Dante's Action Hero Mafia

To answer your question, Sangfroid, requires some general bookkeeping. Day 1 is usually about game mechanics, so I’ll get my thoughts out of the way now.

First, we most likely have three scum. Last game was an open game, so I didn’t see this mentioned, but for our new players: you can find out the likely number of scum in a closed game by taking the number of players and taking a square root of that number. Alternatively, you can just divide by four. Either way, this game points to 3 scum.

Now, the part that answers your question: this will be an extremely quick game due to the number of players. Here’s the worst-case scenario:

D1: we mislynch, bringing the likely total down to 6 town, 3 scum.
N1: scum kill, now we’re at 5 town, 3 scum.
D2: mislynch, 4 town, 3 scum
N2: scum kill, 3 town, 3 scum
D3: lynch-or-lose, depending on how ties are broken. If no majority is reached (how could it?), scum wins on the following night kill.

Powers could manipulate these numbers, but we don’t have a good way of gauging their impact on Day 1. Depending on how that third day shakes out, we could have only two mislynches between us and losing the game.

So, tips on how to play? Lynch the bad guys, of course.

Let’s get things started and get a vote on the board, though. I vote Prof. Pepperwinkle. I’m reading a lot of effort in looking like he’s engaged, but his posts don’t yet actually look engaged. It’s a fine line for me; his posts, on the whole, read fine. He just seems very ‘present’ for someone who is posting about where the other posters are and reposting the rules. Call it a very thin gut feel.

Suburban Plankton hasn’t checked in yet. Can we start voting already?

According to Dante’s OP, no.

Well, uh, okay.

Unvote Prof. P

Wait, where in the OP does it say we can’t vote? It reads “Day 1 has started” and “play on” to me.

Post 11 from Dante G

and [snip]

It’s day one. I’m doing what I can. Besides, I haunt the Thread Room, so I am perhaps more likely to pop in and drop a one-liner than usual. It’s just my style.

Gotcha. Not actually in the OP, I missed that post in mobile. Still, we’re waiting for the guy who said he’s on vacation? Why did we start the day then?

And Prof P, remember: no hard feelings! I’m interested in getting the game going, which means casting votes and seeing where they take us. I’m gonna get votes, you’re going to get votes, we’re all going to get votes. Nothing I say should ever be taken personally, and besides… I think I proved pretty successfully in the previous Mafia discussion thread that I’m not always sure how to read you. Hopefully I can get a better read on you and your play style as this game progresses.

Oh, no hard feelings at all. If there was one thing I learned in the last game it’s that ANYBODY can seem like Scum at any given time. The other thing is to pay closer attention to lurkers than to people actively participating.

MOD NOTE

Considering the Day 1 Phase will last until Friday, I will go ahead and let voting start. True Suburban Plankton has not checked in, but he did say he would check on the game throughout the week using his phone, so therefore … Game on!!

So, it’s too early to pick a lurker (unless it’s Plankton). So, speaking of styles. I’m familiar with Plum and sangfroid’s writing styles, but Plum hasn’t said much yet. sangfroid sounds like he did in the last game, where he was Town. Mahaloth died before I could get a read on his style. Sario’s style in the last game was to lurk, so I won’t have a read on him this game (unless he lurks). Everybody else is new to me.

BTW, I’ve been reading over at MafiaScum.com for information on how to play the game. Anybody have any ideas on how good that site is?

I was introduced to mafia by the website Comixtreme, which later changed into CxPulp. The main link they always went to for mafia rules and ideas was wiki.mafiascum.net

It’s a good source of info.

Hey there folks, I’m alive…

I have my PM, and I want to say thank you to everyone for not being too talkative so fast, since I’m doing all of this on my phone.

I’m on vacation until Friday evening, so through the entirety of Day 1; I’ll try to check on things two or three times a day.

“Welcome to the party, pal!”

Judging by what I’ve seen both here and at Giraffe board, Mahaloth’s style is to get lynched early and often.

As for me, I plan on being a lot more active this time around.

I’m sorry, that was mean, but I’ll be damned if it wasn’t funny as hell.

Non Game-related question:

I’ve only seen the original Die Hard movie, but none of the sequels. Is this game set in an alternate universe where the last several scenes of that movie never took place? Or did they retcon away a few deaths?

Yes indeed, I did retcon the ending of the original film to suit the story of this game. As for the other heroes that will appear as the game progresses, I’m basing the game in the*** Die Hard*** universe, but other action heroes from other films will exist as themselves in the universe as well. * For example, the trucker in the opening narrative - take a guess as to whom that is.
*

So basically all players are either a action hero or villain that we have all seen or at least heard of.

Hey, all.

Checking in. Just trying to get my bearings after that loooong other game.
Class night tonight, so I’ll check in again with a little more substance later this evening.
This has a “Fast and Furious” feel to it…

sorry…wrong game…

Vote Suburban Plankton

Call it a weak hunch, I guess. I don’t see any legal votes yet, so we might as well start the discussion here.
