Anyone playing Darksiders? I was wondering if it was as fun as the screenshots looked. Is it a “twitchy” game or more casual? I am planning on getting it for PC but I hear it is pretty much a direct port over so console opinions are welcome.
I played the 90 minute demo and it basically seemed like a God of War clone with a lot of zelda elements mixed into it. The demo might be available on PC, I dunno.
Basically you can upgrade all your stuff, and you get items and such akin to Zelda. There seems to be a lot of trudging back and forth across the dungeons to hit switches and that sort of thing. The combat was basic GOW stuff (I suppose I should say Devil May Cry stuff as that launched the genre, but GOW-like is the accepted term I guess) but it was fun and precise. There are lots of combos and new moves and such to unlock. All in all I didn’t deem it worth a purchase after the demo, but ymmv. My buddy absolutely loves it
Darksider is the best 360 game that nobody bought.
It’s a lot of fun. Yes, it liberally and unabashedly steals elements from other games, but at least those elements are implemented with thought and care, not just slapped on. The voice acting and plot is good, campy fun (War, one of the four Horsemen, gets called into the Apocalypse prematurely and spends the game hunting down the perpetrator) but the focus is definitely on the gameplay.
Gameplay is a mix of God of War’s hack 'n slash and various puzzle and platforming elements. It’s well done. Buy it. (Though I haven’t tried it on the PC)
That’s pretty impressive considering that THQ announced a sequel a month after the release of the first game due to high sales and good critical reception. Man, just imagine how many sales it would have gotten if somebody had bought it.
I’m in with PopeJewish. Played the demo, found the combat too simplistic and the puzzling elements too hit or miss. It seemed like it couldn’t really decide what it wanted to be and therefore ended up doing neither area well. I bought Bayonetta instead and never looked back.
I liked it. The combat is pretty simple, but I didn’t get bored with it. It’s actually a Zelda clone and competently made at that. Any Zelda fan will instantly feel comfortable with it. Liked the art style, bright and colourful, reminded me of Torchlight. The story was nothing special but it served it’s part OK. Mark Hamill was good as your, Navi like, guide but he was basically just doing his Joker voice. Some of the characters motivations where a bit off. Why are Angels always such morons in these kind of stories?
Played it on the PC and even though my specs where higher than the recommended, I still suffered from slowdowns. I noticed a bit of an performance improvement when I played it in offline mode for some reason. The game uses Steamworks. If you’re European I’d recommend you check out prices at other online retailers. I got it for a significant discount from D2D than if I’d have bought it through Steam.
I think the review over at The Escapist sums the game up pretty well. If you liked any of the 3D Zeldas, you’ll like this. Otherwise skip it. If you’re a God of War fan you’ll be disappointed.
I give it a 8 out of 10. Took me about 20 hours to finish it.
