While some people here might have treated him somewhat unkind, I do think that is the exception rather than the rule of SDMB posters.

I know that I personally have not “slammed” him.

I found out through a very amused Lauralee not long ago that the poster is actually *billy the witness from LBMB - Yes, the person I called an “idiot” just above.

I did not know the connection at all. However, I did see a situation close to what Lauralee mentioned above - a newbie Christian posting here.

And I did not slam him, and again, let me state that most people here did not slam him.

I will stand by my “idiot” comment because he was (and still might be) an idiot over there with some of the things he said.

I figure either he is on good behavior here because of the nature of the board, or he might have learned something from lurking here and maybe from comments by the likes of Soul Frost, Falcon, myself and others who posted over there.

Either way, until he says something worthy of my ire, him being a Christian - even one who drove me fucking NUTS over at LBMB - will not make me slam him.

In fact, I welcome him here!

However, should he say something… Well, idiotic… I’ll react appropriately.

All this time that I’ve been disliking the term “witch” and distancing myself from it, and not referring to myself by it, and asking others not to refer to me by it… I’ve really been insisting on calling myself it? Who knew?? I’m so glad we have Daniel here to tell us what we think and do! It’s also convenient that all wiccans and neopagans are absolutely identical. Makes it that much easier, after all.

Just look at some of the replies to FriendOfGod in this thread – I think that is all the evidence he needs. FoG seems pretty darn sincere and he just gets mocked.

Just a little bit more of “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all” principle wouldn’t hurt in GD.

OK. It is my impression that this board does not treat Fundamentalist Christians the same as other posters, irrespective of their debating techniques. I must qualify that I did not pay a whole lot of attention to the threads in which the great battles spoken of took place. But I did look in a little, and received the opposite impression from that given here. I saw reasoned arguments put forth by FoG met with ridicule and snide contempt, instead of logical refutation.

I would suggest to the posters here that there is a very low percentage of discussions of every sort in which the debaters do not each feel that the other is being irrational and not adhering to proper debating form. The fact that there is such a general opinion concerning Fundamentalists may be more a result of consensus about their conclusions, more than a genuine difference in their methods.

FTR, I do not think that I, as an Orthodox Jew, have been badly treated by this board. (Satan, you misunderstood Daniel’s remark about this). Nor do I think my fellows have been so. But Fundamentalist Christianity is a far more powerful force in this country than orthodox Judaism. Thus people are much more threatened by it, and hostile to it.

If I’m next to a guy on the sidewalk who, looking up, points out to me that a grand piano is falling off the skyscraper above us, and advises that I should get out of the way lest the piano crush me, I think I have a certain moral obligation, even if I don’t think the piano exists, to point out to the gentleman that he, too, should consider moving out of the way of the piano.

Now, we can debate that depending on which way the wind is blowing whether one or either one of us is really in any peril. But I don’t think you will ever convince me that I should “be nice” and not point out what I honestly percieve to be flaws in the man’s position, even if he finds it very insulting and judgemental for me to think that, if there is a piano, he’s not somehow immune to the gravity of the situation.

Outside of that, I have said my fair share of dumb and unfeeling things and I am trying to improve my ways, honest. (IIRC, as Kirk once said to Scotty, “Good thing you’re an engineer – with tact like that you’d never make it as a ship’s counselor.”)

Well, jmullaney: your assertion that there is a piano about to fall is suspect–salvation is not near so clear-cut to all as pianos falling. A better analogy of your beliefs would be “I believe that if a person owns possessions a piano will fall on them at some distant point, although I have no proof of this besides my personal interpretation of the second-hand 2000 year old words of a intinerant preacher. So I will constantly rail against those who ridiculously think they are safe against falling pianos yet have possessions.” Quite frankly, the only differnce I see between you and FriendofGod is that your interpretations differ and he seems quite a bit nicer; you’re at least as dogmatic, close-minded and insulting in debate as he. You’re both beating us about the head with the One True Way you, personally, have access to, wailing about imaginary pianos as an excuse to question the honesty, intelligence and faith of people who believe differently. A healthy dollop of humility and respect would serve you well, Mr. I’m-an-atheist-but-I-still-know-who-is-Saved-and-who-is-not-and-will-proclaim-My-judgment-on-them-at-any-opportunity, my-interpretation-of-scripture-is-the-only-right-one-and-I-won’t-listen-to-any-others-la-la-la-la, crappy-close-minded-argument-makin’, it’s-truly-moral-to-do-no-work-and-let-those-who-DO-work-feed-me, Pepperoni-roll-conjurin’, once-called-Jesus-claimin’, believin’-in-God-but-still-naming-himself-an-atheist, arrogant, self-righteous, whiny “lost sheep” of “The Only True Christians”.
