Danny Glover's Humble Opinion

Picturing Bin Laden bent over a bottom bunk with a line behind him…

Perhaps life in prison is better.

Somehow I have a feeling that’s not what Danny had in mind.

And I should give a rat’s ass about his opinion because…?

I’ve never understood why these people seem to think that their often-debatable talent for playing pretend in front of cameras makes them qualified to comment on world events. Just a pet peeve of mine.

I wasn’t suggesting you should. I, for one, do not look to Hollywood on matters of public policy. Steisand, Farrell, Sheen make me want to puke. Add Glover to the list.

I didn’t mean to imply that you were taking his side. It was more of a rhetorical question.

Might as well just put a bullet in his head. It’d be less-cruel. Picture this…

It’s late at night in Cell Block A. Prisoner bin Laden is trying to sleep in his tiny little bunk (that feels like a feather bed compared to his accomodations in Afghanistan). Suddenly, his cell door slides open… he jumps out of bed to see several dozen of his fellow prisoners standing out in the hall.

“What are you doing here?” bin Laden asks.

One of the prisoners - a large, bald man with arms the size of tree trunks - steps forward. “So,” he says, “I hear you’re the guy that blew up the fuckin’ World Trade Center.” He reaches into his pocket and slides some brass knuckles onto his fist.

Prisoner bin Laden gulps as the group steps forward. On the upper catwalks overlooking the cell, the warden grins as screams of pain erupt throughout the prison. It would take over an hour to hose the blood and entrails out of the tiny cell…

Actually, I heard it justified pretty well by Geri Halliwell. She basically said that people are going to look to actors and singer as role models, and yes it’s stupid, but its a good chance to push things that you think are right to people that are going to listen to you. Even though they’re listening for the wrong reasons.

As George Carlin says, think of how stupid the average person is. And then think that half the people on the planet are stupider than that!

New Jersey 101.5 had this as a topic yesterday, a caller agreed we should not kill Bin Laden, instead capture him, give him a sex change operation then return him (now her) to the Taliban

I’m not sure I agree with the death penalty, either, but for different reasons.

Frankly, no matter how comfortable it might be to believe it, Osama isn’t just an isolated wacko. As soon as he’s gone, others will step in to take his place. The last thing I want to do is give them a martyr to their cause.

I know if we keep him alive & imprisoned, we run the risk of him continuing to coordinate terrorist activities from a jail cell. However, I really think he’s much more dangerous dead than alive. I would rather see him rot in prison and simply fade from power than become the terrorist’s Joan of Arc.

Hmmmmm…Initials R.W.R. ring a bell? Prior to government service, say as SAG president and/or McCarthy informant?

Makes note … actors cannot have opinions. Okay! Got it!

He makes you sick because he doesn’t believe in the death penalty? Wow.

Obviously Pit material.

Buh-Bye.

Well, according to the OP, he was participating (I presume, as an invited discussant) in an Amnesty International anti-death penalty forum at Princeton, which is where he made the quoted remarks. I think your ire might be better directed, not at actors for daring to have opinions on world events and to voice them in public when asked, but at the news media’s eagerness to publish stories about any and every event in the lives of entertainment celebrities and call it “news”.

I serious doubt it will come to that. Osama has said that he would not be taken alive. And I have heard that his body guards are ordered to shoot him if the enemy closes in.

This means bin Laden has the following priorities (ranked in order of preference, most to least):
[li]Head terrorist group against “Western Ideals”[/li][li]Run from the actions of (1) when the troops that support “Western Ideals” come knocking[/li][li]Die[/li][li]Go to prison for (1)[/li][li]Live life as a wealthy, educated man
[/li]And people follow this guy??? All I can say is:
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA — Whatever

Hmm? I’m allowed to have an opinion on world events, and I’m an idiot. I don’t see why actors should be excuded from it. The media covers their opinions not because they think famous opinions are more valid, but because the media covers EVERYTHING about famous people. That’s why they’re famous.

The only thing that annoys me is “Politically Incorrect” with Bill Maher, does seem to take the position that famous opinions are more valid.

As for what Glover actually said, I don’t think his views are any more radical than an average lefty here, from what was quoted.

And yeah, if you believe the death penalty is wrong, it makes sense that it’s always wrong, even if you really really hate the guy.

Agree. It’s a matter of moral consistency. If it’s wrong for the government to kill Joe Rapist it’s also wrong to kill Osama.

Of course, I personally argue that Bin Laden’s continued existence (even sequestered in prison) may be a threat to world peace and security. The same can’t be said for even Tim McVeigh and Charles Manson.

The the whole “martyrdom” angle further complicates matters…

Any way he can make iot look like he offed himself committing auto-eotic asphixiation? That’ll put the kibosh on that legacy…

I gotta assume a common humanity. Like if I was suddenly rich, I would moe genrerous. If poeple think my opinion is important, for no good reason, …
