Daredevil Season 2 - open spoilers

Stairway/hallway fight in episode 3 was amazing. Absolutely amazing. What a great show.

Yes! I noted it upthread, too. Even better than the big fight scene he had the first season. Just GoPro relentless while also being well-framed and followable, even while it kept coming and was relentless. (ETA: did I mention it was relentless? 'Cuz it was relentless!)

Cool that this format - multi-ep released at once for long-form storytelling - can devote such a big portion of the episode to that scene. It enriches the story so freakin’ much - his character, the gritty street-ness of the setting, the physicality of the fights.

So I’ve just watched the first episode, and one thing stood out to me—is there some sort of trend to nerf down gunfire action in recent shows? I’m not sure what the other show was where I noticed this (Agents of Shield? Walking Dead? Both?), but somehow, it seems as if people just hold their guns, and afterwards, muzzle effects and sounds are added.

The scene in which the Irish mob is gunned down seemed, especially in light of the brilliant fistfight action scenes of last season, downright hokey, in my opinion. Like somebody outside going ‘rat-tat-tat-tat’ and red splotches appearing on people. It completely lacked kinetic impact.

Am I off my rocker, or has anybody else had a similar feeling?

I thought that this was going to seem pretty weak after the epic consequences of the first season, and after the higher dramatic stakes in Jessica Jones. Nope. It’s hooked me.

I do have some nitpicks.

  1. I thought the pawn dealer trying to hawk child porn read too much like the writers wedging in a reason for The Punisher to kill the guy.
  2. The Punisher lectures Daredevil about their methods. Sure, they get back out of jail all too soon. In reality, isn’t this revolving door for ordinary violent criminals a right-wing fantasy from the 80’s? Furthermore, if they’re back on the street in a week does that count if they’re still shambling around recovering from major-league ass-whippings? I mean, I assume Murdock has some kind of super-hero endurance that factors into healing, but punks?
  3. Why doesn’t His Punisherness bring up the practical point that sooner or later, Daredevil’s kung fu is going to kill somebody? If you do what Daredevil does, offer free delivery high-quality ass-whippings, you’re actually quite likely to commit manslaughter on a regular basis.
  4. Was the chain CGI in the stairwell? I’m not necessarily that perceptive, but the scene made it unlikely that they could have counted on accurately flinging it, and they didn’t use camera cutaways or whip shots to make it happen.

I haven’t come across Elektra, but I mostly know her from the Elektra: Assassin trade paperback. I was quite taken with the character there. So, I look forward to how they deal with her. Jennifer Garner’s Elektra didn’t really hold up in comparison.

I loved the scene but this stood out for me. The chain was CGI’d and it was pretty obvious.

Does he fight any supervillains yet?

Has he been contacted by Agents of SHIELD?

Has there been any references to other super heroes?

If no, I cannot see why not since he seems to live in the same city as the Avengers.

Okay, what happened in episode for where Karen refers to Matt as ‘Red’? The subtitle says “Matt” but it sounds really like she’s saying “rend” but “Red” makes more sense, except that she wouldn’t be saying it. This is at the 3:30 before the end of the episode.

I took it as an easy hook for the writers, but not primarily because they wanted him to kill the pawn dealer but because they wanted to make it clear to the audience that The Punisher is only killing really bad guys (or, at least, the guys he thinks are really bad). And also that maybe he’s touchy on the subject of kids.

What I want to know is if he was out for retribution against the Irish mob why did he start with the other gangs?

Thought it might be that he didn’t know which gang was involved but I don’t remember anything being shown for what lead him to the Irish after the previous slaughters.

I would love to see even more integration between the various Marvel projects, but I can understand why it would be difficult to have constant cameos and crossovers between different shows. One thing that keeps them separate is that the Netflix shows like DD are about “street-level” heroes as opposed to the godly, world-shaking heroes of the movies. Surely they could work in some more references, though.

