Daria Fans, The wait is over!

Finally Daria on DVD, sadly not with the original music but better than nothing.

I was just about to post this as I just found. I can’t believe this sank with no replies.

BE MORE EXCITED PEOPLE!

But $70, damn that’s pricey.

But it’s not the original music. :frowning:

Most of it is covers that will probably sound a lot like the original, but some are just generic replacements that only sort of sound like the song used.

Christ, MTV has enough fucking money to get the rights. Just charge like, $10 more for the whole set and bing bang boom, problem solved.

But I have to ask…how is a cover cheaper than the original? I mean…doesn’t the band making the cover song have to pay rights to the record label that owns the original;? And then wouldn’t they need to charge enough to MTV to cover their cost of the rights?

It’s good enough to get, minus the music, but damn that’s annoying. Now for the movie starring Tina Fey as a grown up Dara looking back (and, uh, Aubrey Plaza as her young self?)

MTV used to paste whatever shitty music was popular at the time all over their TV shows, i doubt they have enough money to pay for the rights and still make it worthwhile to put out the DVDs.

Licensing rights get really expensive because they’re a big part of the music industry’s income now and bands really want to milk it.

Soundalike covers are cheaper because, as I understand it, it allows some people who would normally get royalties from using the actual original recordings to get cut out of the deal.

OMG!!!

I am now very excited.

Hooray Daria!

I loved that show. I soooo felt like her growing up.

the song list is actually quite substantial.

Yeah, the music was very important to setting, tone and theme of each episode. I will never understand the logic of this music licensing business. People who would buy Daria and hear those songs that they probably haven’t thought of in years would most likely in a spirit of nostalgia purchase many of them to listen in full. I think the artists would gain by new sales driven by the purchase of the show.

That’s because the music industry is full of morons. Especially if they cut MTV a deal that included a provision to list all of the songs featured in the show at the end of each episode (like The WB used to do and perhaps still does).

But on the other hand, I think a lot of Daria fans really overestimate the importance of the specific music used. A lot of it was great music, yes. But a lot of it was also just whatever was popular at the time and really didn’t mean anything. And because it was a cartoon, the music was never referenced on screen.

Now I’ll wait patiently for someone to point to the 2 or 3 episodes where the music is mentioned by the characters.

nah JB, i agree. the music was shoehorned into the show as pseudo-promotion and a half-hearted attempt at keeping music the focus for MTV. It wasn’t especially poignant, meaningful, etc.

i also liked clone high. shame that show didn’t get renewed and tom green did.
