My best fiend told me several months ago about a drink called the Dark & Stormy.
4 ice cubes
2 thin wedges lime
1 thin wedge orange
2 slices of fresh ginger
45ml The Kraken black spiced rum
Bundaberg ginger beer to fill
Not being a ‘drinker’ it took me a while to try it. I picked up a bottle of Kraken rum a little bit ago. I don’t have any oranges, lime, ginger, or Bundaberg ginger beer (I didn’t look up the recipe beforehand) but it tastes pretty good with a shot of rum, four ice cubes, and Canada Dry.
Oddly, my husband just made this yesterday. After having ginger beer around the house for months, I was surprised we finally had a use for it. He seemed to like it. I’m not a big ginger fan, so I let him have all the fun.
My God, that sounds good! :o I have a bottle of Lamb’s dark Navy rum just waiting to be drunk—not spiced, but I’ll wager that’s not really necessary with this palette of flavors.
You know, don’t you, that ginger beer is very different from ginger ale? The stuff that comes from the Caribbean can really knock your socks off!
Not sure if this is a whoosh, but it already has swept the nation. Dark and Stormys have been on the cocktail circuit for years. I believe they originated in the Caribbean so you guys on the west coast may be the last to hear about them.
I’ve always seen them plain though: ginger beer and rum. No fruit or ginger.
Yeah. I like the variation with real fruit and ginger, but a dark and stormy was one of the first rum drinks I ever had that I liked (rum doesn’t taste good in coke. We need to collectively come together on this as a people). Kraken is good stuff, I usually go for Sailor Jerry’s when mixing with ginger ale/beer.
Bundaberg Rum (not related to the ginger beer folks, but based in the same large town, hence the name) make a pre-mixed version of this drink which is reasonably popular.
An acquaintance of mine makes spirited ice cream, including a Dark & Stormy. I like that better than the drink (rum in a drink tends to leave me with an unpleasant aftertaste).
I can second the recommendation for Bundaberg ginger beer. It’s good stuff.
The trademark for Dark & Stormy is held by Gosling of Gosling dark rum and Gosling ginger beer fame. It’s been around for a while.
My distillery has a dark and stormy cocktail made with our dark rum, ginger juice, lime juice and a little bit of simple syrup and served with a lime wedge. It’s damn refreshing.
Hey Johnny, welcome to the (Dark-n-Stormy) club. Glad you’ve been introduced. Out here in the trailer park, we don’t muss it up with all that fancy stuff, though those do sound like some thoughtful and yummy additions. We just mix some Goslings with our favorite ginger beer (Goya for me; love the spiciness). When we’ve got city-folk visitin’ we’ll add a splash of sophistication with some Domaine de Canton.
Lately I’ve been enjoying ones made with Myers’s dark rum and Blenheim extra spicy ginger ale (with the pink cap). Despite the “ale” in the name, I doubt anything labeled “ginger beer” has appreciably more kick than that stuff.
I ordered a Dark & Stormy at a Maggiano’s restaurant a while back as it was on special and didn’t like it at all…not sure if it was the ginger beer, the spiced rum (they use Gosling’s Black Seal Rum and Fever Tree Ginger Beer) or the combo of the two, but it was off-putting.
I recently threw together a (clear) rum and ginger ale at home on a whim, just like the OP did, and it was delicious.
I really do enjoy a good Dark & Stormy, but for the love of all that is holy, and risking booze-snobbery, you may want to try other spiced rums. I developed an intense dislike for Kraken on the first taste.
My preferences are for Gosling’s Black Seal or Greenbar’s Crusoe Spiced Rum. It will likely make for a much tastier drink, although everyone’s tastes do vary.