In the first season of DD, I recall (perhaps not all that well) that they said some things about the destruction on New York which we saw in the first Avengers movie. IIRC it was said that some of Fisk’s wealth comes from contracts to rebuild after that devastation.

And speaking of Fisk, Kingpin is a supervillain from the comics, although he has no obvious superpowers in DD. Madame Gau and the Hand, however, do have some powers that they sometimes call upon or at least refer to.

I didn’t catch any references to the other heroes in this season. In Jessica Jones, IIRC there was some discussion of the devastation of New York and JJ mentions “the green guy” and I also kinda remember her mentioning “the boy scout”.

Late episode Daredevil spoiler: Foggy has a job interview with the law partner Jessica Jones often gets her P.I. gigs from.

Spoiler from future projects: Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist are all going to be together in a Defenders series (or movie?), so there should be more and more upcoming crossovers at least amongst the Netflix shows in the future.

Never mind to my question above. Started the next episode and it answered it.

No, but there’s a cameo at the end you’ll enjoy it you did.

First of all, that stairway fight in episode 3 was fucking fantastic.

I would love to see a crossover between this Daredevil and the Christian Bale Batman. That would make for an entertaining movie.

Oh! And I don’t think they could have cast anyone better suited for Frank Castle that Jon Bernthal.

I came looking for this thread just to give props to that hallway/stairwell fight sequence in ep3. Freaking fantastic. Looked to me like steadycam (and single shot?) with choreography going 360 around the camera all the way down. Definitely CGI thrown in, but I thought it looked amazing. Also, thought it looked a lot like a video game, not sure if that’s a compliment or not.

Must agree. I have a few episodes left, but am trying to figure out if they will reveal the purpose of that deep pit.

I have not read a bunch of DD, and only know the biggest plots and character relationships from an arm’s length.

With that in mind, and alerting folks to possible spoilers:

Is all of the stuff in the show “canon”?

  • What is Stick’s relationship to The Hand? I knew Stick was MM’s mentor, but did we (and MM) know that Stick was involved with secret societies?

  • Is Elektra’s relationship with MM canon? E.g., meeting at college and recognizing each other’s abilities, reengaging a decade later, and it turning out that it was not a random meeting at college?

  • Do Elektra and Stick know each other?

I am fine with how things are portrayed on the show. I just hadn’t known any of those twists with my limited knowledge so was curious what, if any, was new.

Thanks!

I’m not a big comic book fan, but on a friend’s advice I’ve binge watched Jessica Jones, Agents of SHIELD, and Daredevil.

I just watched season two of Daredevil and was surprised nobody here mentioned the unique narration. I kind of enjoyed it and thought it suited the series.

Turns out I inadvertently had Descriptive Video Services turned on. Anyone else watch with it on? I never realized it was a thing, and so I thought the series just had an odd narration style.

I did not realize it was “Shane from Walking Dead” immediately. He is not who I would have picked, but I agree that he has nailed the role. I really liked the worn-out, ugly look of Punisher: War Zone, but I agree that the role is a lot better written and directed in this show.

That is hilarious. Now, I must try it.

I kinda gave up on the first season and only half watched the last 3 or so episodes. The clunky dialogue, often silly looking fights and general malaise of the show kept me out of it. But man this 2nd season is fantastic so far (5 eps in). So much better than the first season in just about every way. Jon Beranthal is amazing. I want just a punisher series now with him starring. Please someone tell me this is in the works!

Oddly enough, they have been non-committal about a Punisher series. It is not in the works at this time.

It’d be a shame if it doesn’t happen.

I’m two episodes in and it’s been good so far. The one thing that I’m nitpicky about though is the Punisher’s assault on the hospital. They spend the episode setting up his “military tactics” and “precision attacks” and he stomps through firing a scattergun wildly around a bunch of innocent hospital workers and patients. This would have been a nice scene to use a scoped carbine or a shorter rifle, using single fire.

Yep, nitpicky.
