes and just looked like a fish out of water.
I don’t know why, but for some reason I just can’t get into the show this season. I haven’t yet picked up the phone, though I’m kind of rooting for Marissa.
I hate that Bruno gave Marlee an “8.” Don’t give her pity points, dude. It’s demeaning.
Same with Heather Mills last season…there’s a fine line between being impressed, and being patronizing. The judges are wobbling on that line every week.
I think it’s amazing that Marlee is able to dance as well as she has been, however I think we should also remember that she has learned to compensate for her deafness for her entire life and being an actress she has probably come up with coping methods to learn cues that don’t rely on hearing. So while it is amazing that she can do this, and she does deserve all the props she gets for it, I certainly don’t think she deserves higher scores just because of her handicap. I think your average out-of-shape couch potato with no rhythm, like myself, would have to overcome a lot problems, somewhat similar in difficulty, in learning these dances.
I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who feels that way. When the gentleman and I heard the judges’ comments on Marlee’s performance, we thought they’d be giving 6s, not 7s. Then again, I’m having the same problem PunditLisa has in getting into this season, and I’m not sure why.
I feel sorry for Derek Hough – first a neck injury, and now food poisoning! On the other hand, I had to think for a moment before I remembered who he’s partnered with.
I think it will come down to Jason and Kristi at the end (no bets on the third finisher), but my money’s on Kristi to win, but not much of it.
Poor Shannon Elizabeth couldn’t shake her butt if her life depended on it. I know she doesn’t have much in the hip department, but she can’t make use of what she does have.
I thought the high scores for Marlee were out of line, too. And I don’t really think that’s what she wants.
Priscilla looked clumsy, especially her hands, all through her dance. They seemed to fumble for holds.
Mario and Christian were okay, but didn’t sell it, as far as I’m concerned.
Jason (to me) looked like he was doing the “pose and let your partner do all the work” thing.
Marissa sold it and was enjoying herself, but I thought parts looked clumsy.
Can Marlee not wear some kind of a metronome device? I have no idea if they exist but I was thinking of some sort of watch-like device that could tap a vibration she could keep a beat with.
As much as I enjoy Edyta’s stuff when she’s on, that’s her normal default if she can’t get the amateur to do the routine or the dance is beyond them (see Ratzenberger, John)
I like Latin music & dance in general, but the rumba seems to be a lot of walking & posing.
And: I have developed an uncanny ability to predict the judges’ scores, after their comments (ie, I can translate their comments into numbers). They speak…Tom Bergeron shoos them away…and I say “8…7…8” and lo, it comes to pass. Pretty cool, huh?
Getting it perfectly in sync with live music strikes me as near impossible, although it sounds like a good idea otherwise, and might very well be made to work with recorded music, or if it were linked to a metronome that the conductor of the music used to give him his beat as well. I’m sure some Bright Young Thing could design such, but I doubt there’s all that much market for it, so we’d probably be talking something cobbled together just for this.
It’s possible that Maitlin may get some of the beat without hearing. I live on a busy street, and when a car goes by with really loud music (usually rap, sigh), I don’t just hear it, I feel it. What she can’t get from feel is the flavor of the music. None the less, on the whole I’ve been very impressed by her dancing in general. She’s graceful, athletic, a fine actress, and working very hard.
The judges are strange sometimes, even though I, like jsc1953, have developed a usually accurate ability to translate their comments into scores. But when they commented on Marissa, they were all saying it was her best dance yet (with which I agreed - it was energetic, fun, and intricate without the usual frenetically bouncy teenaged girl persona I’d come to know and despise - she’s heavy, but she must be in pretty darned good shape!), but gave her no higher scores than last week. BTW, Tony is either a superb actor, or he’s exceptionally fond of her in a big brother sort of way - he’s VERY protective of her. It’s rather sweet.
She never quite committed to any of the movements. And it seemed half done or a rehearsal walkthrough.
I can’t get into Mario - it’s “meh.” I think part of that is Karina - I still don’t like her choreography, it’s still too much about her. I keep wanting Christian to do better, and he’s gotten to “competent.” But I wanted a much hotter rumba.
It’s not just you. See Post #102, paragraph 2 and subsequent posts. I’m wondering if they need to take a break for a year or two so that it stays fresh. Or maybe they need to expand from ballroom to other styles, such as hip hop. Personally, I’d pay large American dollars to see Jerry Springer try to spin on his back.
I had read that this morning – but at the time I posted was thinking more about the fact that there’s been relatively little chatter about the show, compared to previous seasons.
I suspect this would lose audience in equal numbers; it would certainly lose me. If you want it, you can see hip-hop any- and everywhere, and I think the show would lose a lot of the wholesome innocence that I was commenting on a page or two ago if they started adding such non-traditional dancing.
It’s funny; I had *my * “can’t get into it this season” for the two past seasons, and just got my full enjoyment back this season. So it may be individual. Or maybe I’m just weird.
She’s a professional tennis player–she has spent the large majority of her days since early teens outside in direct sunlight. I’m actually surprised that she looks relatively unleathery for all of the sun abuse her skin has suffered.
